• Explain: "One person will open his envelope and read aloud the gift he received. If you would like that gift, raise your hand. DefinitionTithe—one tenth; to tithe is to give a tenth of one's money to God

• Ask: "Have you ever heard the statement, 'It is better to give than to receive'? What does the statement mean? Do you agree with it? Why?"

• Say: "God wants us to tithe and give offerings to Him. Giving offerings to God is an act of worship. Look at the 'What Do You See?' activity on your Worship Guides. This is what it may look like at some churches when people give their offerings."

• Describe how your church receives offerings.• Explain: "Coins play a very important part in our

Bible story. Listen and discover how."

8tTell the Bible Story (6 minutes)

Pull It TogetherScissors, box or chest, sticky notes, markers, Bible times costume• Print "Joash" Teaching Picture (CD). Display. • Print and cut apart "Word Coins" (CD) (1 coin per

child). • Write the following words on sticky notes

(1 word per note): Joash, temple, money, Jehoiada, burnt offerings, carpenters, repair, people, chest, and taxes.

• Cover the teaching picture with the prepared notes.

• Enlist an adult to role-play the story.

• Distribute coins.• Call attention to the teaching picture.• Say: "These words are the same as the words

on your coins. When our guest says one of these words, I will remove the sticky note. If you have the word on your coin, bring it and place it in the chest."

• Invite the guest to tell the Bible story while pausing to remove the boldfaced words from the teaching picture. Allow the children to place their coins in the chest.

• [Guest enters.]• Guest: "Thank you for allowing me to tell you

about a very important time in my life. I was only a child when these events took place, but I remember it like it was yesterday."

Joash and the People Gave Offerings

Based on 2 Chronicles 24:1-14

At the age of seven, Joash (JOH ash) became our king. He was king for 40 years, but it was what he did while he was younger that was very important. During Joash's reign as king, Jehoiada (jih HOY uh duh) served as the high priest.

After Joash grew up, he decided to repair the temple. Joash gathered the priests and Levites together. He told them to go to the cities of Judah and collect money from all the people to repair the temple. Joash told them to do this quickly; however, the Levites did not hurry.

Joash asked Jehoiada, "Why have you not required the Levites to bring the money?" Joash knew the temple was in need of repair. In fact, the temple was even being used to worship false gods.

Joash commanded that a chest be placed at the gate of the temple. Then he proclaimed that the people should bring their taxes and place them in the chest for the temple repair. When all of the leaders and the people brought their money and put it in the chest, the chest was soon full. When the king's officials saw the chest was full, they would empty it and return it to its place. They did this every day. Soon there was a lot of money. Joash and Jehoiada gave the money to the people in charge of repairing the temple. These men hired masons, carpenters, blacksmiths, and coppersmiths to repair the temple.

The men did their job of repairing the temple. When they completed the repairs, they gave the remaining money to Joash and Jehoiada. They used the money to have things made for the temple. As long as Joash was king, burnt offerings were made in the temple.

there are more ways to give than just money."• Discuss various things people can give.

15 Play "Check the Attitude" (5 minutes)• Say: "I will read aloud a statement. Tell me

whether the person has a positive attitude or negative attitude about giving. If the person has a positive attitude, raise your right hand. If the person has a negative attitude, raise your left hand."

• Read aloud the statements. Invite children to state why the attitudes are positive or negative.

25¢ since his mom is not watching.• Caroline brings 10 cans of her favorite food from

her pantry for the food drive. • Ryan picks up the bulletins after church is over

our offerings?"• Continue: "God wants us to give a tithe of what we receive. According

to the Bible, a tithe is 10 percent. If you receive 1 dollar, how much is 10 percent?"

• Say: "Let's make tithe tellers to help us know how much we should give when we receive money."

• Distribute "Tithe Tellers," scissors, markers, and brads.• Direct: "Cut out your tithe tellers. Place the smaller circle on top of the

larger one. Carefully, insert the brad through the center of both circles." • Say: "To discover how much a tithe of a certain amount is, match the color

or symbol of the dollar amount with the color or symbol of the tithe."• Call out amounts. Invite the children to tell how much the tithe is.• Say: "We can give more than 10 percent if we would like. God wants us to

worship Him by giving our offerings at church."• Talk about some of the uses of tithes in your church.• Pray.

our offerings?"• Say: "Many people think of their offering as money. We can give other

things in addition to money. We can give our time. Also, we can use the talents and abilities God gives us to serve people. Many people give of their time to teach at church. Let's make a special treat for some teachers in our church."

• Guide the children to wash their hands.• Direct the children to prepare "Parmesan Pita Treats."• Allow the children to serve the pita treats to teachers or other leaders in

the church. • Say: "God likes it when we worship Him through our offerings. Let's thank

"What's the Cost?"/"Penny, Penny, Where's the Penny?"• Review the Bible story. • Ask: "Why did Joash want the people to give offerings? How did the

people feel about giving their offerings?" • Select a volunteer to read aloud Psalm 96:8.• Ask: "What does this verse tell us to do? Why does God want us to give

our offerings?"• Continue: "Our church uses our offerings to purchase things we need, pay

our staff, support missionaries, and pay our bills. Let's see how well you know the cost of these items."

• Display "Game Items" pictures. • Say: "Can you put the items in order, from least expensive to most

expensive?" Reveal the answers based on current prices.• Transition to "Penny, Penny, Where's the Penny?"• Guide the children to form a circle.• Say: "One person stands in the middle of the circle. We will pass a penny

around the circle without allowing the center person to see. The object of the game is for the center person to guess who has the penny. When she locates the penny, the person holding it will change places with her."
