Ali Axten - Sibling worker - Little Harbour“I am very privileged as a sibling worker to be able to spend the most enjoyable times with our siblings and families. It is so essential for our children to make, create and cherish all important memories. One of the most gratifying aspects of my job is to see and capture the smiles and laughter of our children - sharing with them their first times at flying or body boarding in the sea. Every family stay brings happy memories.” On page 10 Ali gives us an insight into one of her days at Little Harbour and shares a poem she wrote.
Hannah Mair - Care Team worker - Little Bridge House “Many of the teenagers that use Little Bridge House are wheelchair users, and for them having sleep-overs at friends’ houses are impossible due to their mobility issues and difficulties with access. For them to be able to come to LBH with other young people in a similar situation and enjoy activities together allows them this normality. They can chill out with takeaways, trips out and DVD and games nights…and of course the usual teenage banter!” Page 4 talks more about a recent boys teenage weekend.

Celebrating every moment
4
Our hospices are a haven for our children and families with the care teams witnessing and sharing some amazing events that help create lasting memories. Visiting a hospice is about many different things, but one of the cornerstones of our work is to help families create memorable, fun, special days with their child, that will stay in their memories forever. Care team member Berny recounts some of his memorable moments:
“Faces, normally distorted with pain and discomfort light up when using the Multi-sensory room”.“Children who are normally wheelchair dependant or whom never normally leave their beds, floating and splashing and squealing with delight in the Jacuzzi”.“Little ones simply joining in with friends and siblings as they ‘romp around’ in the soft play area”.
Teen boys go fishingTeen weekends are organised throughout the year. The girls generally have a weekend
of pampering with face masks and manicures whilst the boys usually enjoy something less sedate! The most recent boys weekend at Little Bridge House saw 6 teenagers
enjoying a day trip to Blakewell Fisheries where they fished for and were lucky enough to catch freshwater trout! The trout was then proudly cooked on the barbecue and eaten for tea! Many of the teenagers that come on these weekends have met at the hospice and keep in touch by email and on Facebook then meet up at these dedicated weekends.

How we raised a smileThere are many ways our supporters help us in our mission to make the most of short and precious lives. In May we held our annual Raise a Smile Week that saw businesses, schools and individuals coming together to spread the word about CHSW.

A big thank-you to everyone who painted a plate and decorated their local town, school or village for our Raise a Smile Week. Children of all ages painted paper plates to show what makes them smile. In Cornwall children from 12 local schools took part - some of these creations were displayed on The Moor in Falmouth and the biggest smile was for the £1,500 raised across the county!Check our website for details of Raise a Smile week 2013!
As part of this week we introduced our mascots - did you see them out and about?
Raising funds and awareness are essential elements in funding our work. Singing or silences, swims or slims, walks or runs can all be used to raise funds in a fun way.

Little Bridge House care
6
A fond farewell to FrancesMany of our Care Team have been with us since we opened our doors in 1995 - a testament of how special Little Bridge House is to the staff as well as our families. Frances Galbraith who was part of the original care team will be fondly remembered by many of our families who described her as the ‘Scottish Comedian’. She will be sorely missed as she takes on new ventures.
Lots of our Friends Groups are celebrating 21 years of Friendship in 2012
A little something for the mums! A group of bereaved mums got to enjoy some well-deserved pampering on a recent beauty session at LBH. They recharged their batteries over a much needed tea and chat weekend with face masks and pedicures!
An extract from a letter written by a sibling.
“My name is Bethany and I have had the amazing opportunity to visit and become part of Little Bridge House. My brother Liam has special needs so my family and I visit the hospice. I have spent many occasions making a mess in messy play, running around in soft play and running and
jumping through the house and gardens. I have so many memories that will be cherished in my heart and never forgotten. I describe the people at
Little Bridge House as ‘Angels’. Every single person from the cook to the maintenance men give the siblings and
parents a break”.

3 peaks, 3 charities, one day15 year old Georgina Hopgood set herself the challenge of being the youngest person to complete the 3 peaks challenge in 24 hours. She achieved this and more, climbing 6 peaks in 3 days! Her ensuing success raised a mountainous £4,217.35 for her chosen charities! Money is still coming in but so far £1,430.13 has been raised for CHSW - well done Georgie!

A seaside gift to LBH One lucky LBH family will be getting some much needed rest and relaxation by the sea in North Devon thanks to one of our newest corporate supporters, Woolacombe Sands Holiday Park. The team there have kindly donated a week’s holiday for four at their site.
Many friends make light work and thousands of pounds They really are very special friends, to thank just a few… Rotary Club of Exmouth - Exmouth Kite Festival, Stogumber open gardens, Moose International Wheatley St Michael Lodge 283, Rotary Club of Taunton Vale - It’s Childsplay and Lions Club of Taunton Deane.
“The work CHSW do is so incredibly important; I cannot imagine the agony of getting up every day to care for a child whose life is limited. In a world where phrases like “me time” and “TLC” are banded about, the people who really need those things are in no way adequately catered for, CHSW aims to address this and the more money they get the more families they can help”.

Volunteers work tirelessly at our hospices for the benefit of our families and without them we could not continue our vital support. They help out at events, tend our gardens, work on our reception desks, and help with general day to day tasks - it’s all in a day’s work though.
Wendy’s story telling skills are regularly put to use“Stories can transport children from their worries, fears and discomfort and give them enormous pleasure and peace. Listeners of my stories range from teenagers to babies, from children who are very poorly to energetic siblings. Adults and children relax, settle down in the big lounge on comfy sofas, armchairs and beanbags and the scene is set. Care team and family members sit and cuddle their children, listening and enjoying a story together, told by someone else”.
Did you know? Parents appreciate the chance of an uninterrupted sleep - your support helps us offer them this rare commodity
One of our dads recalls a poignant time for him and his family when the care team made a bad day into a special day for his daughter Emily who was nearing the end of her life.
Dads get to have fun too Recently the newly formed ‘Stardads’ joined forces for a day of ‘green’ wood working where they made their own 3 legged stools using only manually powered tools! Then they built raised vegetable patches in the garden from donated timber and soil where they planted tomatoes, radishes and beans! Top that off with a curry and a beer in front of the footie - what better way for dads to relax and share their experiences of life at the hospice.
“One morning Emily woke up and asked if she could
have her ears pierced, the next morning a Beautician was there to do the deed!
Remarkable!”
We are grateful for the dedicated commitment from our supporters and would like to thank the National Federation of Demolition Contractors who raised a huge £20,000 at their annual dinner Yo

Little Harbour News
Here sibling worker Ali shares with us one special day at Little HarbourWe are very lucky to have been donated equipment by “Lifelites” an underwater camera and bridge camera are constantly in use, capturing the children dressing up as pirates or on visits to the beach. One captured event that will undoubtedly bring back special memories for two of our sibling girls was when they decided to make a cardboard home from a very large box. They managed to make it so girly and comfy that despite having beautiful bedrooms to sleep in they chose to spend the night in their cardboard box stocked up with midnight snacks! It was fantastic to watch the girls create such a lovely house, to me it was their space away from parents and little well siblings where they could talk just to each other and spend lots of girly time together.

We know it’s only September but with roughly 9 weeks until December, now is a great time to start thinking about Christmas! This can be especially tough for families of life-limited children. For some whose children have died it can be a particularly poignant time of year, for others the season can be overshadowed by the fear that this may be their last Christmas with their poorly child.CHSW cannot change the outcome for these families, but with your continued support we can ensure we are always there to guide, care and support them through their journey with their child and long into bereavement.

Thinking about making a Will is one of the realities of life many of us don’t want to consider. Judith Manser of Slee Blackwell Solicitors is one of our 3 partner solicitors in our Discounted Will Scheme. She tells us:
For each Will written under the scheme CHSW receives a donation of £10.
“No one enjoys considering their Will, but it really is a sensible element of your personal affairs to have in order regardless of your age or circumstance. Aside from purely financial arrangements, Wills allow
families to consider such things as appointing guardians for their children. It can be very simple and cheap to
set up a Will to protect your loved ones in the event of your death”.
Devon and Somerset Law Society (DASLS)On a recent visit to Little Bridge House, David Turner presented Eddie Farwell with a cheque for £3,394.49.This incredible amount was raised during DASLS’s charity year where they chose to support Children’s Hospice South West in a number of ways including a charity dinner for invited guests held at Sandy Park, Exeter.CHSW is very grateful for the continued commitment from DASLS as we move into an additional year of support as the Society’s chosen charity for 2013.

Please keep your other star to hang your treasured memory or message in your home this Christmas.Read overleaf to see how your Memory Star can help support a family like Kaitlyn’s.
Kaitlyn’s story
We care for families long into bereavement for as long as they need us18
KaitlynLoved ones have to say goodbye
Another angel has to f ly
Y our mum and dad and brothers too
Have all the love they can for you
A specia l girl right from the start
Has her a place in all their hearts
Y ou fought your f ight you were so strong
And proved the doubters they were wrong
Now may be time for you to sleep
But your life is a memory all will keep
Close your eyes and rest now girl
Remember how you changed the world
You’ve touched so many people’s lives
And now put tears into their eyes
Look down on all the ones that care
Y our place in their hearts will a lways be there
“Kaitlyn was born on New Years Eve 2009. We had known from early in the pregnancy that she had a condition that meant she was life-limited and were warned that she wouldn’t be expected to live for more than a few weeks.Right from the start she just fought for everything from her life and celebrated her first Christmas at home just before her 1st birthday”. In December 2011, just a few weeks before Kaitlyn’s 2nd birthday she died. Her family, Mum, Dad and three brothers Kian, Jamie and Jaden came to Little Bridge House for the days leading up to her funeral.“When we originally started using the hospice we imagined a sad place where lots of sick children come to die. The reality couldn’t be more different. The staff are just great, during our respite visits we were able to spend quality time as Mum, Dad and brothers. When Kaitlyn died, she was in the Starborn room, we visited her whenever we liked for the days leading up to the funeral. The boys came and went as they pleased to say hello to her.Kaitlyn gave a lot of hope to people, that sometimes the doctors can be proved wrong. We had nearly two years with her that we were told never to expect. It doesn’t feel real that she’s gone, and Christmas is especially difficult for us as a family, but we know that CHSW will always be on the end of the phone if I just need to talk”.
