(Contributed photo) WILLIAM RIXEY West Carteret High School senior William Grayson Rixey of Morehead City has been awarded a $61,310 Johnson Scholarship for the 2014-15 academic year at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. The full schol- arship is renewable each year. The merit-based scholarship is equal to tuition, fees, stan- dard room and board, books and personal living expenses for each of the four years at Washington and Lee. As long as Mr. Rixey maintains a 3.3 grade point average, he is guar- anteed the award each year. In addition, Mr. Rixey will have access to a sum- mer enhancement fund of up to $7,000 for a university study program that involves internships, community service projects, faculty-supervised research, international experi- ences or individually designed leadership projects. While at West Carteret High School, Mr. Rixey served as student body president and was involved in several other activities. Those include the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the National FFA, Future Business Leaders of America, varsity soccer, var- sity swim team, varsity tennis and varsity winter track. He attended Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics and has earned several awards. Awards include RBC Scholar Athlete Award in 2011 in varsity soccer, principal’s list, Good Patriot, Academic Achievement Award and National Honor Society. He’s also an Eagle Scout and has done volunteer work at Broad Street Clinic in Morehead City. He is the son of Bill and Lucy Rixey of Morehead City.
