12th AnnualChristmas Toy Drive

Dear Alumni and Friends of Cathedral High School,

We want to thank you all for your generosity and support for our annual Christmas Toy Drive. As many of you know, each year this event has exceeded everyone’s expectations thanks to the generosity of people such as you. With the help of our CHS cheerleaders, the Class of 1962 has brought joy and happiness to under-privileged families who are unable to buy gifts for their children. We accepted the challenge in helping to make a difference and were so humbled by the sincere reaction of the families (especially the children) that we promised to continue our effort on a yearly basis. With your generosity, we all can once again make it happen. Please open your hearts to reach those families that can use your help.

Thank you and God Bless

1962 Christmas Committee

FALL 2013 - CHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

W e’re already approaching the end of the year (I can’t believe it either). Three more issues created and shared with the entire Cathedral family

and once again, I must give a big thanks to all those who made it possible. As we approach another year of taking Phantoms both back in time and into the present-day CHS, I want to use this issue’s “Editor’s message” to simply thank all those who have made the first 7 issues of the CHS Alumni Newsletter possible. Without your time, photos, stories, and other donations, this newsletter would not exist.

Thank you all for another great year. Wishing you and your loved ones a fantastic holiday. William Gallegos ‘89 Editor, CHS Alumni Newsletter

EDITOR’S MESSAGEWilliam Gallegos ‘89

PRESIDENT’S CORNERHector Roman ‘76 Greetings Phantoms What a year 2013 has been and how quickly it is coming to an end. We started out the year by making you laugh at the annual Comedy Night, we then got you on the dance floor and with your classmates at perhaps our greatest “Return to Cathedral Gala” ever, and on November 10th, we will close the year off by giving a big thanks to those fellow Phantoms, along with the other brave men and women who served our country, at our Veterans’ day celebration (see ad on back page). Because of your presense at these events, we were once again to able to give back roughly 2 dozen young Phantoms at our annual Brother Gus Scholarship presentation. As always, we thank you. With 2014 approaching, what better way to start out the year by attending our monthly alumni meetings (taking place the first wednesday of each month). Meetings take place at 7pm at the Melvin Henderson-Rubio Conference room (overlooking the football field). Meetings include a 50/50 drawing (with 50% going back to the school), complimentary dinner and drinks, and the opportunity of meeting CHS graduates from the past 50+ years (including those who you may be seeing for first time since your days as a CHS student). Thanks to social media and our newsletter, attendance at our monthly meetings went up this past year. We hope the numbers go up even higher in 2014. Thank you again for another great year. We’ll see you again in 2014.

THANK YOU FOR 7 WONDERFUL ISSUES

RAY MEZA 1935-2013 Ernie Dominguez ‘53

This year we lost a great Phantom. Ray was an active student and

carried that activism through his adult life. In 1962, Ray was elected the very first president of the CHS Alumni Association. In the 2012 gala magazine, Ray was quoted, “I got involved with the Alumni Association because I always felt I never left Cathedral”. Ever after 59 years, Ray was still involved with the Alumni Assoc iat ion. He participated in the monthly meetings and even led in the meeting’s opening prayer. Ray was also part of the “Friends of Cathedral”, which was the committee responsible for saving Cathedral in 1986. Ray was also an accomplished pianist. He developed his love for music at

Cathedral and was active with his church choir and music ensemble and often held music concerts. I remember Ray always passing out his CD’s at the monthly alumni meetings.

As a Cathedral student, Ray was an accomplished long distance track star and led his teams to many league titles. Ray would have two sons who also would go on to don the purple and white with Ray, Jr graduating in 1978 and Ron in 1986. Manny Ortiz from the

class of 1975 remembers Ray attending Manny’s cross country meets. “he always had encouraging words for the team and was very supportive. That’s the kind of guy Ray was.

FALL 2013 - CHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

Debuting in this latest issue of the CHS Alumni Newsletter is a new feature entitled “Phantoms remembered”. Here, we will pay tribute to the many Phantoms who went on to achieve greatness for themselves, their community, and their country,

during their post-Cathedral years. Should any of our readers come across an obituary or two of a recently departed Phantom brother, please forward all info to Editor William Gallegos ‘89 at [email protected] so that it can be shared with the rest of the Cathedral community.

FREDERICK SPIELBERGER CLASS OF 1934

(1916-2012)

Frederick Spielberger was born in Lorain, Ohio. “Fred”, his only brother, and his widowed mother moved to Alhambra in the early 1920’s, where his mother had the opportunity to be a model for Norman Rockwell in several of his paintings.

In the 1930’s, Fred worked as a recording engineer and on-air announcer for radio stations in Southern California and Oregon. He enlisted in the US Army Signal Corps in 1941. His training got him promoted to Captain, becoming an instructor in the Officer Candidate School. A highlight of his career was in 1945, when he had the opportunity and responsibility to set up the recording equipment on the USS Missouri for the Japanese surrender to General MacArthur.

After the war, Fred accepted RCA Victor’s position to supervise the design and construction of their Mexico City recording studios, working his way up to Vice-President and then to General Manager of Columbia Records. It was

at this time where he met his wife of over 50 years, Marjorie, who passed away in 2000.

His family moved to Willow Glen, California in 1961 where for the next few decades, he developed careers in the brokerage, insurance, and mortgage businesses. He donated countless hours to many organizations in the community. On his 80th birthday, he received the good news that he had been selected by Coca-Cola to carry the Olympic Torch in 1996 in acknowledgement to his many contributions to the community. It would be a very proud and special moment in his life.

2013 ALUMNI GALA HIGHLIGHTS 6

12TH ANNUAL “RETURN TO CATHEDRAL GALA” Many of those associated with the

Cathedral Alumni Association have always insisted that the classes of the 1960’s continue to be the most active with the school. From the many fundraising events to the year-round sporting events, you will see their presense everywhere. But there are those younger classes who in recent years have made their presense known more and more as well. Take the class of 1992 for example. Whether it is the several tailgating gatherings on Savoy street prior to the football games or the parties away from CHS, celebrating the birthday of a ‘92 classmate who doesn’t want to admit they’re getting another year older, they too continue to keep their presense strong. As fellow ‘92 classmate Davian “Dave” Corona explains, “I feel it gives us a piece of our youth back, reliving the memories and knowing that these friends are the same ones who helped one another through some tough times in our lives. Since making their presense felt at their first alumni gala together in 2010, the class of 1992 have continued to compete for the ultimate prize at the gala, The Victor Balzano Spirit Award, given to the class with the largest turnout at the gala. To Dave, getting the award would show everyone associated with Cathedral how united his young

class still is after all these years. Though they have made it a “must” to win the award, they have always come short of walking away with it. As Dave explains, “we always seem to be like the Dallas Cowboys of Cathedral alumni classes.....making everyone believe that this will be our year, only for someone else to end up winning it all!” Still, for Dave and his wife Veronica, the two could not wait any longer for what they knew was going to be a fantastic evening. The 12th annual “Return to Cathedral Gala” was the big event of the year that once again brought out alumni from all eras. From the alumni of the early fifties to alumni as recent as the 2000’s, the Phantom spirit was definitely in the air. All could feel that it was going to be a special evening. The Gala once again hosted the celebration of reunions, with this year’s reuniting classes being those from 1958, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008, as well as a special recognition for the class of 1963, celebrating their 50th class reunion. After another memorable year at Dodger Stadium, it was no surprise that this venue would once again be the site of what is perhaps the CHS Alumni Association’s most popular event.

From the view of the downtown skyline to being located right in our own backyard, the 2013 gala could not ask for anything more when it came to pleasing the always large crowd. Opening up the event was Gala Chairperson Willie Marin ‘67, who welcomed the packed crowd to the event. After a few words from CHS

President Martin Farfan ‘86 and newly-elected Councilman Gil Cedillo, a big contributor to this year’s gala, CHS Principal Brother John Montgomery led all in a gala-opening prayer. Dinner was next on the agenda. This year’s menu was a combination of meat, chicken, and shrimp, with side dishes of sweet potatoes, vegetables, and salad. La Morenita Bakery, owned and operated by the family of Alex Pena ‘93, would once again provide the delicious cakes. Following dinner was the presentation

BIGGEST TURNOUT EVER HIGHLIGHTS EVENT of the awards. The “Victor Balzano Class Spirit Award”, for having the largest class present, was presented to the class of 1968, celebrating their 45th reunion. This year marked the 2nd time in a row a class from the 1960’s has won the award. As mentioned in the beginning of this story, gala history has shown that the

classes of the 1960s have always been the bread and butter of the galas (“they love the galas”). As with every gala, the highlight of the evening was inviting all the reunion classes on the dance floor for the singing of the Alma Mater. As for other gala highlights, the class of 1963 celebrated 50 golden years while Conrad Munatones from the class of 1952 received the award for “eldest alumnus” present. The entertainment for the evening was

the talented Top 40 band “Smooth Touch”, who offered old school, latin, and motown sounds. They performed from 8pm to Midnight, with one of their highlights being a special dedication of a “Line Dance” for the female audience. During each break, keeping the party going was the gifted DJ Phil Perez ‘84 who continued to keep the dance floor jumping until midnight as well. A big shout out also to the talented group of current CHS students and recent graduates, led by CHS music teacher Dr Brian Bartel, who opened up the gala with a few jazz numbers. Another tradition of the gala was for each reunion class to select an individual from their class who has made a difference in their community or has reached the highest level of their profession. One of these distinguished individuals, current CHS teacher, coach, and 1993 graduate Art Lopez, still looks back at this wonderful evening, “It was an honor to be have been recognized as a distinguished alumni and proud of the fact that my family and friends were able to share in this acknowledgement. I would also like to thank the Cathedral community for their support.” The evening also paid tribute to a number of teachers from both the

present and the past. These outstanding teachers honored this night were current teacher Minerva Preciado, Brother Armand Garcia, and Brother John Montgomery, the longest serving principal in the history of the school.. Once again, the “Phantom Big $10,000 Sweepstakes” was held, giving one lucky person a shot at $10,000. Ticket sales were going strong during the event as no one wanted to be left out of the opportunity to walk away with the big bucks. With the winner of last year’s drawing having been awarded to class of 1957 graduate Robert Baldonado, which Phantom graduate would win it this year? Class of 1961 graduate Joe Takahashi would be this year’s lucky winner to take home the

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT 10

JOSEPH “JOE” TORRENUEVA ‘61 J oseph “Joe” Torrenueva was born in

New York but moved to East Los Angeles with his brother Vince (CHS ‘56), sister Myrta, and mother Sixta, at a young age. While in East Los Angeles, he attended Santa Isabel elementary school and quickly learned and adapted to his new environment. Self motivated, Joe understood the financial difficulties his family faced after his father’s death at a young age. It was at this time when he developed a new talent....cutting hair. As Joe recalls, “my stepfather would always cut my hair and my brother’s hair. What he did not realize was that I would then go into the bathroom and quietly trim it a little bit here and there until it was the way I liked it”. Next thing you know, Joe was now cutting hair for his entire family.

It was at this time too that Joe was to decide where he would go for high school. Though just living near 8th street, a short distance from Salesian High, he would follow in his brother

Vince’s steps by attending Cathedral High School. Joe would be the only boy from his elementary class heading there. Joe’s way of getting to Cathedral each morning was quite different from any

other student. Unlike most students, who would take the same route to school, whether by bus, foot, bike, or car, Joe took several different bus routes each week. On some days, Joe would take the 52 bus line, because

it was occupied by the cute girls of Sacred Heart, who were heading to school. On other days, he would take the 47 bus line, because that bus was occupied by the cute girls of both Loretto and Bishop Conaty, also heading to school. Eighty-plus years of CHS graduates and I am guessing Joe is the only Phantom to this day ever capable of

doing this each morning. During his time at Cathedral, Joe assisted with the financial obligations around the house by now cutting his classmates’ hair, by having a paper route, and by working at a local drug store. Always a personable individual, he stayed out of the gang activity that surrounded his community. He participated in sports and served as an alter boy at Santa Isabel. Joe has always credited his success to his mother, who in the light of several challenges, provided consistent love and support. Another way Joe was earning money was by peforming in front of dance hall crowds under the name of Joe Trenay. He also played with such bands as The Skylighters, The Bob Caro Band, and Rene Block. It was at this time in his life that things were about to change. It was 1959 and a friend by the name of William (still a close friend to this day) suggested the two check out this hair

salon on Melrose and Fairfax by the name of “Sebring’s”. It was owned and operated by Jay Sebring, the hairdresser to the stars at the time. Jay was the first hairstylist to wash and shampoo hair, before cutting it, only to then finish it off with gel, hairspray, and/or hair drying. No one at the time was cutting hair like Jay. Both Joe and William were amazed at the skills of this talented man. Joe knew that this was not going to be the last meeting with him.

With his 1961 CHS graduation now by, Joe already knew what his future was going to be. Both he and William would be enrolling in the Comer and Doran beauty school, once located on Hollywood and Ivar. It was the school where many of the best hairdressers had once attended, including Jay Sebring. With his experience of

haircutting, his years of reading hair fashion magazines (given to him occasionally by his mom’s friend), and his determination, the most important 9 months of Joe’s life was about to begin. Now 1962, and having completed beauty school, Joe was determined to work for the man he had first heard about just 3 years earlier while still attending Cathedral. With the help of 2 models, young Joe walked into Sebring’s place and presented his hairdressing skills to Jay, who was greatly impressed. Joe was hired immediately and a new friendship was born. Joe would work for Jay Sebring until 1966, when Joe would set out for his own hair salon on the Sunset Strip, just across the street from the Roxy. Still, Joe and Jay’s friendship would take off, even through some tough times from the opposition. It was during this friendship that a bit of controversy was arising. It seemed that a group of barbers were protesting the fact that “hairdressers” were now “cutting hair”, just like barbers were. With the help of a client, Joe and Jay were introduced to then Orange County Assemblyman Ken Cory. At this time,

Joe and Jay would form the “International hair designers guild”. With the help of Assemblyman Cory, the two helped pass a bill in Sacramento that would give hairdressers the opportunity of taking the barber test without going to school for it. This bill opened the door for other hairdressers who also wanted to cut men’s hair the same way barbers did. This not only would go down as a great moment in the history of hairdressing, it would be a proud moment for the two young hairdressers. In 1969, Joe would end up taking the barber test and would pass with flying colors. Sadly, Jay did not get that chance to take it. On the week that the test was to take place, Jay Sebring, along with a few notable friends, would fall victim to the infamous followers of Charles Manson. It was now the 1970’s. Joe would continue his business on the Strip before expressing interest in a new location over at the Sunset Plaza in 1979. It was said that when Joe first talked to the Montgomery Brothers, who owned the land that both the vacant building Joe was interested in and the Sunset Plaza fell on (and whose family still continues to own today), they were impressed with Joe when he told them during his interview with them that he was a Cathedral graduate (it turned out the brothers were Loyola graduates). Joe would call the location on Sunset Plaza his new home away from home for the next decade or so. With rent costs rising and more traffic congesting the area, Joe would move once again to a new location in Beverly Hills, where he has still been at since 1992. Joe, the hairstylist to the stars, has worked on set and in person with Marlon Brando, Bob Barker, Norman

THE 2013 PHANTOM VOLLEYBALL SEASONMike Godoy ‘97, Phantom Volleyball Head Coach

Icould tell you the story of how our Cathedral Volleyball team won their

2nd consecutive CIF Southern Section Division IV championship but the more important story is how our team banded together to be the true definetion of a Phantom brother to one of their teammates, as his mom was fighting a bigger battle than the ones we were fighting on the volleyball court....cancer. In a society where “winning” is judged on wins and losses, it has dawned on me more and more that “winning” is not based on your overall record, or even chamionships. It is judged on character. “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are”. The legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden is one of four coaches I truly admire and take to heart what their coaching philosophy

is all about. It is not about the reputation....character is what counts. Yes, my team may have the reputation now of being CIF Champions again but what does that mean in life? Nothing. The mere fact my team is walking away with the character of brotherhood; which will take them so much further in life. That is the ultimate success in sports. It is OUR ultimate success in life. Just imagine-it is your senior year; your last year to make lasting memories before you are off to the real world. But then you get the news that your mom has breast cancer. Now, all the events you were looking forward to during your senior year of high school are no longer important...Grad nite, Prom, and Volleyball. Moreover, how is an 18-year old kid supposed to deal with this heart-breaking news?.

If adults have a hard time dealing with this, what makes us think an 18-year old can? He can’t. Or so he thought he couldn’t. Little did he know that his struggles were our team’s struggles. His pain was our pain. His tears were our tears. His cries were our cries. His mom was our mom. Our volleyball team was not only his volleyball team but his family, brothers, and friends. He dedicated his season to his mom...for the battle she fought every day to fight off cancer. And she won. Because of your presense at these Seeing him smile and talk about how his team was there for him, supporting both of them, brought her therapy that no medicine could provide to anyone. He drew much strength from her as she did from him. There were days it seemed cancer was winning the battle as he would watch helplessly as his

$10,000 prize. Sal Holguin from Salesian High would take home the $1000 prize (the second mustang in three years to take home a Big 10 prize.....they love our galas too) and class of 1963 graduate Ralph Noriega would take the $500 prize. Perhaps next year, it will be your turn to claim a prize. Alumni President and Gala committee member Hector Roman ‘76 was once

again pleased with another great evening, “the weather, the view, and the music were perfect. There were nothing but smiles in the crowd. It was definetely an amazing event”. Gala chairperson and class of ‘67 member Willie Marin also once again looked back at another successful gala, “another amazing Gala. I would like to thank each of you for making this year’s Gala the GREATEST. With it being the most attended, the site looked great while the music of both the band and DJ Phil packed the dance floor (a bigger dance floor from last year) all night long. What was most impressive was that we had the largest younger crowd ever. They saw that they can hang with us older alumni and learn of a few dance steps from Ralph Noriega ‘63. We sold more Big 10 tickets at the event ever. As for our

mom went through grueling chemo-treatments and its after-effects. But his teammates never let him be down. He drew strength from them when there was nowhere else to draw strength from. He never gave up. Yes, I am proud of the accomplishments my team has made on the court but I am proud my team is walking away with a stronger sense of character. It not about the CIF ring. It is not about the CIF banner on the gym wall. It is about “a team becoming your family”....a true family where we are there for each other. My team may not have received a rally for winning CIF, or an assembly, or a banner unveiling, or even a special on our school TV network, but they received a lesson in life....the battles on the volleyball court are nothing compared to the battles we fight every day in life. People think I coach this team when in fact, they coach me, in life. This is not only “our story” but “your story” as well. There are many other teams out there with similar life stories, but unfortunately they don’t have a

priviledge to share it because they haven’t been “successful”. Well, they are successful. I see many coaches and teams out there with similar character examples of their student-athletes. And although their stories may go unheard, I hope they know God is watching and is with them every stop of their journey.

LOOKING BACK 14

HOMECOMING PRINCESSES THROUGH THE YRSLena Mazadiego-Carbajal, Our Lady of Loretto High School ‘77

It was the fall of 1976. America was a little over 200 years old, disco was at

its peak, ex-Beatle Paul McCartney and his band Wings were filling up arenas all across the country, a movie about an unknown boxer’s shot at a world title was a box office success, and way before there was “Kobe” or “Lebron”, a young sports star by the name of “Dr J” was every kid’s sports idol. I was a young teenager living in Lincoln Heights, getting ready for what would be my final year at Our Lady of Loretto, the all girls catholic high school over in the Rampart/Echo Park area. Having just spent most of my summer working at the McDonalds over near County Hospital, it was time to reunite with my friends Gigi, Irene, Norma, Renee, Becky & Maria. With roughly 10 months left as Loretto students (and under the leadership of Principal Sister Elizabeth Avalos), it was a must that this final year be memorable. One of those ways it was to be memorable was by representing my school as part of the

court in the upcoming Cathedral High School Homecoming. My association with Cathedral dates back to the early 1960’s when my oldest brother Joe Mazadiego, attended the school. He would graduate in 1966. Next oldest brother Everett would don the purple and white years later as part of the class of 1972. Youngest brother Louie was still a kid at Our lady help of Christians, but he too would be joining his older brothers when it came to attending Cathedral, as part of the class of 1980. With 1966 and 1972 having been Joe’s and Everett’s years to shine at Cathedral, the fall of 1976 was to be my year to shine at Cathedral. So there I was, getting myself to apply for a shot at the court. Being part of the court would be another addition to my proud Cathedral resume, having also been involved with CHS as a JV cheerleader (sophomore year), a Varsity cheerleader (junior year), part of the

Ballet Folklorico (junior year), a water girl for the football team (senior year) and the many summer jobs at Cathedral with teacher Mr Domenic Puglisi (brother Joe’s CHS classmate from 1966). And in just a matter of time, I was there! I was now part of the 1976 Cathedral Homecoming Court. Next up, a shot at the Queen’s title. The first step I had to take was facing the student council in a CHS classroom. My thoughts that day was definetely both nervous and confident, with me not even sure in what order. Representing the CHS Homecoming court was an honor but representing Loretto was an even bigger one. I was happy to know that I would be part of a court that would also include my good friend from Loretto, Jay Chun. Also representing the court would be two other good friends Sandra Elizondo and Patsy Gallardo, both from Ramona Convent and both of whom I still keep in touch with to this day.

Soon following, just days later, was the introduction of the court to the entire CHS student body and faculty. I would be escorted into the Brother Bertram Coleman gymnasium by Cathedral senior Saul Felomino. I still remember the rally that morning, full of energy, excitement, and or course, class spirit. The rally would be followed by the luncheon at the Castaways in Burbank, attended by the court and the faculty. After an exciting game that saturday morning, it was time for what Phantoms saw as the biggest dance of the year.....the 1976 Homecoming Dance. Now of course, this was the mid-1970’s and where there was dancing, there was fashion and was there plenty of it to see that at that dance! Disco Fashion was very popular. There was platform shoes, Rayon and Polyester Wrap dresses. Both the men and the women wore three piece suits. As for the hairstyle, it was either feathered or

shag.

And then there was the music of the night. Three live bands, Best of friends, Changing Times, and Wizdom, had us on the dance floor all night to such popular tunes as “Play that funky music (Wild Cherry) and “Shake your booty” (KC and the Sunshine Band), as well as such popular slow-jams as “Colour my world (Chicago) and “Reasons” (Earth, Wind, and Fire). I would suggest Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t she lovely after the Queen was announced. That weekend of Homecoming “76” was exciting. I still have the poster promoting the event. What I saw as nothing more than a dream my freshman year would go on to be a reality my senior year. My association with Cathedral today is just like it was when I entered high school in the fall of 1973. After 40

years, it’s like I never left. I have been married to class of 1972 graduate and current Alumni Association Vice-President Carlos Carbajal, who together, can be seen supporting our Phantom family at almost every CHS event with our twin sons Adrian & Andre. The twins will both be entering Cathedral next year, finally making me a CHS/Phantom mom after all these years! But still, way before all of this, I was once that CHS Homecoming Princess on stage in front of the packed dance crowd. And still, at every yearly CHS Homecoming, I can remember those beautiful memories of November 6, 1976 and what was like for me, Lena “MazaCathedral” (my nickname in High School), to be part of the great CHS tradition. A Phantom Forever!

president, he doesn’t want to take any credit for his work this year, but at our meetings and the Gala, he made sure everything ran smoothly. Besides all the compliments I received, one alumni thought we had 2,000 people at the Gala”! As for Dave Corona’s hopes of his class winning the Balzano Spirit Award next year, “in the words of your average Dallas Cowboys fan,

Though many showed up for the purpose of enjoying a great night with friends not seen in years, they also showed up for the purpose of helping the many CHS families who struggle with today’s tuition costs. culture is evident through his work in various films and television series. Joe has been credited for the slick-back hair look of Michael Douglas in Wall Street (and later made popular with Pat Riley during the Lakers “Showtime” era) as well as the hair style of Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate. He also was the hair stylist to such classic TV shows as Get Smart, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Rockford Files, and Hart to Hart. He has also appeared on such shows as Spencer for hire, Melrose Place, and Beverly Hills 90210. He is experienced in martial arts (having once trained with Bruce Lee) and even had the privilege of performing on stage with Tito Puente and Celia Cruz (he studied trumpet and French horn while at CHS). As for his association with Cathedral today, since 2006, he has served on the School’s Board of Trustees and even once served as the treasurer for the Alumni Association, alongside the

late Ray Meza ‘54 and Danny Loya ‘56, the cousin of Joe’s wife of roughly 50 years, Olivia (a Sacred Heart graduate). As for the importance of Joe giving back to Cathedral, “I see these CHS kids and I see myself. The Christian Brothers, who I have always seen as “my big brothers”, made Cathedral a safe place and a home away from home. They made me who I am today. These kids deserve a shot and it’s our obligation as Cathedral alumni to give back and help”. Here’s to Joe Torrenueva ‘61, our CHS Alumni spotlight recipient for the fall of 2013.
