St. Margaret of Scotland Saint of the Day for November 16 (1045—November 16, 1093)

Margaret of Scotland was a truly liberat-ed woman in the sense that she was free to be herself. For her, that meant freedom to love God and serve others. Not Scottish by birth, Margaret was the daughter of Princess Agatha of Hungary and the Anglo-Saxon Prince Edward Atheling. She spent much of her youth in the court of her great-uncle, the English

king, Edward the Confessor. Her family fled from William the Conqueror and was shipwrecked off the coast of Scotland. King Malcolm befriended them and was captivated by the beautiful, gracious Margaret. They were married at the castle of Dunfermline in 1070. Malcolm was good-hearted, but rough and uncultured, as was his country. Because of Malcolm’s love for Margaret, she was able to soften his temper, polish his manners, and help him be-come a virtuous king. He left all domestic affairs to her, and often consulted her in state matters. Margaret tried to improve her adopted country by promoting the arts and education. For religious reform she encouraged synods and was present for the discussions which tried to cor-rect religious abuses common among priests and laypeople, such as simony, usury, and incestuous marriages. With her husband, she founded several churches. Margaret was not only a queen, but a mother. She and Malcolm had six sons and two daughters. Margaret personally supervised their religious instruction and other studies. Although she was very much caught up in the affairs of the household and country, she remained detached from the world. Her private life was austere. She had certain times for prayer and reading Scripture. She ate sparingly and slept little in order to have time for devotions. She and Malcolm kept two Lents, one before Easter and one before Christmas. During these times she always rose at midnight for Mass. On the way home she would wash the feet of six poor persons and give them alms. She was always surrounded by beggars in public and never refused them. It is recorded that she never sat down to eat without first feeding nine orphans and 24 adults. In 1093, King William Rufus made a surprise attack on Alnwick castle. King Malcolm and his oldest son, Edward, were killed. Margaret, already on her deathbed, died four days after her husband. Reflection: There are two ways to be char itable: the “clean way” and the “messy way.” The “clean way” is to give money or clothing to organizations that serve the poor. The “messy way” is dirtying your own hands in personal service to the poor. Margaret’s outstanding virtue was her love of the poor. Although very generous with material gifts, Margaret also visit-ed the sick and nursed them with her own hands. She and her husband served orphans and the poor on their knees during Ad-vent and Lent. News From The Streets…

1 Lost Sheep! By Mary Martha Primerano Anthony seemed a lot younger than his 47 years when we met. There he was sitting with another man and woman very near 1-45 and Scott St. During our bible study we shared that we are all related because we all came from Adam and Eve, the very first humans created by God. This statement stunned the group! Stunned, possibly because of all the racial tension that is occurring lately. We continued to minis-ter the words of Jesus – found in John 17:21 “May they be one Father just as you are in me, and I am in you.” Anthony sat there intently listening, but only listening, not saying any-thing while others offered their opinions – opinions, as Walt often tells the group “what good are opinions, if they don’t line up with the Word of God?” After everyone received their food bag, clothing, and prayer, it was time to pack it up. At that point Anthony quickly opened up his heart to me, and began to share that he is a truck driver by profes-sion, but has lost everything. His family, home, and ID. All because of wrong choices he’s made by his own admission. Self sabotage was another word he used to describe his situation. Someone said, “hey Anthony, you know there is this faith based men’s rehab down the street, ready to take someone like you in. When you are ready just head on over there!” Anthony replied, “I’m ready! I’ve had enough of these streets. This is not for me! I need to get my life straightened out!” We all stood there and agreed. And just like that, he picked up his few belongings, and jumped into the SUV for a ride to the rehab home. Once there, he turned in his lighter and bag of tobacco – he meant business! Then he was given a hot meal. I’m so glad we were able to help Anthony make this decision to get off the streets once and for all. He is important to God. Just like the parable of the lost sheep in Matthew 18. The Sheppard will leave the 99 sheep to look for the 1 lost sheep and rejoices when he finds it!

Prepararse para despertar.- La invitación de Jesús es clara: "Estén, pues, preparados, porque no saben ni el día ni la hora" (Mt 25,13). En esta parábola en particular Cristo admite que hay una especie de sueño que nos envuelve a todos, porque la diferencia entre unas y otras doncellas no está en que unas durmieron y otras no. Lo que las diferen-cia no es en este caso el sueño sino cómo se dispusieron para la hora del banquete, es decir: cómo prepararon su despertar. Algunas simplemente no prepararon su desper-tar. El cansancio, el hastío o la oscuridad de la noche les ganaron y ellas pasivamente entregaron al sueño sin pensar qué podría suceder después. Otras en cambio, aunque sinti-eran que la noche les podía vencer, hicieron acopio de aceite, de modo que al despertar pudieran contar con algo para vencer a la noche. Es un asunto de conciencia: unas fueron conscientes de que podían dormirse, y tomaron me-didas al respecto; otras sencillamente se dejaron ganar del sueño. Para nosotros, ¿qué es preparar el despertar? De-pende de qué sueño estemos hablando. Uno puede pensar en el sueño de la muerte, cosa que suena muy concorde con el tono escatológico de estos capítulos finales del evangelio de Mateo. Quienes se dejan llevar por este sueño son quienes extinguen su mirada sobre este mundo como si na-da realmente fuera a suceder después. Quienes, por el con-trario, son previsivos, guardan aceite, que es una manera de guardar luz. Aunque su cuerpo sea vencido por el sueño, hay un poco de luz que no duerme con ellos. ¿Qué luz esta-mos guardando? ¿Qué puede alumbrar en nosotros cuando ya nos hayamos dormido, esto es, cuando ya la muerte nos haya sometido a su poder? Buscar la sabiduría.- La pr imera lectura nos habla también de la luz: "radiante e incorruptible es la sabiduría" (Sab 6,12). La sabiduría es incorruptible; es un género de luz que corresponde bien al aceite de que nos habló el evangelio, porque aunque el sueño de la muerte nos atrape, la sabiduría no está sujeta al imperio de la muerte y puede estar con nosotros cuando se escuche la voz: "...¡llega el esposo!" (Mt 25,6). Vale la pena recordar que esta sabiduría es mucho más que conocimiento. No se trata de erudición o de capacidad intelectual, aunque tampoco riñe con ellas. Esta sabiduría sale al encuentro de quienes la buscan "y colabora con ellos en todos sus proy-ectos" (Sab 6,16). Consiste más, entonces, en una ciencia para la vida, un saber vivir. Por consiguiente el mensaje sería: saber vivir el camino de esta vida prepara la vida que vendrá después de este camino. Entrar al banquete.- Por otro lado, no podemos perder

de vista qué rostro tienen la hora y el encuentro finales en esta parábola del Señor. Todas aquellas doncellas estaban invitadas a un banquete de bodas. Todas estaban aguardan-do al Esposo. Este cuadro proviene de las costumbres ju-días de aquella época pero conserva su validez y una fuerza alegórica inmensa en todos los tiempos. Esperar al Esposo es esperar un gozo que no tiene semejante en esta tierra. Las bodas son el día de la alegría, según expresión del Can-tar de los Cantares (3,11). Nosotros, pues, no esperemos en el vacío o en la incertidumbre. Somos llamados a compartir el día del gozo del Esposo, el día de la alegría de Cristo. En la intimidad de un banquete, que se anticipa en esta cena eucarística, Cristo nos dará a saborear el gozo de su cora-zón ante la belleza de su Esposa, la Iglesia.
