A hot breakfast brings hope

The line begins forming every Saturday at 4:45 a.m. outside our Cardinal Manning Center

on Skid Row in Los Angeles. For the last 24 years, men and women living on the streets

have known that this is the place come for breakfast. This warm meal is prepared and

served by parish members who are part of the St. Vincent de Paul conference at St. Basil

Catholic Church in Koreatown.

The conference members gather at 5 a.m. each Saturday to load up the food that they

prepared the day before. Students from their parish join with the adults each week to play

soothing orchestra music while the food is served and people enjoy the tasty meal. The

music program was formed specifically for this weekly meal program, and gives the teen-

agers an opportunity to “feel like I did something great,” in the words of Joshua, one of the

participants.

But it is not just the homeless men and women who benefit from the weekly service proj-

ect. “This helps us, too, I think,” said Joseph Ahn, who is one of the people who helps

make this program possible. “I love it and want to do this until I die!”

While getting up before 5 a.m. to serve breakfast at the Cardinal Manning Center may not

be something you can do, your gifts to St. Vincent de Paul help our residents have food

every day of the week. We are so grateful to the St. Basil Conference – and to you – for

always reaching out to help our neediest neighbors.

Christmas Joy for Needy Children

Because of donations from local businesses, schools and individuals, as well as your gen-

erous gifts, we were able to provide a spectacular Christmas Giveaway for hundreds of

families and children in need. You were truly part of a Christmas Miracle!

Last December, our 7th Annual Christmas Giveaway provided toys and shoes to more

than 1,000 children from the Los Angeles area. Three hundred and fifty families also re-

ceived three bags of food – enough for several meals during the holidays.

Nearly 150 volunteers made this event possible, hosting fun activities for the children

including face painting, ornament making and coloring. They even got to take photos with

Chipper, the CHP mascot. Boys and girls were delighted that Santa Claus showed up at

the event, and both parents and the children also enjoyed a special concert of Christmas

carols sung by the Sacred Heart High School Choir.

As parents thanked St. Vincent de Paul for this “Christmas miracle,” one message we

heard again and again was, “Thanks for putting a smile on my children’s faces.” That

heartfelt gratitude made the 7th Annual Christmas Giveaway a truly successful event for

all our staff and volunteers, too!

Partners for our Christmas Giveaway included Sysco LA that supplied 400 turkeys; Shoe Palace that

donated brand new shoes for the boys and girls; Navidad en el Barrio, a Southern California organization

founded by former NFL kicker Danny Villanueva that provided groceries; CHP CHiPs for Kids; CBS/KCAL;

Allen Lund Company; Cathedral High School; Sacred Heart High School; University Prep Value High

School; Tzu Chi Foundation; Transfiguration Elementary School; and Knights of Columbus.

Thank you!
