Check your tension - make a piece of knitting at least 15cm (6in) square. Lay it on a flat surface and place a firm ruler across the knitting. Use 2 pins to mark out 10cm (4in), then count the stitches. If less stitches than the stated tension are made, use finer needles, if more stitches, use larger needles.

TENSION 23sts and 32 rows equal 10cm (4in) over both patterns using 3 3/4 mm needles. 26sts and 34 rows equal 10cm (4in) over st st using 3 1 /4 mm needles.

Shape Neck Next row Patt 15, turn and leave rem sts on a spare needle. Work on first set of sts as follows: Dec one St at neck edge on next 5 rows. 10sts. Work 4 rows in patt. Change to 3mm needles and work 4 rows Kl, P1 rib. Buttonhole row [Rib 2, yf, K2tog] twice, rib 2. Work 3 rows more in rib. Cast off loosely in rib. Return to sts on spare needle. With right side facing, slip centre 10sts onto a holder, rejoin yarn at neck edge to rem 15sts and patt to end. Dec one St at neck edge on next 5 rows. Work 4 rows in patt. Cast off loosely.

SLEEVES Using 33/4mm needles cast on 48sts. 1st row (Right side) Knit. 2nd row Purl. 3rd row K3, * yf, K2tog, K6, rep from * ending last rep with K3. 4th row Purl. 5th row Knit.

6th row Purl. 7th row K7, * yf, K2tog, K6, rep from * ending last rep with K7. 8th row Purl. These 8 rows form the patt. Shape Top Keeping continuity of patt cast off 4sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec one st at each end of every foll 3rd row until 20sts rem. Cast off loosely.

SLEEVE BORDER With right side facing,using 3 1 /4mm needles, pick up and K 32sts evenly along cast on edge of Sleeve. Purl one row. Work picot cast off edge as follows: Insert needle through first St and * cast on 2sts, cast off 2sts, knit next st, there are now 2sts on right hand needle, cast off one st, return rem St to right hand needle and rep from *to end.

NECK BORDER Join right shoulder seam. Using 3mm needles, pick up and K7sts evenly across row ends of front rib, 10sts down left side of front neck, K across 10sts at centre front, pick up and KlOsts up right side of front neck, and K across 20sts at back neck. 57sts. Purl one row. Work picot cast off edge as given for Sleeve.

LOWER EDGE BORDER Using 3 1 /4mm needles, cast on lists and knit one row. Proceed as follows: 1st row (Right side) K3, yf, K2tog, Kl, SKPO, cast on 4sts on right hand needle, K2tog, Kl. (13sts). 2nd row K10, yf, K2tog, Kl. 3rd row K3, yf, K2tog, SKPO, [yf, K1] 4 times, yf, K2tog. (16sts). 4th row K13, yf, K2tog, K1. 5th row K3, yf, K2tog, SKPO, [yf, K1] twice, yf, SK2togPO, [yf, K1] twice, yf, K2tog. (18sts). 6th row K15, yf, K2tog, K1. 7th row K3, yf, K2tog, K11, K2tog. (17sts). 8th row Cast off 6sts, K7, yf, K2tog, Kl. (lists). These 8 rows form the patt. Cont in patt until Border is of sufficient length to fit all round lower edge of dress. Cast off loosely.

TO MAKE UP Press following instructions on ball band. Overlap rib at left shoulder over back shoulder and slip St row ends together at armhole edge. Set in Sleeves, placing centre at top of shoulder seam and gathering to fit armhole. Join side

and sleeve seams. Join edges of border and placing seam to centre back sew border neatly into position around lower edge of dress. Sew buttons on left back shoulder to correspond with buttonholes in rib.

BONNET Using 33/4 mm needles, cast on 72sts and work in patt as given for Sleeves of Dress for 32 rows. Shape Crown Work in st st shape as follows: 1st row (Right side) K1 , K2tog, K to last 3sts, K2tog, Kl. 2nd and every alt row K1 , P to last st, K1 . 3rd row [K2tog, K10] 6 times. 5th row [K2tog, K9] 6 times. 7th row [K2tog, K8] 6 times. 9th row [K2tog, K7] 6 times. Cont to dec in this way on every alt row until the row has been worked thus: K2, [K2tog] 6 times, K2. Break yarn. Thread yarn through remaining sts, draw up and fasten off securely.

BONNET BORDER Using 33/4 mm needles cast on 7sts and Knit one row. Proceed as follows: 1st row (Right side) K2, SKPO, cast on 4sts on right hand needle, K2tog, K1 (9sts). 2nd row Knit. 3rd row K1 , SKPO, [yf, K1] 4 times, K2. (12sts). 4th row Knit. 5th row Kl, SKPO, [yf, K1] twice, yfon, SK2togPO, [yf, K1] twice, yf, K2tog. (14sts). 6th row Knit. 7th row K12, K2tog. (1 3sts). 8th row Cast off 6sts, K6. (7sts). These 8 rows form the patt. Cont in patt until Border is of sufficient length to fit along cast on edge of Bonnet. Cast off loosely.

TO MAKE UP DO NOT PRESS. Join seam from crown for 5cm. Sew on border. Cut ribbon in half and sew to each end of Bonnet Border.

SHAWL Using 33/4 mm needles cast on 186sts. Knit one row. Purl one row. Work approximately 77cm in Rosette patt as given for Gown Back, ending with a 10th or 20th row. Knit one row. Purl one row. Cast off loosely.

BORDER Using 33/4 mm needles, cast on lists and proceed in Lower Edge Border Patt as given for Gown until border is of sufficient length to fit all round Shawl, gathering slightly at corners. Cast off loosely.

TO MAKE UP Press following instructions on ball band. Join cast on edges and cast off edges of Border together. Sew Border neatly into position all round Shawl gathering slightly at corners.

BOOTEES Using 3 1 /4 mm needles cast on 33sts. Knit 7 rows. Eyelet row (Right side) K2, *K2tog, yfwd, K1, rep from * to last St, Kl. Beg P row, work 3 rows St St. Divide for Instep Next row (Right side) K22, turn and leave rem lists on a white thread. Next row P11, turn and leave rem lists on a black thread. Instep Working on centre llsts, beg K row work 14 rows St St. Break yarn and leave these sts on the needle. With right side facing, slip first lists from black thread onto a 3 1 /4 mm needle with point at inner end. Join on yarn, pick up and K 1 4sts up row ends of instep, K across instep sts on needle thus: SKPO, K7, K2tog, then pick up and K 14sts down row ends of instep, slip last lists from white thread onto the second 3 1 /4mm needle with point at inner end, and K across these sts. 59sts. Beg P row, work 9 rows St St. Shape Foot 1st dec row K1, SKPO, K22, SKPO, K5, K2tog, K22, K2tog, K1 . 2nd dec row K1, K2tog, K21, K2tog, K3, K2tog tbl, K21, K2tog tbl, K1 . 3rd dec row K1 , SKPO, K20, SKPO, Kl, K2tog, K20, K2tog, Kl. 4th dec row Kl, K2tog, K19, sl 1, K2tog, PSSO, K19, K2tog tbl, Kl. TO MAKE UP DO NOT PRESS. Join back and sole seam. Cut ribbon in half and thread through eyelets of each Bootee to tie with bows at front.
