Box 158 Why do some Masses, and Mass prayers, seem longer than others? Good question! Just as not all holidays garner the same degree of celebration from us, so too not all Masses will carry the same degree of solemn expression. That is, some Masses will include more liturgical trimmings like music, incense and more ancient (and sometimes longer) texts. Concerning longer texts, Eucharistic Prayer I is a fine example. Just look at the example here below: EP I is significantly longer than EP II so as to draw us deeper into the mystery of this moment in the Mass through prayer and teaching, for when the church prays She is also teaching. While EP 2 will commonly be used at a week- day Mass, EP 1 would commonly be reserved for select Sundays and major feasts, like Christmas & Easter Vigil. Longer does not mean worse, and shorter does not mean better. Rather, we desire to select those expressions which suit the occasion. Christmas lights on the house at Christmas time warms the winter heart; however, those same Christmas lights on the house in June chill the summer spine. Such a sight seems strange to us. So too, those prayers and expressions which best befit the day are our goal and guide in celebrating that beautiful and ancient prayer: the Mass. ~Fr. Mitchell A word from the pastor, Fr. Why do some Masses, and Mass prayers, seem longer than others? Good question!

Just as not all holidays garner the same degree of celebration from us, so too not all Masses will carry the same degree of solemn expression. That is, some Masses will include more liturgical trimmings like

music, incense and more ancient (and sometimes longer) texts. Concerning longer texts, Eucharistic Prayer I is a fine example. Just look at the example here below:

EP I is significantly longer than EP II so as to draw us deeper into the mystery of this moment in the Mass through prayer and teaching, for when the church prays She is also teaching. While EP 2 will commonly be used at a week-day Mass, EP 1 would commonly be reserved for select Sundays and major feasts, like Christmas & Easter Vigil. Longer does not mean worse, and shorter does not mean better. Rather, we desire to select those expressions which suit the occasion. Christmas lights on the house at Christmas time warms the winter heart; however, those same Christmas lights on the house in June chill the summer spine. Such a sight seems strange to us.
