Year of Mercy Reflection

Meditations on Mercy - Mercy, like rivers of living wa-ter, flows from God's love for us. A merciful love so great that God himself became man, suffered, died, and rose for us, so that He could form a Church in which He would always be present to us, in the Eucharist and in the power to forgive sins. That's really what it all comes down to. The power of the Church to forgive sin, a pow-er bestowed on it by Christ. Flowing from the Father through the wounded heart of Christ, the Holy Spirit breathes new life into us at our baptism, as we are adopted into God's own family. When we sin, as we all do, God provides a path to re-newal through His Church. Never despair, never lose hope: no sin is too great for the cross of Christ. God's merciful love will breathe new life into our souls in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Come, Holy Spirit, come! Heal our wounds, our strength renew, on our dryness pour your dew, wash the stains of guilt away. On the faithful who adore, in your seven-fold gift descend, give them your salvation, Lord, give them joys that never end. Amen.

Ten Day Spiritual Retreat by Titus Brandsma {17 of 17} with Meditations on the Bl. Virgin Mary Leading to Intimacy with Jesus; taken from Essays on Titus Brandsma; Carmelite Media 2004 pages 247-261.

Day X of Retreat: Final Meditation

We should see the Mass as the expression of our sacrifice to God and Holy Communion as its com-plement. “Do this in memory of me” (Lk 22:19; 1 Cor 11:24). At the Last Supper he gave himself to us as food. On the cross he finalized his sacrifice, which is renewed in the Mass.

At the offertory, when the matter of sacrifice is on the paten and in the chalice, let us offer ourselves to God as well, so that he who transforms and changes the bread and wine into the flesh and blood of Jesus, also change us to the degree that we may say with St. Paul, “I live, no, not I, but Christ lives in me” (Gal 2:20)

During Mass, we call down the blessing of God on our offerings. “Let my prayer rise as incense in you sight” (Ps 140:2). The priest incenses the offerings the matter of sacrifice, saying these sublime words: “May this incense, blessed by you, O Lord, rise before you, and may your mercy come down on us.”

“Raise up your hearts,” open for the Lord so that he may enter with his mercy and grace. “And I, when I am raised up from earth, will draw all things to myself” (Jn 12:32). We are beneath the cross so that the blood of Christ may fall on us and purify us.

Once more we hear these words on his lips: “Behold your mother” (Jn 19:27). This is the final proof of love. With Mary let us press close to Jesus and drink the pure blood from his side, which will transform us into new men and women.

Holy Communion is the seal on our vows (our Baptism) “The Body of Our Lord Jesus Christ keep your soul for eternal life. Amen”

Spiritual Practices

Ignatian Spirituality

One of Ignatius' greatest gifts to the church through is Exercises is the Rules for Discernment. The process helps us understand the language that God speaks, and allows us to listen with our whole selves. In discern-ment, we consider in prayer what we experience through our intellect, emotions, and spirit. In other words, in the Ignatian method, every choice involves the whole self. The rules, once incorporated into life, make a huge difference in the ability to understand where God is calling us. Discernment opens the heart and mind so we can better answer the question: what shall I do and how should I proceed so that I can follow God's will for me?
