LIBERATION AND REFORM While you might have to reach for an

atlas to determine that Isaiah is speaking

about Galilee, today’s first reading (part

of which was read at Christmas) is

prophetic of Jesus’ future ministry in that

province. The light that brings salvation

and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ.

Liberation is the theme: liberation from

both ignorance (“darkness”) and sin (the

“yoke”). As Isaiah identifies a place, so

Paul describes an attitude: the attitude that

develops, even among good people, of

equating their own will with the common

good. This always brings dissension, and

so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not

allow this; we are all members of

“Christ’s party.” The gospel is not to

divide us. Matthew quotes from Isaiah

in today’s Gospel, presenting Jesus as the

fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecies. The

theme is “Repent, for the kingdom of

heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). To

spread this message, Jesus begins to select

disciples, four of whom we meet today:

LIBERACIÓN Y REFORMA Aunque quizá tengas que usar un atlas para

determinar que Isaías está hablando de

Galilea, la primera lectura de hoy (parte de

la cual se leyó en Navidad) profetiza el

futuro ministerio de Jesús en esa provincia.

La luz que trae la salvación y regocijo es,

fundamentalmente, Cristo. El tema es la

liberación: liberación de la ignorancia

(“tinieblas”) y también del pecado (el

“yugo”). Mientras Isaías identifica un

lugar, así Pablo describe una actitud: la

actitud que crece, incluso entre gente

buena, de equiparar su propia voluntad con

el bien común. Esto siempre origina

desacuerdo, y así ha ocurrido en Corinto.

Pablo no permitirá esto; todos somos

miembros del “partido de Cristo”. El

Evangelio no es para dividirnos. Mateo

cita a Isaías en el Evangelio de hoy, y

presenta a Jesús como el cumplimiento de

las profecías de Isaías. El tema es

“Conviértanse, porque ya está cerca el

Reino de los Cielos” (Mateo 4:17). Para

difundir este mensaje, Jesús comienza a

elegir discípulos, y hoy conocemos a cuatro

Giai thoát la chu đê : Giai thoát khoi ca vê tât lam ngơ (chi bong tôi) va tôi lôi (chi ách). Khi Isaiah xác nhân vê nơi chôn, vi thê Thánh Phaolô mô ta môt điêu bô : cư chi đươc phát sinh ngay giưa nhưng ngươi tôt co cung ươc muôn tương đông vơi lơi ích chung. Điêu nay luôn đem lai môi bât hoa như no vân xay ra ơ Corintô. Thánh Phaolô không cho phép điêu nay xay ra, chung ta hêt thay la thanh phân cua Đưc Kitô. Tin Mưng không phai đê chia re chung ta. Thánh Mathêu trích lơi ngôn sư Isaiah trong Tin Mưng hôm nay, trinh bay Chua Giêsu la Đâng kiên toan lơi ngôn sư Isaiah. IS GOD CALLING YOU? MEN’S DISCERNMENT RETREA

The annual discernment retreat for men who are interested in ex-

ploring a vocation to the priesthood will be held January 27-29, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park. The retreat includes

time to meet men already studying to be priests, listen to the ex-perience of their call to the priesthood, and see what life is like at

the seminary. if you are considering the priesthood, or if you have

a young man in your family or circle of friends whom you see as a possible future priest, please take some time to pray and think

about this chance to explore the vocation journey, without any cost or obligation. Very often, seminarians say they finally took the leap

of faith precisely because an aunt, a pastor, a parent, a sibling, or a

good friend said to them: “Have you ever thought of becoming a Catholic priest? I think you’d be a great one — and here’s why.”

The retreat is open to single men 21 years or older, and is free. For

participate in a Poverty Simulation Activity on:

This poverty simulation experience is designed to help partici-

pants understand what it might be like to be a part of a typical

low income family trying to survive from month-to-month. It is

a simulation, not a game! The object is to sensitize participants

to the realities of life faced by low income people, while pro-

viding concrete suggestions for further advocacy.
