Pastor’s Corner

As we’re all enjoying the unofficial arrival of Spring, we want to congratulate our newly Confirmed members of the parish. Bishop LaValley confirmed them at St. Mary’s in Pots-dam on Saturday morning. You’ll see the full list of the candidates and the ministries that they will be serving in for at least the next two years.

Many of you will be with us for the other Sacrament of Initiation this weekend: 15 of our young people will be receiving their first Holy Communions at the 9:00 AM Mass. May they stay as close to Our Eucharistic Lord throughout their lives as they are today.

Thanks again to all of you who helped out with the Youth Rally. It was great having a 150 youth and young adults at the school last Saturday and at the Church for the 5:00 PM Mass. Thanks in a special way to all of you who baked the delicious cookies for the event. The kids (and maybe even more, their chaper-ones) raved about them!

Please remember that this Thursday is a Holy Day of Obliga-tion. We celebrate the fullness of Easter in the Ascension of our Lord—40 Days into Easter!

The past couple weeks we’ve been asking for people to contact the rectory if you want your loved ones still included on our weekly Prayer List. As you can see, we’ve only had two calls. Our plan from this point forward is to keep people on the list for three weeks per request. Of course, we’ll happily put them on for longer, but we’d like to hear back from you every three weeks so we stay updated.

Finally, please stay tuned. Next week we’ll be releasing a sur-vey about the Summer Mass Schedule. I’m looking for ideas about whether or not to continue the 5:00 PM Sunday Mass from June to August. Have a great week. —Fr. Bryan Stitt

Novena for Pentecost Starting May 10

The novena in honor of the Holy Spirit is the oldest of all novenas since it was first made at the direction of Our Lord when He sent His apostles back to Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost. Addressed to the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, it is a power-ful plea for the light and strength and love so sorely needed by every Christian.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Ask Father Stitt

We hear that the First Communion Children have been asked to receive Communion on their tongues. Is this true? If so, could you please explain why? I was never taught to do so.

Yes. Thanks for asking. The Church gives us the option of receiv-ing either on the tongue or in the hand. While I realize that there is nothing wrong with doing the latter, I’m afraid we’ve handi-capped people if we’ve never taught them the former.

Everyone realizes that if they receive in the hand, they must do so with care and reverence. St. Cyril, way back in the 4th Century taught: “Receive Communion by making a throne: one hand un-der the other, ready to receive our great King.” And when we do so, we should always be aware of any particles of the host that are also received, and we make sure to consume those as well.

But what we may not realize is that there are times when we will not be able to receive in our hands. Three good examples: When people come forward while carrying a baby—we sure don’t want them dropping the child while trying to “make a throne” for Je-sus. We’re pro-Life! Also if we’re on crutches, using a cane, or in some other way physically immobilized. Or maybe we just helped someone change their tire on the way in to church and still have grease all over our hands.

In any of these cases (and maybe simply because we feel that it is more reverent), I would encourage someone to receive directly on the tongue. I know it is a bit awkward to do so, if you’ve never (or infrequently) done so. That’s why I’ve asked the kids to be prepared to receive this way.

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in your hands. We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge your will and know that whatever you do, you do for the love of us. Amen.
