Grace to you and peace from God our Father and our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ!
Many Christian faith traditions call the period between the Day
of Epiphany and the day before Ash Wednesday “Ordinary
Time.” The time after Epiphany for the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America, particularly for Christ Lutheran, is anything
but ordinary! These are exciting times!
The word epiphany means “manifestation” or “revelation." Through the power of the
Holy Spirit the future of our Lord’s ministry here at Christ has been revealed during this
time of year. The transitional ministry period that began upon the retirement of Pastor
Bill Munz is reaching its conclusion. You were blessed to have the guiding hand of
Bob Pastor Modr lead you as your interim pastor for 14 months. A few weeks ago you
celebrated a Call Sunday, in which you extended a call to Pastor Mark Kreemer to serve
as your new pastor. Yes, these are exciting times!
The Congregation Council, upon the recommendation of Bishop Robert Rimbo, asked
me to serve as Christ’s “Coverage Pastor” beginning on January 1st until Pastor
Kreemer’s arrival, expected March 22nd. This assignment is in addition to my regular
call as an Assistant to Bishop Rimbo. My responsibilities at Christ will be to provide
pastoral care during emergencies, attend congregational meetings and events when per-
missible, provide leadership for the confirmation program, aid in any administrative is-
sues as required, and either assist in arranging or personally providing pulpit supply for
worship liturgies. If anyone needs to reach me, please do not hesitate to call me at 631-
873-6985.
Let us celebrate these exciting times!
Blessings,
Rev. Marc Herbst

r E-Giving Did you know that there could be up to a two week delay between the time you set up your e-giving and it
is recorded by the financial Secretary? When you indicate a contribution to the church through your

the mail is received your check is then included with that week’s Sunday offering and is deposited into the

SNOW EMERGENCY INFORMATION
At the December 16, 2013 meeting the congregational council
discussed procedures to follow in the event of snow. What was
decided is as follows:
If we have a major snowstorm on Saturday going into Saturday
night and the roads are impassable, church services will be can-
celled for Sunday morning. This message will be on the church
website as well as the church answering machine.
In the event of a lesser amount of snow, the decision to have Sun-
day morning services will be made after the president of the congregation calls our Supply Pastor and Konstantza.
This may result in having one service later in the morning after the walkways and parking lot have been cleared.
Again, the information will be on the church website and the answering machine.
The major concern is the safety of everyone including our Supply ministers who are coming from throughout the met-
ropolitan area and Konstantza coming from Queens. Another consideration is how quickly the parking lot can be
plowed and the walkways shoveled. We are very fortunate to have John Newhoff plow our parking lot, but we need to
remember he volunteers his time to do this for us. The time spent plowing our parking lot takes him away from his
paid plowing jobs. It is also much easier for him to plow when there are no cars in the parking lot and the snow has
not been driven on. Also, the shoveling is done by volunteers who first have to shovel their own driveways.
If there are any questions, please speak to a member of Council. Hopefully, this will not be an issue for us this winter.

LENTEN FOLDERS
Lent is a time for self-
reflection and a time to focus
more on self-discipline. Christ
was tempted by the devil and
constantly questioned by believ-
ers and those with doubts. The
Lenten Offering Folder is en-
closed for your use as a reminder
of the sacrifices made by God’s
only Son. Please use as part of
your faithful journey through
Lent and return it with your
Easter Offerings.
Bring the Word of God into your home
and we can help!
Pick up your copy of the Word in Season in the church
narthex for daily devotions. Beginning or ending your day
with a brief bible reading and reflection can really give
your day purpose and keep you on the right track.
For those with children, check out
Spark Family! A quarterly magazine
also in the church narthex that fits family
faith into everyday life.
DEACON’S
CORNER
FEB. 2015
Whenever I get a call from the church, the caller ID identifies the caller as “Christ”. I always
have the thought, “If only it was that easy!” Just pick up the phone and find out what God has
to say!
The Gospel readings from the last few Sundays have been about Jesus calling his disciples. In
last Sunday’s Gospel, He says to Philip “Follow me”; Philip not only follows, but almost immediately
invites someone else. Nathanael is very skeptical and Philip simply says to him “Come and see” Three
little words that have the power to change lives. Three little words that we can say today. We can say
them, but do we? Do we say them to our unchurched friends, neighbors and coworkers?
I have been hearing many questions from people about our new pastor. I’ve decided that my answer is
going to be the same as Philip’s – “Come and see” Come now before Pastor Kreemer begins in March.
Come and fully participate in the life of the congregation. Come and see how the congregation has been
functioning during our period of transition. Come and see for yourself how so many people in our 100
years have made our congregation what it is today. And then, beginning March 22, come and see how
God has called another pastor to Christ Lutheran Church. God blessed us with Pastor Munz for 30 years,
now He is blessing us again with Pastor Kreemer. This is a very exciting time in the life of our congrega-
tion! Come and see for yourself!
In Christ,
Janet
WORSHIP AND MUSIC—FEBRUARY. 2015
The W&M committee has been very busy scheduling supply pastors to lead Worship for
the next few weeks until our new pastor begins. We have Pastor Ray Ormand here for a
total of seven Sundays ( Jan. 18 – March 1). Then we will have Pastor Marc Herbst on
March 8 and 15. Pastor Herbst is also our Coverage Pastor for this time period. Pastor
Mark Kreemer’s first Worship Service will be on March 22!
Pastor Kreemer was nice enough to provide us with some suggestions for Mid-Week
Lenten Services. These services will be on Wednesdays in Lent at 7:00. We will be us-
ing a service based on the hymn “Beneath the Cross of Jesus”(ELW 338). These Ser-
vices will explore what it means for us to abide at the foot of the cross, to cling to the
rock of our salvation, to dwell in the house of the Lord and to confess our sins and re-
ceive God’s forgiveness. We will also be using a short video presentation on Prayer.
The following questions will be addressed – “What is Prayer”, “Why do we Pray”, How
do we Pray”, “When do we Pray” and “Does God answer Prayer”.
Looking further into the future, the choir will, once again, present a Cantata on Palm
Sunday at both the 8:45 and 10:45 Services.

Reflections on Amazing Grace "When we've been there 10,000 years, bright shining as the sun-we've no less days to sing God's praise than
when we first began."
This fourth verse of John Newton's famous hymn, Amazing Grace, written in 1779, talks of 10,000 years
not being too long for us to sing God's praise even as we had begun. We've only been here 100 years so we
surely have no less days than when we first begun!
The hymn, while written 236 years ago, was not in any of our previous hymnals until the LBW (green Lu-
theran Book of Worship) and now our current Red book.
Back in 1915, while we were setting roots in Germantown / Islip Terrace as a Lutheran presence, a hymnal
was in the works for 1917 publication. Its designation, The Common Service Book and Hymnal, was au-
thorized by The United Lutheran Church in America. That is the hymnal your parents and grandparents
used until 1958 (and maybe you also) and it is the hymnal that served our worship needs as a neophyte con-
gregation. Many of the hymns still survive, but if you ask anyone who has been around long enough to sing
hymns from this hymnal, they might have to think twice as to when they first became familiar with Amazing
Grace.
In 1958, we shifted our worship and hymn singing to the Service Book and Hymnal. It was compiled in
conjunction with The American Lutheran Church, The Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church, The Evan-
gelical Lutheran Church, The Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, The Lutheran Free Church,
The United Evangelical Lutheran Church and The United Lutheran Church in America. Our hymn reper-
toire was greatly enriched, but Newton's work, exclaimed how God's Grace had saved his life, was still not
included. We don't know if it had been originally included in the worship body of one or more of the con-
tributing churches and didn't make the cut in 1958.
It was the passage in 1st Chronicles, chapter 17, verses 16-17 that inspired Newton to acknowledge God's
grace as the transport over the rocky roads in his life.
We've been here in Islip Terrace for 100 years and we sing Newton's hymn as if we were weaned on it - in
worship, at funerals, even in celebration - who hasn't heard it played by a bagpiper? It's unlikely that we
have among us or near us, anyone that has been around for our 100 years, but we can, in solid faith, know
that the church will be bright shining as the sun with no less days to sing God's praise - even as we first be-
gun.
