The Story of 65 Roses65 Roses is what some children with CF calltheir disease because the words are much easierfor them to pronounce. Mary G. Weiss becamea volunteer for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in1965 after learning that her three little boys hadCF. Her duty was to call every civic club, socialand service organization seeking nancial supportfor CF research. Marys 4-year old son, Richard, listened closely to his mother as she made eachcall. After several calls, Richard came into the roomand told his Mom, I know what you are workingfor. Mary was dumbstruck because Richard didnot know what she was doing, nor did he knowthat he had cystic brosis. With some trepidation,Mary posed the question, What am I workingfor, Richard? You are working for 65 Roses, heanswered so sweetly. Mary was speechless. Shewent over to him and tenderly pressed his bodyto hers. He could not see the tears running downMarys cheeks as she stammered, Yes Richard,Im working for 65 Roses.

Since 1965, the term 65 Roses has been used

by children of all ages to describe their disease. But, making it easier to say does not make CFany easier to live with. The 65 Roses storyhas captured the hearts and emotions of allwho have heard it. The rose, appropriately theancient symbol of love, has become a symbolof the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.65 Roses is a registered trademark of theCystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Cystic brosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein prodcause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatelung infections and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body brdown and absorb food.

In the 1950s, few children with cystic brosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advanceresearch and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond.
