I loved storms as a kid. When thunderstorms would come in the summer, I would go out to the west field to watch them approach. It was exciting. I used to love snowstorms in the same way. There was something in the drama and power they unleashed that captured me. In some ways, that all remains true for me now. But as an adult, I have discovered that all storms are not fun. My naïve child-like joy did not take into account those who were injured or left homeless by the power of nature. Over the years, I have seen the power of storms change lives and disrupt entire communities. Of course, there are other storms of life. Illness, broken relationships, lost opportunities, and infinite types of tragedies are all life storms. We all experience them. Perhaps that is why the Bible often refers to the storms of life. Storms are often referenced as the place where the power of God is revealed. This month we will spend three weeks looking at the Storms of Life. (November 9-16-23). I look forward to walking with you during this dynamic series. Pastor Rick

The Emily Schmidt Memorial Trunk or Treat Trot Was Fabulous! The Trot hosted around 200 participants and has helped our Middle School Youth Group fund its Summer 2015 mission trip. Thank you to all of the participants and volunteers who made this possible.

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner is Friday, November 7th at 6:30m. Live Nativity and Community Advent Night is Wednesday, Dec. 3rd. Join us for dinner, walk through our live nativity, feed some animals at the live petting zoo, and join us for Christmas carols in the sanctuary. End the evening with cookies and cocoa/coffee in Fellowship Hall. You can grab dinner anytime from 5-7-pm. The live Nativity is open from 5-8pm. Carols will be from 7-7:30. Coffee, cocoa, and cookies will be served from 7-8pm.

FAMILY MINISTRY - FUEL

Youth Breakfast Club at 9 & 11am All 7th-12th graders are encouraged to join the Youth Breakfast Club at 9 and 11am in the Library. A light breakfast is provided. Our adult volunteers lead our youth in reading the scripture for that day, praying for our congregation and watching the pastor’s sermon together, as it is streamed live into the classroom. Following the sermon the leaders will guide our youth in discussion questions our pastors have provided related to the sermon that day. This is a great time for our youth to take part in the sermon while connecting with others in their peer group. I hope your youth will join us each Sunday. Sunday Night YOUTH GROUP for FUEL, Sunday’s 6-7:30pm November kicks off another exciting month for our youth ages 6th through 8th grade. We will be visiting some wonderful Saints from our church at their homes on 11-2nd. Raking leaves and running on 11-9th 2-4pm(please note the special time for youth group for this day). Working on a project for the Alternative Gift Fair while talking about Grace on 11-16 . We will end the entire month in a night of complete and utter fun!!! We are thinking indoor bounce houses, 9 square in the air and sardines, as well as many yummy treats. It is going to be a great month. LAY READER REFLECTIONS

Colors Signify Change It has happened again! Fall swings into gear and our surroundings have miraculously changed from bowers of summer flowers into a profusion of dazzling trees and piles of leaves to be raked. The black-eyed Susans, blue and rose hydrangea bushes, red hibiscus, pink petunias, zinnias, bright yellow daylilies, purple coneflowers, tall sunflowers, orange marigolds, fire-red impatiens, begonias and geraniums have given way to autumn, to the brilliance of burning bushes and sumac, to the magnificent foliage of the dying leaves on various maple, red bud, locust, ash, oak and willow trees. Intermingled and awash in His glory, they present us with awesome proof of His hand in creation. The colors shout His name! Change . . . ah, that word that can cause fright in our souls. Sweet, tiny babies grow into talkative toddlers and trying teens. An amazing parent evolves into someone we barely know through dementia. Why do things have to change . . . I was just getting used to . . . but, it is comfortable this way . . . Why change? Does God really want me to be different than I am? The answer is yes. God wants us transformed into His servants to bring a brilliance and love to the lives of all His people. Like leaves, something inside us may need to die in order to for us to see and realize His plan for us. Opportunities for change are what God offers us throughout our lives, day by day. No two days are alike, and how we respond is up to us. When life throws us a curve, an unexpected detour, a storm, it is how we weather and embrace change that will help us grow into His likeness. The risks on which I decide to embark are my choice. Each day can begin with a prayer, one such as our pastors sent last June:

Lord, Guide me by the power of the Holy Spirit to know what you want me to do in my life. Amen.

As the summer colors change into the burnished golds of autumn, so these colors turn to the white of snow, to spring tulips of red, and, once more, to summer hues. How we cope, bloom and grow through these changes in our lives depends completely on our walk with God. Brenda DuPree Lay Leader

ADULT EDUCATION

2014 Advent Study Sunday Parlor Class- meets on Sunday mornings between services in the parlor from 10:05- 10:55 am. Beginning November 9 we will be studying Under Wraps: The Gift We Never Expected. This is a DVD and book study (4 weeks) which will help us prepare ourselves for the greatest gift of all: Jesus! Join us in the parlor for this short term study! Coffee always served! January 2015 Studies Disciple 2 – Study of Luke and Acts with Pastor Rick. Begins January 6, 2015 thru April 28th, in Fellowship Hall from 7-8:30 pm. Be sure to sign up to reserve your workbook. This class studies ,the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts of the Apostles and tells the story of Jesus life and ministry and the early church. Tuesday Morning Parlor Study (meets 9:30-11 am)- Mary Gladstone-Highland will be leading the Bridges Out of Poverty study beginning January 6, 2015. This study looks at the dynamics that cause and maintain poverty from an individual to a systemic level and develops strategies and tools for a community to prevent, reduce, and alleviate poverty. Class meets January 6,13,20 and February 3,10,17.

CUMC Bookclub – All Readers Welcome! November 18th – Angry Housewives Eating Bon-Bons by Lorna Landvik. What else can I say? This novel sounds fun as we ramp up for the busy season! Bon-bons optional! January 20, 2015 – Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. This book is historical fiction based on the real life story of Sarah Grimke, a woman born in Charleston in 1803. She was the daughter of a South Carolina judge and plantation owner who became a voice for abolition, women’s rights and a Quaker. The book explores race relations, gender roles, the law and belief. Well written and wonderful for discussion!

MUSIC AND WORSHIP

C.H.R.I.S.T.M.A.S choir is gathering again. As a reminder, this is a choir

made up of people from the congregation that would like to sing together during

the Advent season. We will sing on the 1st Sunday of Advent (November 30th).

You need only sing for one service. We will meet in the front of the sanctuary on

November 16, 23 after the postlude. Rehearse for 15 minutes. Please join us.

Festival Singers will kick off your Christmas season with an amazing concert in our own C.U.M.C. Sanctuary on Sunday, November 30th at 4 p.m. Hear the beautiful voices of Festival Singers, some of whom are in our own congregation. Enjoy the traditional, fun Christmas music. You will be truly blessed! A Christmas cookie reception will follow in the narthex.

“Messiah” – Make a Note in your calendar. December 14th the CUMC Chancel Choir will offer selections from the Christmas section of “Messiah” by George Fredrick Handel for the Sunday services. We will have a string quartet, Jubilate Bells, and soloists from the choir. The scripture readings and discussion will center on the verses selected by Charles Jennens (the librettist) for “Messiah”. Join us at either 9:00 or 11:00 and bring your friends. It will be a great way to prepare for Christmas. HELP WANTED! – The Speaker Series Team is looking for some new members to help plan exciting and informative programs. We usually have four programs throughout the year designed for various age groups. Meetings are held at 9:00 a.m. usually on a Monday morning and are scheduled as needed. Team members are expected to attend the events if possible and help with set-up and/or clean-up when we host an event. Snowbirds are welcome to be a part of the Team. Adopt-A-Highway Pickup Crew Thank You On Saturday, September 27th, Clarkston United Methodist Church made its contribution to keeping America beautiful along I-75 between Baldwin Road and Giddings Road. The Men of The Church thank the following nine volunteers who generously gave their time collecting 46 bags of trash on that sun-drenched, fall morning: Jay Bleim, Bob Hoff, Alan Hoffman, George Moore, Russ Oltman, John Priebe, Tim Sherrow, Mary Tischer & Wayne Wills. THANK YOU TO AN ANONYMOUS PERSON On Sunday, February 5, 2012, my black leather jacket which was a gift from my wife mysteriously disappeared from the Fellowship Hall coat room. At that time my efforts to locate and retrieve it were fruitless. On Sunday, October 12, 2014, I found that the jacket with all of its pocket contents had just as mysteriously reappeared on a hanger in the same coat room. MISSION

I am truly one proud Missionary! Recently we needed to create a short video that described the mission work taking place at Clarkston United Methodist Church. In the planning process we were brainstorming what we should focus on during our 30 second clip, a task that many of you will know, is very daunting. How do we capture all that we do in 30 seconds? We decided to focus on one story of how lives are being changed through our commitment to Transformational Mission, a philosophy of mission that includes offerings of items, talents and money but also expands into real relationships being formed through our interactions. We asked Anita Demster and Zoe Winn to share the story of their friendship and I was honestly blessed by their enthusiasm as they shared about how much they have grown to care for each other. This is a relationship the goes far beyond phrases like “I am blessed by giving to ___.” or “I realize how much I have and should be grateful for when I am with___.” and instead is replaced with phrases like “I’ve known you so long I don’t remember where we met! She has been a bright light in my life, she is bubbly, and cute, and always has a project in mind. Around Zoe you can’t sit still, you have to be doing something, so I have learned to bake, she has gotten me every app possible on my new iphone, but most of all she has just been a sweet dear and very precious in my life.” and “Anita is a very important person in my life, she helps me with my homework, she is very informational, she is almost like a human dictionary! Sometimes if we are reading a book she will tell me what this word means, or what that word means, she is very educational. She is really nice and awesome!” When I say that I am “proud” I don’t mean in a condescending way but instead in a YES! I am so glad to be working with a group of individuals who are committed to learning from each other and loving one another! kind of way! Praise be to God! Blessings, Mary B. Crossroads District Annual Meeting Update “CREATED IN HIS IMAGE – MINISTRY WITH AND FOR THE DISABLED” - Crossroads District United Methodist Women Annual Meeting and Leadership Development Training was held on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at Fenton United Methodist Church. Guest Speaker was Mrs. Coleen Wilsdon, Former Chairperson of the Detroit Conference Committee on Disability Concerns.

Leadership Development Training took place in the morning after our Opening Session. In the afternoon we held our business meeting followed by our Worship Service with Communion. We received $727.00 in our Special Offering which was donated to Genesee Health Systems – Children’s Activities Fund.

CUMC United Methodist Women received the Mission Today Unit Objectives Certificate for being a Joy Unit again this year. Paula Acton and Suzanne Tinka received Certificates for completing Level 1 of the Reading Program.

CUMC received the “5 Star Church” Certificate again this year and Suzanne Tinka received the “5 Star Woman” Certificate. UMW Members attending from CUMC were Pat Edwards, Marilyn Pirie, and Suzanne Tinka.

Christmas Connection Every year at Christmas, CUMC sponsors 25-30 families for Christmas. 50 and OVER is a vibrant group that enjoys the fun and fellowship of monthly mid-day social gatherings. We meet for potluck lunches, programs and field trips. Liberian Missionaries – Lunch and Program Princess Jusu and Nancy Carew, United Methodist missionaries in Monrovia, Liberia, will be with us on November 11 to speak with us of their work. Princess previously itinerated here a year and a half ago. She has been in the US since July and has been unable to return. She and Nancy will talk about the Ebola crisis and the efforts to prevent the spread of this contagious disease. Her newsletter is posted on the Missions Bulletin Board. Speaker Series Team “DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS – How to Discuss What Matters Most” – Betty Kozma, Principal at L’Anse Cruz High School, will present a program on “Difficult Conversations” – from the book of the same title written by Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton, and Sheila Heen of the Harvard Negotiation Project. She will give us some insight into how to handle a difficult conversation - anything you find hard to talk about – conversations with your boss, your spouse, your friends, your kids, your clients. “Whether we’re dealing with an underperforming employee, disagreeing with our spouse about money or child-rearing, negotiating with a difficult client, or simply saying ‘no,’ or ‘I’m sorry,’ or ‘I love you,’ we attempt or avoid difficult conversations every day. No matter how competent we are, we all have conversations that cause anxiety and frustration. Betty is a former Clarkston teacher, has a Ph.D. in Education, and is a member of Clarkston UMC. Give Gifts that Change Lives

BUILDING COMMITTEE Since the September Town Hall informational sessions with the congregation, the Building Committee has spent the past several weeks identifying suitable Construction Management firms. The purpose of this role is to oversee and manage all aspects of the construction related activities, in partnership with our architect SA+A to execute our ministry expansion vision. The committee reviewed the qualifications of 4 reputable firms and made a recommendation to the Trustees, who approved Frank Rewold and Sons. Rewold has performed extensive work with churches, has experience with historic preservation, and has served the greater Michigan area for over 90 years. Their experienced staff has a good understanding of our ministry expansion needs and priorities and is an important resource moving forward. Additionally, we are working to understand the financial possibilities with our financial consultant Horizons Stewardship. We look forward to sharing the capital campaign plan and timeline in the coming weeks. Finally, the architect will begin to focus on the Detailed Design Phase, working with Rewold and the Building Committee and using feedback from the Town Hall sessions. The detailed design phase lasts approximately 3 months. The Building Committee will have regular meetings to review various details along the way, to ensure that the CUMC vision for "Honoring Our Tradition, Building our Future" is maintained. Please continue to pray for our church, our ministry vision and the possibilities that are available with this meaningful project. Thank you for your continued support.

TRUSTEES

The church took " a Mighty Hit" on August 29 and September 1 as storms ripped through the Clarkston area. Significant damage was done to the steeple and the youth lounge and classroom flooded twice. Insurance claims were filed, remediation and root cause of flooding was discovered and corrected. We are now in the final stages of restoration as we paint and carpet the lower level, install awnings over window wells and emergency door exit and steeple reconstruction wraps up. On November 18, we will hold our annual church conference at 7:30pm. This is a meeting open to the membership of the church. We will elect the leadership for 2015; receive a membership report, a Staff Parish Relations Committee report including ordained clergy compensation, and a statement of the direction of the church.
