January 2015

Our congregation was chartered in 1841, a historical moment in the life of our church and community.

In 1897, a brick church was built to hold the congregation on the corner of Buffalo and Church St., a great time of celebration in the life of the church and community.

In 1960, our congregation experienced a decade of growth in membership and witness. They broke ground and built much of what we know as our current church building. It was a time of action and commitment by the congregation, that allows us to exist today.

I believe 2015 will be one of those dynamic and holy years for this congregation. You have already heard about the need for new space and perhaps looked at the preliminary drawings of new construction. I am glad for the vision and passion this congregation has already started to share on this project. I willingly commit to do all I can to make this vision reality.

This critical work will be a a historical highlight in our church’s history. In conjuction with this will be the expansion of our work in ministry. This commitment to serve Christ with deeper resolve in all we do will change lives and communities for Christ. I look forward to the surprises of grace that will occur in our congregation this year. Christ is leading us to be blessed by and a blessing to growing numbers of individuals and families as we welcome them into our community of faith.

Our mission is to connect people to people and people to God. This coming year, that vision will become the witness others will testify about here at CUMC. Pray with me, walk with me and let us share with each other the joy and privilege of being in this ministry at this highpoint in our history.

To God be the Glory!

Pastor Rick

STAFF PARISH RELATIONS COMMITTEE The Staff-Parish relations committee is pleased to announce that Christine Wyatt is postponing her retirement and will continue in her role as Minister of Adult Education, working 25 hours per week through June 30, 2015. Christine will enter into retirement on July 1, 2015. CUMC is certainly blessed to have Christine remain on staff through the first half of 2015. In the meantime, we will soon begin our search for a person to fill the position of Adult Education and Spiritual Formation. This will be a half time position. We will be seeking a qualified person with a experience in leading adult education and spiritual formation ministries, and a Masters in Divinity or similar academic preparation in order to ensure a seamless transition once Christine retires.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH UPDATE December’s Mission in Action day was a Christmas Workshop put on for families living at Bridgewater apartments. It was a great event that offered 10 different stations for children to visit and make gifts for their parents. The stations included cookie decorating, bracelet making, Christmas ornaments, snowman snow-measuring sticks, and the big hit, pictures with Santa (played by our very own Kelly Martin). Parents rested and enjoyed fellowship with each other and our CUMC volunteers while their children happily visited the stations. It was a great event with fantastic volunteers and fun kids but the most important part for me was that we included the families from Bridgewater in the planning process. One mom in particular co-hosted the event. She met with me on numerous occasions, picked out all the crafts, gave great advice on what would work best, and even canvased Bridgewater apartments with flyers to promote the event. It is these relationships that are at the true core of our mission efforts at CUMC. These relationships take us from just offering items to sharing the abundance of Christ’s love with one another. I look forward to the rest of the MIA days this year and continuing the process of building these relationships with our neighbors. I hope that you get a chance to spend some time at one or all of the events! Sincerely, Mary Gladstone-Highland Community Outreach Director

LAY READER REFLECTIONS

The PLAN

Praise God! It is a New Year. Once again. Thank God for the same-ness that anchors us; thank God for new opportunities. Traditionally, it is a time to evaluate, to turn the page and bring newness and light into our lives, for the benefit of ourselves and – oh! – so many others. I have never been motivated to make New Year’s Resolutions – I am moved more by thoughts, nudges and events throughout the year in discerning when and how to adjust my bearing. I do not suggest this method as optimal – it is too easy to slide by and ignore the signs. Living in the present and being aware of the need to shift gears can help us be proactive on a daily basis.

While the when of evaluating our lives is personal, time-wise, the doing of it is pivotal. The practice of continual assessing would be ideal. The setting of a Plan is crucial if we are to be all we can be, all whom God intends. We can let life happen, which, in itself is a plan, or we can make a Plan. As an example of a Plan, our church, after much prayer, assessment and discernment, has decided upon the CUMC Building Expansion Plan. Praise God!

Questions tumble into my consciousness . . . What is your Plan, Brenda? How is that going for you, Brenda? Will you continue on that path or is it time to make some tweaks? Discerning what is of value to keep in my life and of what to let go is a tough cookie. Am I bearing fruit? And, if so, what fruit might that be? What is my purpose? Better yet, what is God’s purpose for me? How best can I use my days in the sun, my time, to fulfill that? Am I serving with excitement and passion? Am I binding wounds? Am I at peace?

The 6th century BC prophet Jeremiah prophesied to Jerusalem in the years preceding the Babylonian take-over, rebuking its people for their idolatry while continuing to pray for them and reminding them of God’s requirement for sincere repentance. They needed to observe, assess their lives and move forward in light of God’s Plan: Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, Ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. Jer.6:16

Jesus stated his Plan for us in Matthew11:29, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” And, so, may we all take heed and find rest for our souls. Brenda DuPree Lay Leader

Watch the Bulletin for detailed information and sign up on the 50 and Over bulletin board in the hallway by the nursery. Contact for questions: Lou and Brenda DuPree, [email protected], 248-625- 5141.

January 16, 2015 Our program will feature a speaker on Identity Theft from the

office of the Michigan Attorney General. The potluck

lunch will be at noon in the Parlor. Bring your jolly self,

friends, a dish to pass and your own place setting.

Let us know if you would like to host!

What is a 30 Hour Famine? January 24-25, our high school youth will be fasting for 30 hours. During this time they will be learning about poverty all around the world. They will also have the opportunity to receive pledges for their fasting. Monies raised will go to Righteous Mission, the High School Senior Mission to Costa Rico, and a world poverty mission. They will begin their fast at home at 8 a.m. Saturday morning. They will come together at church beginning at 2 p.m. and stay to 2 p.m. on Sunday. During that time their will be activities to educate them on poverty, juice for them to drink and time for prayer and reflection. They will share at coffee hour and in worship about their learnings and give you an opportunity to support their famine.

All January & February dates are available for Mission Candles dedications to honor, remember or celebrate an occasion or someone special. Please check in the church office for the Mission Candle book.

Blood Drive: Sunday, January 11th from 8AM to 2PM . To schedule an appointment please call Phyllis Choops @ 248-496-1473 or to www.redcrossblood.org.

MISSIONS Here is a picture demonstrating how Ed Noll gets donated items for PET Project. This is a free load of hardwood (maple & oak) that he got from Michigan Hardwoods in Clinton. It cost us only $175 to pay the truck owner for his gas to deliver the wood. It's mostly 1 1/4 inch lumber, & we need 3/4 inch for the PET vehicles. Ed got it planed free, at Nelson's Planing mill in Lapeer. The planed lumber arrived at Ed's today. Getting free material like this helps us to hold the cost down, so that we can make more vehicles with the money donated by our financial partners. Praise the Lord !!

On Saturday, Jan. 7, we will be carpooling to Ed Noll's workshop near Hadley to fabricate and assemble parts for the PET vehicles. We will meet at the church at 08:15, and be back by about 12:30. You should wear clothing appropriate for the weather, that would not be ruined by a little paint. Bring your favorite work gloves. Please let me know by e-mail or phone if you can help with this activity. Thanks... God Bless.... Dave Kauffman [email protected] cell: 248-425-3132 Website: www.petmieastmi.org
