The weather is getting better and we’re ready for all the concerts and outdoor events that will crowd our calendars (p.7) as the UAE comes back to life, after its quiet summer of hibernation. We can now dig into our closets and take out our blazers (p.32) and sweatshirts (p.36) in preparation for some cool weather.

Our adidas Originals fashion shoot (p.24) took us to the skate park at Tashkeel. Their awesome brand ambassadors made skating look so easy that I decided to have a try. I strapped a Go Pro camera (p.43) onto my head, and the rest was history. I will choose to keep my experience to myself, but let’s just say that I am very thankful to be alive (p.56).

Skateboarding wasn’t the only thing to give us chills when compiling this issue. The Illusionist’s incredible show (p22) was magical, but slightly unnerving, and the films we reviewed (p.48) are not for the faint of heart. With Halloween creeping up on us, there will definitely be more chills to come.

Tell us what you think! Shahmir KhanI had a great two weeks here at one8one this summer – I got the chance to work with some amazing people and write tons of really cool articles. It was awesome watching a scary movie almost every afternoon for the

Chills issue and listening to music blasting from the sound system. It was a great chance to be independent and to work proactively in a really

creative and exciting workplace. I had an amazing experience and I’ll never forget it, thanks one8one!

Emma DouradoInteresting, fun, challenging.

If I was asked to describe my three weeks of interning at one8one, these are the three words I’d pick. Never having interned before I was not sure

what to expect, but what I discovered was truly invigorating. This is no ordinary internship, the magazine truly works toward the words “youth for youth”. There aren’t any rigid rules and you’re not told what to do; it

is no routine desk job; you are given the creative freedom to write about anything and everything, whatever is most close to your heart.

Interning for one8one has truly allowed me to challenge myself and bring out the writer in me that I tend to bury and it has helped me come one step

closer to discovering myself. The friends I’ve made and the experience I’ve had have been the best, and is truly something I won’t forget. The

magazine is a great platform for all the creative people out there and it’s something I would recommend to anyone interested. Thank you one8one

for a great experience!

Rishya SureshPersonally, I had a great time interning at one8one because it was an

amazing experience and I learned a lot from these two weeks. I also made friends and I enjoyed the atmosphere in the office as it was always

buzzing with excitement and enthusiasm. In my time here, I realised how eager and willing I was to write my own, or even critique someone else’s

article, and everything submitted was an entertaining and gratifying read with a lot to offer. Also, I appreciated this internship greatly because of the

freedom of choice I had here to write about whatever I wanted, whether it be horror movie reviews or an article about a particular event; I could

write however I wanted, and from any angle or perspective. To conclude, I had an enjoyable time in these two weeks, interning at the magazine, and

I can safely say that this has been the highlight of my summer.

UAE Precor on the lookout for talented players Expatriate football team, “UAE Precor” will be starting its open tryout sessions in an

effort to unearth more talented players to join the team. UAE Precor made history in 2010 when they became the first ever under-16 team to play in the Dubai Adult

Football League.

The team recently returned from the DANA Youth Football World Cup in Denmark, securing themselves a place in the quarter finals of the Cup, which is an

unprecedented achievement for a team from the Middle East, where they competed on an international level with players from around the world. The UAE Precor team

consists of 60 footballers representing at least 18 different countries. Teenagers between the ages of 14-18 can participate in the tryouts.

Wollongong: setting the standards in higher educationAcademics from the University of Wollongong in Dubai have taken part in an intensive week-long University Learning and Teaching programme, as part of the institution’s ongoing commitment to deliver teaching excellence and encourage best practices in teaching, learning and assessment across all of its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

UOWD’s Centre for Academic Staff Professional Development (CASPD) organised the programme, which brought together cross-faculty representatives to share their experiences and expertise, and to discuss and explore a variety of ideas and approaches to teaching practise through reflection, collegiality and scholarship, with the aim to enhance the UOWD student learning experience.

CASPD is a unique initiative that underlines UOWD’s commitment to be recognised as an outstanding teaching university. UOWD is the only institution of its kind in the region that has a dedicated centre and bespoke ULT curriculum for the ongoing professional development of its teaching staff.

This year’s intensive programme saw sessions on various key topics such as Active Learning, Assessments, Outcome-centred Learning and Educational Philosophy, each facilitated by practitioners in the respective fields. Participants also benefited from the expertise of Dr Peter McLean, a senior Academic from the University of Wollongong in Australia, who has previously led and facilitated several key initiatives and programmes related to teaching and learning in higher education. The week concluded with practical teaching sessions, where delegates applied the peer observation and mentoring process to reflect on specific teaching and learning techniques in a cooperative learning environment.

One voice, one stand against drug abuse

The American University in the Emirates organised recently an awareness workshop in collaboration with

Dubai Police Department of Security Awareness, where members of Dubai Police, US Embassy, and a team

of drugs enforcement administration visited AUE to familiarise students and the audience on the harmful

effects of drugs, and the possible risks associated with drug abuse, to entire members of the community. Apart from the causes and symptoms the experts also

discussed the prevention and treatment to be resorted to in cases of addiction.

This half day forum organised by the AUE Guidance and Counseling Centre on Drug Abuse and Misbehavior

Awareness Campaign, themed “One Voice, One Stand against Drug Abuse”, was to create awareness on the drug abuse and behavioral problems in Dubai and its

negative impact on the community.

H.E. Dr Maitha AlShamsi, President of Zayed University, highlights the University’s strategy for the new academic yearIn her keynote address on the occasion of the University’s 16th convocation, and in the presence of H.E. Prof Abdalla AlAmiri, ZU Provost along with faculty and staff, H.E. Dr Maitha AlShamsi, Minister of State and President of Zayed University praised the tremendous progress the university has made since its founding in 1998. H.E. Dr Al Shamsi pointed out the tremendous achievements the university has made in terms of academic recognition, services provided, and contributions to disseminate knowledge and education, in its short life span.

Her Excellency added: “Achieving our aspirations, however, whether on a personal or an institutional level, may never be realised if we do not commit ourselves to hard work and excellence as the only means to maintain a distinguished position in a world that does not welcome those who are not willing to constantly evolve. Hence, maintaining our current position is the threshold to greater achievements and excellence”.

The President emphasised that the university has been dedicated to meeting a set of expectations that keep pace with international standards as it builds an international reputation, achieves distinguished levels of academic and administrative quality, and ensures excellent education for its graduates.

“We hereby offer our assurance-H.E. added- that the University will continue its path of success, to strengthen its benchmark of distinction and excellence”.

“It is imperative that our prime objective as a public university is to ensure high levels of education and preparation for our students, as they are our prime investment”.

Volunteaching12With the steadily growing appeal of humanitarian

travel, choosing the right organisation can be an overwhelming task. We caught up with Dustin

Watchman, founder of the charity Volunteaching, to learn more about their cause and how they differ from

other volunteer programmes.

What should new members expect from the programme? The main thing to keep in mind is, “do as the locals do.” For example, you may bathe with a small bucket and cold water – this can honestly be quite refreshing! Also, be prepared for miscommunications and confusion, but just go with the flow and all will be fine!

Has humanitarianism always been part of your raison d’être?Growing up I learned to build interdependent relationships with others so that you both benefit without losing your individuality, and I began to build relationships that would help make the world a better place. I want to teach people to be independent yet work with others on an equal level.

You run a unique volunteering programme called Volunteaching. Could you tell me a little bit about it?

Volunteaching offers an incredible volunteering experience at very little cost. The schools are in Isan, the poor northeastern region of Thailand, giving volunteers

an authentic, life-changing experience helping the locals while living with a host family. In 2008 I set up the

programme and an ongoing scholarship. The main cause is to help students gain a better education and offer an

enjoyable volunteering opportunity, like I had myself.

What inspired you to create Volunteaching? When trying to organize my own volunteering experience

I came to the harsh realization that many organizations charge excessive prices. I found a charity within my

budget, but learned that my host family in Thailand was not compensated for taking me in, housing and feeding

me. I knew there must be a way to volunteer at a fraction of the cost, and make sure everyone is

compensated fairly!

Can anyone join Volunteaching?Yes, anyone can take part, whether you want a break

from work or to take a gap year. Submersing yourself in local culture and tradition is much more rewarding than

staying in the tourist areas and teaching is one of the best ways to give back to the community.

What are your primary objectives for those involved, and what can they expect to gain from the experience?

Simply to get strangers to meet, and realize that as humans we have far more similarities than differences.

Volunteers gain immeasurable life experience, and host families and students gain a wealth of knowledge.

The entire experience will mean learning from each other about language, culture and giving. A win-win for

everyone involved!

How significant has Volunteaching been in making changes in communities?

I think that can be best summed up by my last trip to deliver the scholarships: we attended a teacher’s conference and in the evening a small group of Thai

teachers sat with us. They were self taught and wanted to gain more and more knowledge about how to best

teach English to their students, asking us every question they could. They truly cared about giving their students

the best education possible.

What has been the overall reaction to Volunteaching, and how has the program grown?

I have received really positive feedback about providing a low cost volunteering option. Social media has also

helped the program to grow and I plan on expanding to other countries like the Philippines or Pakistan.

Gaming14David Cage exlusive at Games13What was the biggest challenge in creating BEYOND: Two Souls? The game was full of challenges, it was three-four times bigger than Heavy Rain! We used a brand new 3D engine and wanted to improve the graphics. Plus, we also started working with a piece of technology called “performance capture” which recreates the performance of an actor and translates it into the game. This was also used by David Cameron in the making of Avatar. Also, we tried to innovate the level of interactivity in the gameplay, which was an interesting task. The video game industry is definitely male-dominated and oriented, so video game with a female protagonist differentiates the game significantly from others in the market. Why did you choose a female for your central character?I get asked a lot whether having a female protagonist will be a big issue, people are concerned it won’t sell because of this. My response is always “Yeah! Why not?”. I think she’s awesome, she’s emotional, vulnerable and brave. The game has a great mix of epic sequences and times when the focus is more on her and how she’s feeling. I really did enjoy writing the female character. I did that for the first time with Kara. As long as the story is interesting and the characters are compelling- then it could totally have a female protagonist. Could you explain a bit about what a dual mode is? And how do mobile come into play in the overall gaming experience of BEYOND: Two Souls? When we talked to fans about Heavy Rain, they all told that even though only one person could have the controls, they would sit and share the experience with their friends, and even parents or grandparents! So, because BEYOND has two characters we thought we could add a two-player mode, but many people don’t like DualShock controllers, so we thought, what device allows anyone to interact with the game in a simple way? We thought smart phones were the best choice and developed the free app: BEYOND: touch, (available for iOS and Android). It allows you to use your phone or your tablet, instead of PS3 controllers, connecting via Wi-Fi, plus it has a very simple interface.

How do you connect with the game on a personal level? When you write, you generally write as yourself. I discovered I enjoyed writing for games when it involved my own experiences- rather than having weird powers or being supernatural. Heavy Rain was about my experiences being a young father to my son- and BEYOND is more about the experiences I had dealing with the loss of someone very close to me. I tried to translate my sad experience into something positive, so I focused on how I grew emotionally after the tragedy and used that in the game.

‘BEYOND: Two Souls’- created by Quantic Dream CEO, David Cage- is the

well-anticipated, interactive, action-packed video game for the PS 3. Audiences already

have their expectations pushed into high gear. However, the world will only find out

whether the game will deliver on its promises for a fully fledged, adventure-filled gaming

experience on the 8 October 2013.

Puppeteer (PS 3)Puppeteer takes us on the journey of a young boy named Kutaro, who is taken by the Moon Bear King and turned into a puppet to guard his castle. Upon aggravating the King, his head is ripped off and eaten; while his body is thrown away. The boy sets out to find his head, and eventually his way home, with the help of a pair of special scissors named Calibrus that are used as his main weapon, and can cut through anything made of paper and fabric. Kutaro is able to find switchable heads throughout the game, each with its own special ability. A ghostly cat named Ying Yang helps you along the way by inspecting objects and helps finding new heads.

Pokémon X and Y(Nintendo 3DS)

It is the first instalment of the sixth series of Pokémon games. What sets it apart from all the other series is

that it is the first handheld main series game to be completely rendered in polygonal 3D graphics, allowing for more interactive gameplay and more action-packed

battle scenes. The storyline is basically the same as the other games with a few added new features to the

gameplay. One of them is the ability to customise their characters appearance.

Batman: Arkham Origins(PC, PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360)Batman: Arkham Origins is set five years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. It introduces us to a younger, less refined Batman as he faces off against villains and assassins before they became Gotham City’s most dangerous. It shows Batman through moments that define him and those that eventually make him the Dark Knight we now know.

The game is played in a third person perspective that focuses on Batman’s stealth and combat abilities as well as gadgets. The game is the first to have the multiplayer option.

“photography is not a final destination but a tool that helps me express my thoughts and feelings ”

How did you make it into the music industry?I was really keen on music ever since I was a little kid, so getting into the music industry wasn’t such a bad idea. After entering a few DJ competitions I got to meet DJ Bliss who’s mentored me and put me under his wing.

How do you decide on your music playlist for your gigs?True DJs never decide on the playlist unless it’s been mentioned before hand, it mostly depends on the crowd and the energy at any given time - it’s the DJ’s job to judge.

What are your thoughts on the Dubai music scene?Dubai’s music scene is finally being recognised internationally compared to a few years ago, whether it’s local talent collaborating with an international artist, or just the fact that the music of local talent has been played on US TV shows - it’s growing and everybody’s slowly jumping on now.

Also, the fact that this year alone we had artists like Juliana Down & Hamdan Al Abri nominated for the MTV EMAs is a huge deal.

You are emerging as the most style savvy DJ in Dubai. You run a street style blog called “Coded Chronicles”, and you’re the DJ of choice for local boutiques like “S*uce” and “West LA”. What do you think of the rising synergy between both the music and fashion world?Music and fashion have always been connected in many ways, from the way people choose to dress to the way certain fashions have come and dissolved. Back in the day Run DMC had bucket hats, laceless shoes and gold chains, nowadays it’s more of Kanye West, A$AP Rocky street goth style that’s been popular.

You’re very adept at using the social media. You have several accounts from different social media networks- ranging from a YouTube vlog (“MrShefCodesTV”) to a SoundCloud account (“MrShefCodes”). How important is social networking for anyone who wants to make it in the music industry?Everyone has to keep in mind that there are many DJs around the world and social media is like their portfolio. Nowadays, getting booked could be hard if you aren’t active on social media, unless you already have some sort of relationship with the clubs or promoters.

Congratulations on being shortlisted in the “Ahlan! Awards” for ‘Best Club DJ’. With your growing list of accomplishments what other exciting ventures can we expect to see you pursuing in the near future?Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone for voting for me. Also, the next couple of months will be dedicated to the mixtape project I am currently working on, and I’m also jotting down ideas for my own clothing brand, so busy times ahead!

I understand you have quite a fetish for both shoes and shirts. So I have to ask- shoes or shirts… Which one do you love more? That’s easy, shoes - I have a weakness for sneakers!

Were you naughty, or nice as a teen?I wasn’t naughty at all, I was the quietest dude you would have ever met.

What is your favourite snack food?Green mangoes with chilli powder and salt - super popular in Sri Lanka.

Growing up in Sri Lanka, Shefan Lantra always had a keen interest in listening to

and mixing music. He now spends his time working nights as a professional Dubai-

based DJ. Known by his alias, Mr Shef Codes, he spends night-after-night pumping out

eclectic hip hop- reviving entire crowds of people who have had enough of their

day jobs!

We spoke to him to find out what it’s like to make it as a successful DJ- and

entrepreneur- in the UAE…

English band Alt-J’s debut album An Awesome Wave is one to be remembered. This incredible

indie-rock band has flawlessly synthesized rock and experimentalism by drawing on a variety of different

genres with bizarre lyrics from start to finish. The synths are full of obsessive love and heartbreak in

‘Breezeblocks’, the melody of ‘Something Good’ is addictive, and the calm surf guitar that explodes into

an oriental beat in ‘Taro’ makes it obvious why this album took five years to produce. The unique range of genre influences makes this album irresistible to any

music enthusiast.

Album Reviews20

Instead of kicking and buckling around like the title suggests, Kings of Leon’s sixth album rolls by on autopilot. Caleb Followill bellows about being left alone by yet another girl; it’s a mature step forward, and hints at great things to come- but they never eventuate. Aside from the well-timed hooks and subtle coos in some of their tunes like ‘Temple’, and the slow-building frenzy of ‘Tonight’- few songs sound like they want to reverberate around a 20,000-seat venue. Tracks like the meandering ‘Beautiful War’ and the contemplative ‘Wait For Me’ would be more comfortable strummed around a campfire. Overall, the album suffers from sameness and safety- and lacks the ruggedness and the rockabilly that the band has mastered through their career.

What is Teens Talk? Teens Talk Middle East is the ONLY talk show for the youth. Teens Talk Middle East is an online TV show, in which teens

from all around the UAE have the opportunity to discuss, relate to and receive advice about common and popular

topics amongst teenagers, without sharing identities. The anonymity of the whole scenario creates a safe yet fun

environment for hosts as well as viewers. For the first time in years, the youth have a voice to project their thoughts

and ideas on today’s frequent issues in the life of a typical teenager. Whether its family problems at home, or the usual

drama with friends and teachers at school, Teens Talk Middle East is the talk show where these problems and dilemmas

are not ignored, but acknowledged.

Who is it created for? Teens talk was created to empower and assist teenagers (13-17) and parents alike. It has become apparent that teenagers within the region have become discouraged from sharing their thoughts and ideas, almost as though the youth of the UAE “don’t have a voice”. Although the majority of teenagers and parents have friends and peers they can turn to, it is sometimes hard to reach out to the ones we love in order to ask for help or advice. This is where Teens Talk becomes a great tool for teenagers and parents of the UAE.

When the curtains went up to reveal The Illusionists there was a buzz of excitement in the air. As the world’s biggest selling magic show expectations were high, but it quickly became clear that they would not disappoint. Living up to the hype on every count, their performance was captivating and deceptive with a perfect blend of smart, savvy and stylish entertainment. Mysteriously named, the Anti-Conjuror, the Enchantress, the Gentleman, the Inventor, the Mentalist, the Trickster and the Band conducted their extraordinary, daring and even comical performances to a captivated audience.

A mixture of old favourites, like the ‘three tropes’ trick and the ‘levitating woman’ were suitably spiced up with vibrant, colourful and contemporary costumes and sets, leaving the audience spell-bound and at the very edge of their seats. Watching a timer count down during the Escapologist’s version of Houdini’s ‘Chinese Water Torture Cell’ was particularly nail-biting, whilst a twist on the age old act of sawing a woman in half was both creepy and mind-boggling (we don’t want to give too much away but it involved decapitated limbs moving around the stage). If this was not strange enough, the Band appeared to have the incredible ability to teleport themselves across the auditorium in a matter of seconds.

As the night drew to a close with an elegant and simple act by ‘The Inventor’, who encompassed the audience in a paper snow storm produced from a napkin, it was clear that nobody wanted the night to end. The performers left us more than a little confused, but equally amazed and enchanted at their mind-bending performance, and in no doubts about their leading status in the world of magic and illusion.

Trends die. That zebra print shirt you’ve been rocking for thepast month may one day be an endangered species. Style,

however, is a constant. True, original style takes years to craftand hone. It can completely reinvent itself and still remain

classic. It can simultaneously touch on the past and reach forthe future. It cannot be replicated.

The adidas fall/winter 13 collection was not just made inone season; it has been developed over the past 65 years,

from when the brand first tumbled forth into this world. Itseeks to preserve decades of style while embracing the new.

Contemporary running shoes are juxtaposed with a basketballrange inspired by the colour schemes of sports teams andicons from the 90s who shaped the streets back in the day.

The men’s collection sees an aggressive twist on the preppy look, with chinos being paired with jackets, graphic shirts and hoodies.

The adidas Skateboarding range, inspired and designed by street skateboarding legend, Mark Gonzalez, takes its cue from comfort

and style – essential to any street skateboarder. With prints created by the Gonz himself adorning the oversized tees and

artfully detailed on the footwear, the FW13 adidas Skateboarding range is now available at adidas Originals stores in the UAE.

Skate Biladi and Tashkeel

When art and skateboarding collided at the Tashkeel Gallery in Nad Al Sheba, the Middle East’s first skateable art structure was born. The rad kids at Skate Biladi push their limits on the calligraphy ramp as well as their newly created ‘Canopi Bowl’

while merging the worlds of skateboarding and art in a way that has never been done in the Middle East.

Armed with their boards, a fearless attitude and gear inspired by the Gonz, Silas and Busenitz, Skate Biladi is 100% original.

adidas Skateboarding footwear is designed by Mark Gonzalez.

adidas Originals apparel is available at: adidas Originals stores in Dubai Mall, Mirdiff City Center and adidas brand stores across the UAE.

This month, we were invited to sample a portion of heaven, and we mean literally. Deborah Mitchell’s unique skincare line lives up

to its celestial name, jarring up divine portions of bee venom as a natural solution to controversial treatments. ‘This is a natural

form of Botox,’ Mitchell told us, ‘it’s applied on the skin, it’s organic and it’s using bee venom. So the bee venom relaxes the skin

tissues; relaxes all the lines, making you look younger, and making your lips look fuller.’

We love their essential moisturizer which can be applied daily and prevents signs of ageing by working to smooth away lines

and reduce common problems like puffiness around the eyes. If this is not enough to have you rushing out for a pot, it also works wonders for spots and blemishes by helping to restore a healthy

balance to the ph of your skin.

Used by the likes of Kate Middleton, Gwyneth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham, but with trial and travel sizes available, heaven

products are an affordable, reliable luxury. If you want to feel particularly pampered before a special occasion, drop into The Nail Spa for an, ironically named but nonetheless blissful, bee-

sting facial. The fifty minute treatment includes the application of a bee venom mask to boost blood flow to the face, and manuka

honey to soothe and heal the skin. You’ll leave feel refreshed, rejuvenated and positively glowing.

The electronic music duo Hollaphonic is an energetic explosion of creativity created by the

meeting of Greg Stainer’s DJ skills, and Olly Wood’s lyrical and vocal input. Both Stainer

and Wood have reached the highlights of their careers separately. Greg’s achievements range

from two Gold Discs to being one of the most prominent DJs in town. While Olly’s MC’ing has

landed him gigs alongside Busta Rhymes, Ne-yo and Coldplay.

Combining their efforts to create Hollaphonic, their first jamming session was just a couple of hours before resulting in their first single

‘I Don’t Want It To End’ which toppled Psy’s “Gangnam Style” to take the number one

iTunes spot in Dubai.

Sponsored by adidas, Red Bull, Beats by Dre and HTC, and with a new album release at the end of this year, Hollaphonic talks to one8one

about what inspires them, the difficulties of performing electronic music live, and how they

landed their record deal with EMI Arabia.

How did you form Hollaphonic? Greg: We’ve both been doing music in our own separate fields for some time, and had heard of each other but never got around to collaborating, so a mutual friend of ours, Smokinggroove, who’s another adidas sponsored DJ, introduced us just a little over a year ago. We immediately jumped into the studio and created our first single ever ‘I Don’t Want It To End’.

Where did you meet?Olly: We met here in Dubai, Hollaphonic is officially Dubai born. It’s not yet recognised by some people and certain award committees as being from the Middle East because we’re both from the UK, but I don’t think that should matter, because Hollaphonic was born here and it’s where our music is made and where the energy is.

How did you come up with the name?Olly: In complete honesty, we took ages and ages coming up with the name. We had “Ratman and Bobin” as one of the options, but then Greg couldn’t live with the fact that his 2 year old daughter would eventually go to school, and would have to say that her dad is either Ratman or Bobin.

So the name ‘Hollaphonic’ came to us when we met with some people from “Beats by Dr Dre”, who are also sponsoring us. We were looking at how headphones are made and were told about holophonics, a recording system which creates a sound that kind of wraps around you, very similar to stereophonic sound. Within our music, you can also hear the sound pan around you, but “holophonic” was no longer available on twitter so we played around with the name and came up with Hollaphonic.

Hollaphonic

Page 43: Chills Issue

39

Greg: And the funny thing is, when I used to google Hollaphonic to see if anything has been written about us, google would ask “Did you mean Holophonic?” and now it doesn’t do that anymore.

What is your favorite sort of music? And who or what inspires you?Greg: I come from a house music background, I also used to be involved in the UK garage scene but I find myself constantly changing my preferences in music.

The thing with dance music is, it changes so quickly and is constantly evolving so you have to keep up with it. For example, Hollaphonic originally started trying to create a sound called “complextro” which is progressive electronic music, but even that is so 2012, so we’re working on something else now, and I like being able to experiment with different types of music as we go.

Dance music in general inspires me, its flexibility and openness are very demanding.

Olly: I mostly listen to big bass music, but I like all sorts of music to be fair and I think that reflects on what we do; we have orchestral parts in some of our tracks, we also play around with dubstep, deep house music, and a vast array of musical genres.

What inspires me generally, is people who are positive about what they’re doing and believe in it.

What inspires me musically, is anybody who takes a risk and puts a new sound out or tries something new.

Page 44: Chills Issue

How would you describe your music?Greg: The main concept of Hollaphonic is to make music that could go on the radio or on TV, so basically, pop music that is cool enough

to play on our DJ sets. However, the beauty of being an electronic music duo is that we don’t have to play the pop version of our track,

we can always play different remixes.

Olly: We play our remixes according to who our audience is, what they want to hear and what the setting is like. We can drop a big hard

track, a bass line track, or a slowed down deep house track. It all comes down to how you build up and compile the different

elements in your music, and we’re compiling it so that a wider range of people can listen to it. I genuinely believe that music is very subjective, but when more people embrace it, that’s music evolving.

Greg: It still has to be something we like, at the end of the day, so we’re not making our music just because we want to make loads of

money, we’re doing it because we want loads of people to hear what we’ve created.

Can you talk me through your music making process?Olly: When we first went into the studio, I knew what I was doing

musically and lyrically, but I wasn’t very confident with the technical stuff, whereas Greg is very technical but hasn’t really written

anything for vocals.

Greg: Mostly one word tracks.

Olly: We both knew how a song works in terms of how it should be framed, but it was a learning process for the both of us to collaborate

and bounce ideas off each other. The key thing is to keep working, when we started recording we used to work for two hours on making

5 seconds of music, but now we just keep going, throwing in more ideas and sounds until the foundation is laid out, then we come back

to it and fix it.

Greg: We usually begin with the drums and chord progression then we start thinking of themes and ideas. I look around for some crazy

sounds, then we trade places, I take a look Olly’s lyrics and Olly looks for more crazy sounds. I try to include my daughter in the music

making process as well, I don’t mean to push or anything but she’s halfway though her Logic X course and she’s only two.

As a matter of fact; Jay Z claims his daughter Blue Ivy is the youngest

person ever to be credited in a music track, he used the sound of his daughter crying in his track ‘Glory’ when she was only 2 days old, but I actually sampled a recording of the first ultrasound scan of my baby

daughter Keira’s heartbeat and used it in a track I worked on called ‘Bring Joy Back’.

Where do you guys usually perform?Olly: The shower...

Greg: Our first ever live performance was actually the Dubai World Cup opening for Seal in front of 40 thousand people.

Olly: We also performed our first headline gig recently in White Beirut, we played the ‘Podium Lounge Mix’ and got very good reviews

for it.

We’re gonna put our third single out at the end of this month, a single out at the end of November and put the album out at the end of

December, and follow that with a series of performances.

What are the difficulties of performing electronic music live?Olly: We never really rehearsed together for the Dubai World Cup

event, when the sound engineers asked if we wanted to do a

soundcheck, I simply asked if someone could tap the microphone and make sure it’s working.

Greg: But the Dubai World Cup show was just a DJ set and a live PA system, so it was difficult for us to hear each other at times. We’re getting more stuff though, Casio is giving us some musical equipment, keyboards and synths to incorporate in our live shows.Later on, with the orchestral parts in our music, it would be great to get some live strings as well.

Do you have any pre-performance rituals?Greg: We tried to get some cupcakes with “Hollaphonic” spelled out on each cupcake, but that didn’t work out for some reason.

Olly: But really it’s the after gig ritual that you have to worry about.

Being the first electronic music duo in the Middle East to sign to EMI Arabia must be very exciting, how did it come about?Olly: I took two singles and Greg along with me to EMI and said “Listen to this! It’s awesome!” and I think they saw potential in our music, as well as assessed its commercial value.

Greg: It’s very important to go to major record companies with not only good music, but good music and a plan. With us it was like, this is what we have

Page 45: Chills Issue

writing by ghadeer abeidohphotos by slava noor

done already and this is what we could potentially achieve in the middle east and here’s our music.

Olly: Ultimately, the less that you have to invest into a product that’s already successful, the better.

Greg: And we already had tracks out with Hed Kandi and big labels in the UK, we also already had our followers and youtube hits, so the record deal with EMI was

just taking it to the next level.

Olly: A record company is basically a professional support unit that provides marketing, space and advice, and they will invest in you to get a bigger return

effectively. We simply needed to pay attention to the way we are perceived, and the thing with us is that we’ve never been unpleasant or negative.

Greg: Except for when the cupcake thing didn’t work out.

Olly: We both knew how to take care of our marketing, Greg was the head of programming for a club and I was working in the event marketing space.

Still, for us the music was first.

Congratulations on your iTunes hit. What’s next?Greg: More music. We’ve already finished our album and the amount of tracks we need to have, it’s just a matter of getting the next single out now. And we’ve been booked for a few events for the last part of 2013 that we’re really looking forward to. It’s such a nice feeling that the first two singles have been received so well and

we’re like “this is cool man, people actually like us” it’s not just us and our moms. It’s amazing when new people and strangers come to you and tell you that they

genuinely liked your tracks. Just more of that, and more big tunes that people could sing back to us.

Abeer Abeidoh is an incredibly talented illustrator and an artist all-around. She was offered a brand new HP EliteBook laptop by HP and here are her thoughts on experience as well as some works she created using the machine.

Gizmos &Gadgets38

by Abeer Abeidoh

The first impression I got when introduced to the EliteBook workstation is “Ha…that looks practical!” It weighs about 2.8 kilos, has an aluminium body,

and I had a slight urge to try and stand or walk on it. Later, I found out that the workstation had been endurance tested for pressure, temperature, humidity, vibration and shock, explaining the overall appearance. It’s a bit heavier than

what I’m used to carrying, but as a workstation it’s considered one of the lightest ones out there. It certainly is a very powerful machine; with almost

the highest specs any laptop could have, but what makes it special is the Quadro 2000m graphics card which was built and designed to fit the work of designers and developers of all kinds. The display is also praise worthy. The

color accurate, 15.6 inch screen has a resolution 1920 x 1080.

The matte finish is feels elegant and the keyboard is spill resistant and comfortable. The tracking pad is made up of six buttons which are

programmable, and can be assigned to different tasks. I find that thoughtful, since it was mandatory for me to use a tablet or USB mouse with my old

laptop, in order to be fully in control while working on a 3D software. This also means it renders graphic works extremely quickly.

Samsung Glaxy S4 ZoomAt first glance, it wouldn’t be a surprise to mistake the Samsung Zoom for a camera. It looks like a point and shoot camera, has a massive screen at the back and carries similar features to those found on other Samsung-infused Android devices. The Zoom took some time getting used to, as it was the first time I had used a TouchWiz phone, but it was fun to explore. The touch screen 4.3 ” was easy to navigate, but the grip at the side made it difficult to carry. The phone has a good battery life, which is essential for taking photos. The touch screen can get a little sluggish at times and the Super AMOLED technology used leaves one wishing for more. 8GB built-in storage is clearly not enough for those who store everything on their phone, but the Zoom comes with a micro SD slot making the memory expandable up to 64GB.

The 10xOptical zoom, 16MP lens and Xenon Flash will enable many individuals to capture an image at its best. You can use modes like ‘Firework’ and ‘Kids Shots’ which is supposed to help immensely with taking photos of kids, as the phone plays a sound to attract a baby. One can safely say this Android device is not short of options. Zoom captures fairly-good detail in pictures and is handy as a point and shoot device.

All in all, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is a versatile phone that helps any passionate photographer showcase their talent on the go, however, it could definitely stand to lose some of it’s bulk.

GoPro Hero 3GoPro records video at up to 4k resolution. At the resolutions you’d most likely use the video quality is superb. Full HD video can be recorded at 60 frames per second, allowing for really amazing slow motion effects post shooting. The camera is available in many variants, the most popular being the Black, Silver and White editions (with resolution depreciating respectively).

Its biggest strength is definitely the myriad of accessories available, keeping your camera safe in even the harshest of elements, however, most of the accessories are not bundled with the camera and costs could really add up, depending on your needs.

The camera can also be paired, via WiFi, with either an iOS or Android device; turning your device into a remote cum viewfinder for the camera, making it easier to change settings and view recorded content, should you eventually manage to get it connected that is. This being said, the GoPro is still an excellent investment for anyone who would want to capture their active lifestyle on film.

Truly one of the most versatile camera’s I’ve ever used; the GoPro Hero 3 adapts to any situation and

its small size makes seemingly impossible camera angles possible.

Mount it to anything, anywhere; grab a remote and snap away. It

really is that easy.

The Prodigal Daughter Author: Jeffrey Archer

What is most touching about this novel is the wholeness of the main character Florentyna Rosnovski. The bildungsroman aspect of the novel truly allows one to understand Florentyna, and identify with her trials and tribulations. At the age of 10 we see her distress as her favorite teddy bear is mutilated with blue ink, and in her twenties we see her qualms as she is excommunicated from her family for marrying Richard Kane, the man she loves. As the novel progresses, Archer successfully entwines all the aspects of our lives into one novel; be it cultural identity or professional success. The Prodigal Daughter gives us insight into who we truly are as human beings, using a woman who becomes president of the United States as his muse. A touching and inspiring novel for readers of any genre; indeed, the main message in the book is that in our own way, we too can be like the Prodigal Daughter.

Rhea“that’s the good thing about

art, you get to alter reality”

Page 51: Chills Issue

Rhea has been sketching ever since she could remember. She knew she had the knack for it, so she took it on as her own special endeavor. It began with pencil work but, after getting used to it, one of her teachers started directing her out of her comfort zone and into experimenting with new media. Rhea began using watercolours and acrylics, but still tries to incorporate pens, oils and mixed media, seeing each type of media as speaking for itself. Watercolour is all about transparency; it is exposed, sad and “so fluid just like tears”. Acrylic, she explains, is more flexibile: “you can use it for a lot of things, the colors are more saturated but they dry quickly”, while the everlasting heavy oils “let your thoughts flow at ease”.

She is currently majoring in Visual Communication and Graphic Design, and wants to find ways of conveying art to people in a beautiful and beneficial way, without the traditional losing out to the digital. She draws inspiration from favourite artists: Gustav Klimt, Charmaine Olivia, Mr Frivolous, Minjae Lee and Agnes Cecile, as well as music, which she says is her biggest inspiration. Rhea uses symbolism to portray women from different cultural backgrounds, aiming to emphasise either their beauty or the controversial nature of their reality, giving her a strong connection with her work.

She often favours subject over the execution of her paintings, but says: “I rarely feel satisfied with my work”, and continues to draw daily, setting marks and deadlines for herself; sharpening her skills with observation. “The more you [observe], the easier it is to get imaginative” she explains, “and that’s the good thing about art, you get to alter reality”

If you’re looking for a fun night watching a typical

horror flick, give Nightmare on Elm Street a shot. Packed full of jump scares and a not

too complicated plot, it’s perfect to watch with some

friends and have some fun.

The Ring is definitely an intense horror with a lot of substance – it’s a film that will give you a good

scare while also having an element of mystery and a

pretty good plot. Careful though, if you scare easy,

you might be sleeping with one eye open.

Nightmare on Elm StreetNightmare on Elm Street is an American Horror film by director Samuel Bayer. The plot revolves around a group of teenagers who are having similar nightmares in which a badly charred man wearing a knife infused glove is seeking to slay them. The horrifying part is that whatever happens to them in their dream happens to them in real life, implying that dying in their dream means dying in reality. Nancy Holbrook (Rooney Mara) and Quentin Smith (Kyle Gallner), watch their friends gruesomely die in their sleep and struggle to stay awake in order to avoid the same fate. While doing so they ascertain dark secrets about their past which reveals the man’s true identity and his motives. The movie offers an enthralling and jaw dropping plot, though it can be fairly predictable at times. Personally, I wouldn’t consider the movie petrifying enough to give someone nightmares, but it undeniably does deliver well-timed jump scares and effective musical cues to keep you transfixed.

The RingThe Ring, directed by Gore Verbinski, is considered to be one of the “scariest movies of all time”. The story centers around a myth which claims that after watching the cursed videotape, the person will die within seven days. Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) is a journalist whose niece is believed to have died due to this mysterious videotape. Curious to uncover the truth, she watches the video tape herself and seeks aid from her ex, Noah (Martin Henderson). On this journey, jaw dropping and spine-tingling secrets are revealed which will definitely haunt you for days to come. Furthermore, the eerie plot is accompanied with sinister sound effects that won’t fail to give you goose bumps.

This one is for people who like films that are slightly

unusual. It’s Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining – considered to

be one of the greatest horror movies of all time – it is also a

very unconventional one – it is sure to scare you and it will

definitely creep you out.

If you’re not into horror, but still want to get into the Halloween spirit, Zombieland is perfect. It’s a fun watch, with plenty of action and quite a few laughs as well, but there’s still a ton of zombies and gore to make it a great Halloween movie – perfect for a fun night in with friends.

“We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven’t you?”

The ShiningFilms by Stanley Kubrick have a reputation for being unusual and unconventional. As a filmmaker, Kubrick is considered to be one of the greatest that ever lived, and his abstract take on the horror genre – The Shining – is considered to be one of the greatest horrors of all time. The film stars Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrence, who moves, with his wife and son, to the isolated Overlook Hotel to watch over it while it closes for the winter. We watch Torrence slowly descend into insanity as he is possessed by an evil presence which resides within the hotel. His son, meanwhile, experiences psychic visions of gruesome murders which took place in the hotel’s past as well as those to come. The film excellently builds up tension towards a truly gripping climax, at the end. It is fascinating and horrifying to watch Nicholson’s performance as he is slowly consumed by madness, coupled with his son’s shocking psychic visions. The film is a different type of horror, one that doesn’t rely on the typical ‘jump-scares’ that are so common in modern films – the horror here is in the plot.

There is also a whole other side to the film – one that is riddled with conspiracy theory. Many speculate that the film’s late director incorporated a plethora of hidden messages and meanings into the film, ranging from things relating to the moon landing to hidden messages for the author of the source material: Stephen King.

Overall, The Shining is a great film, filled with mystery, suspense and horror – definitely worth a watch.

ZombielandZombieland is a film that is made for an audience that just wants to have a good time – and it pulls this off very, very well. It stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and Emma Stone, and is set in a post-apocalyptic America that has been overrun by zombies.

The Plot isn’t overly complicated, Eisenberg’s character, Columbus is looking for a place free of zombies. As he travels across the country, he meets Tallahassee (Harrelson), Wichita (Stone) and Little Rock. They venture together to Los Angeles, in search of safety, encountering zombies along the way. Despite a simplistic plot, the film is still a lot of fun to watch thanks to the cast. They all embody thoroughly entertaining characters that are consistently developed and thoroughly entertaining. That, along with a ton of zombie killing makes the film great.

PsychoAlfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is a film that shocked audiences when it was first released in 1960, and continues to be a perfect example of extraordinary filmmaking 53 years down the road. Hitchcock is a legend, and Psycho is his legacy.

The film stars Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, owner of the isolated Bates Motel, where co-star Janet Leigh who plays Marion Crane, seeks refuge for the night after she’s been on the run for stealing 40,000 dollars from her boss. As soon as Crane checks into the motel, a gripping and shocking plot begins to unfold with an ending you will never expect.

This is an unconventional horror, driven by brilliant acting that invests an audience into the characters’ personalities and stories. Hitchcock expertly builds tension and finds the perfect moment for a release of terror. It contains one of the most famous scenes in film history: ‘the shower scene’ – a scene that the film is renowned for, and you are bound to never forget. Psycho is something definitely worth seeing and experiencing.

Burrrn! For more info on WWE in Abu Dhabi, check out Zayed Sports City website at:

www.zsc.ae

WWE is back in Abu Dhabi and brought along a few of our favourite wrestlers. Names such as: the Miz, the Viper, the Big Show, the Shield (which consists of three members: Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns) and Daniel Bryan will be preforming on the 10th, 11th and 12th of October at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi.

WWE was in Abu Dhabi last year on the 28th of February 2012 and managed to exceed every expectation. Zayed Sports City was sold out on all three nights and grossed their highest ever sales for an event.

WWE brought The Miz to Abu Dhabi in order to give the fans of this fair city an insight of what to expect from this year’s event, as well as give a personal touch to one of WWE’s most popular wrestlers.

The Miz

Page 55: Chills Issue

Exclusive 51How do you feel about people changing your catch phrase from “I’m The Miz and I’m awesome” to “I’m The Miz and I’m awful”?Bullying drives me, hearing people say that - it motivates me. I use negativity and turn it into positivity in the ring. I enjoy the negativity. When someone tells me I’m awful, I’m like okay, I will prove you wrong.

How do you warm up before the ring?Stretching. I do a lot of stretching and play music. I listen to Bullet For My Valentine ‘End of Days’. It gets me motivated and ready for the match.

Who is your biggest rival and why?Right now my biggest rival in the WWE would have to be Triple H because he is our boss and lately he’s been making it very difficult for a lot of people in the WWE.

How did you feel after Randy Orton defeated you in the Smackdown on August 30th??How would you feel? Pretty defeated, yeah! But you know what? I’m the kind of person who figures I gave it my best try, I gave it my all. I think it was pretty good.

You did a lot of sport in High School, why not wrestling? It was just one of those things. I didn’t like the amateur style, I liked the WWE style of wrestling. I also liked basketball and it was during the wrestling season. I did basketball, baseball, cross country running and swimming. There was always some other sport that I was doing which prevented me from doing wrestling.

How did you meet your fiancé Maryse Oullet?I hosted the WWE Diva search, she was a contestant and that is exactly where we met. We didn’t really talk when we were doing the show, but then she got a contract afterwards. A year later we started talking and a year after that we started dating. Now it’s six years later and we are engaged.

What are your plans for after WWE?I always said I would do WWE until it stops being fun, right now it’s a lot of fun. Obviously you can’t do this for the rest of your life. When you’re old and grey, your body just can’t take the pain and torment that is involved with WWE. What do I want to do after? I haven’t thought about it. I could host, become a movie star, I have a radio show I could do.

Any new movies lined up?Yes,‘Christmas Bounty’ will be out on ABC Family and it will be out on DVD during Christmas time. I am pretty proud of the movie; I think it will do well.

You do work for charity don’t you?In WWE we do a ton of charities all the time. We get to work with Wish Foundation where the children come and their one wish is to meet Daniel Bryan or me, you get to put smiles on their faces and it’s just an incredible feeling.

Zoom Blur photographyOne of my favorite photography techniques is the zoom blur effect. It gives an abstract and dynamic edge to the images and has the potential to make a dull

and dreary shot fascinating and captivating. It can also be used to give the image an eerie or ghostly feeling. The basic idea is to zoom in or out at the same time

as pressing the shutter release button. Set your camera to a slow shutter speed, preferably 1 second. One problem is that if you are taking the picture somewhere

outdoors with a lot of bright light, slow shutter speed will overexpose your photographs. In order to avoid this, choose a low ISO such as 100 and set the

aperture to F32; this will reduce the amount of light entering the camera. These are just the basic settings; after some practice you can play around with different

shutter speeds and aperture.

Cultivating gratitude is a way of adopting a healthy orientation to our

lives and experiences. The one who cultivates gratitude can always find

reasons for happiness.

Often people dwell on their reasons to be frustrated or discouraged. While

there is sufficient cause for these emotional responses in the difficulties

we experience from day to day, there are also always reasons for gratitude.

Focusing on the things we should be grateful for is a wonderful way to bring

life and all its challenges into focus.

Give awayGive something away. Even the poorest among us has something that he or she

doesn’t need and can therefore give away. What it is doesn’t matter. The very act of giving makes a person feel richer,

while also building a relationship with another human being.

Give something upGive something up. Like giving

something away, giving something up intentionally – on a temporary basis – is

an effective way to discover all that we have to be thankful for. To step away

from the television, or take off the MP3 player, or to spend a day without soda or

chocolate, provides a new perspective, not only on the particular delight

renounced, but also on the vast array of pleasures we enjoy.

TravelTravel. Whether your trip is 50 miles down the road or hundreds of miles

across the continent, travel is a perennial boon to the person who is

in a rut. Seeing new places and people seems to bring about a realignment of

thoughts and imaginings. Furthermore, the traveller tends to think fondly of the home left behind and the people

there – gratitude springs up, sometimes unexpectedly.

ConsiderConsider the good things that have

happened to you. It’s easy to focus on the sad moments, the defeats, and the

closed doors. Look back on your life and recall all the bright and happy events,

the times of joy and satisfaction. So much about how we feel is based on a selective narrative of our past life. We build gratitude by developing a more

balanced narrative.

Connect with natureSpend time in nature. Nature nourishes, heals, and replenishes. The person with

open eyes and ears never comes away from an experience of the natural world without learning or gaining something.

Even in the inner city there is green space to view or walk through. Doing so

never fails to lift the spirits of the person who is open and receptive.

Q. I’ve been studying abroad for the past one year and I have come to realize that the friends I’ve made

are not the best influence on me. I’m living alone and I feel really lonely so I tend go along with whatever they do just so I fit in; things that are hazardous to

both mine and their life. I worry that if I tell them what they are doing is wrong they will get upset and not be friends with me. How do I get myself out of this friend

circle without hurting their feelings?

Maria strives to empower youth with the tools, skills and beliefs that they are resourceful, powerful and wise!

Thank you for sharing your concern with us because it is a very important discussion that you have raised.

This is something that is experienced by many and sadly, most youth struggle alone, or worse, fall into

isolation which brings on bigger issues.

I want to take your letter and break it down into parts because you have mentioned several points that

overlap but also need focus as well.

Loneliness: it is very normal for you to be feeling lonely because you went from living with family to moving abroad and living alone. There is both the

need to become independent fast and to ‘find your place’ amongst the new environment that you have

found yourself in. No matter how much education you receive in high school or college, nothing can prepare

you for the ‘life experiences’ that you walk through once you start your university life abroad. Allow

yourself some time to normalise this for yourself. You’re not alone. There are many struggling, just like

you. You didn’t mention, so I will recommend that you reach out to someone at university, like a counsellor

or a professor who you feel that you can connect with. Share this feeling of loneliness with them. They

will be able to give you some recommendations for finding your way in this new place. As well, Google

is your friend. Do some searches. What are other international students doing to feel less lonely when

they move abroad? There is never any shame in reaching out for

Page 63: Chills Issue

help. Finding someone just like you is not as hard as you think. Unless you have decided to study on the moon, I am almost certain that there are other expatriate students at your university. Become curious, and reach out to someone at the university who you can trust. What you are feeling is normal, there is nothing to feel alarmed by. We tend to call this, ‘home sickness’. Any-one who has moved away from home can relate to the loneliness that you have described.

Loneliness & friends: there is a big difference between loneliness and being alone. Please clarify these for yourself. You are feeling lonely but you are not alone. Your family may be an airplane ride away, and physically they cannot comfort you, but they are still available for you when you need them. Have you any friends from your hometown that you are still in contact with? Reconnect with them. How are they working through their journey abroad? Once you distinguish the differences between ‘loneliness’ and ‘being alone’, you will start to feel better and you will not feel the pressure to hang out with any kind of friends.

You mentioned that you are doubting the friends that you have made. There are HUGE alarm bells for me with what you have written. ‘Hazardous’ is a big word. Any person that puts our lives in any ‘hazardous’ situations are definitely the wrong kind of friends. You didn’t mention the details, but I sense from what you have written that you are not comfortable.

You asked how you can ‘detach’ without hurting their feelings. Perhaps you can start with not being available to them. For example, you can’t go out because you have to study or your mum is Skyping you. Another approach is to be very honest with them. Tell them that you’re not comfortable doing the things that they are expecting you to do and ask them to respect your wishes. They may or may not be happy but that is their prerogative. Your job is not to worry about their feelings being ‘hurt’, it is to take care of yourself, and a friend who puts you in harm’s way will only judge you because they have their own issues.

Make new connections: join a club at the university; join a gym; discover the new place that you live in; take tourist trips around the city; go out to a movie; do different things that take you out of the house. I always find that loneliness feels awful when we keep ourselves isolated at home. Sometimes just being around people in public helps us to feel less lonely. Finally, step outside your comfort zone and talk to new people. Start with small talk. You are in a class with other students. Speak to them. Invite them for a coffee….a friendship starts with a smile. Remember, if they don’t accept your invitation, it’s not personal; they may just be busy that day. Ask them again another time.
