En un mundo globalizado, mantener la iden-tidad resulta fundamental. La Semana de la Chile-nidad se ha convertido en un espacio que rescatanuestras tradiciones y se ha consolidado como unlugar de encuentro familiar. Una vez al ao, y du-rante varios das, el campo chileno se instala en laciudad con rodeo, msica, danza, artesana y re-presentaciones artsticas que ayudan a consolidarnuestra identidad nacional.

Es as como con el paso del tiempo, estamuestra se ha consolidado con una asistenciapromedio de 500 mil personas y como un polo deatraccin para los extranjeros que quieren cono-cer nuestras races.

In a globalized world, it is fundamental toconserve the identity. The Week of Chilean Iden-tity has become a space which conserves our

traditions and It has become famous as a placefor families to get together. Once a year, and forseveral days, the Chilean countryside comes to thecity with its rodeo, music, dance, handicrafts andartistic performances which help to strengthenour national identity.

That is how, over time, this exhibition has be-come so famous with an average of 500 thousand

people attending and as a pole of attraction for theforeigners interested in learning about our roots.

La Semana de la Chilenidad es un eventoque no nace de la nostalgia, sino de una visinde futuro, basada en conocer y valorar nuestraidentidad nacional. Su idea fundamental no esuna suerte de escenicacin historicista de la

vida tradicional de nuestros campos en el pa-sado, sino una oportunidad de que sus compo-nentes esenciales maniesten su vitalidad en elpresente y, por cierto, se proyecten hacia el fu-turo. Nuestra actividad en torno a esta Semanaes algo eminentemente actual. Tenemos plenaconciencia de que, como personas y como pas,estamos inmersos en un mundo global, y no lolamentamos en absoluto: apreciamos las ven-tajas y participamos enrgicamente en todo loque es propio de nuestro tiempo, atentos a los

indicios que dejan entrever el porvenir. Sin em-bargo, eso no signica abandonar y olvidar todolo pasado. Bien se ha dicho que tradicin no esaferrarse al pasado, sino preservar aquello quel tuvo de valioso, para que perviva en el presen-te y en el futuro. Y eso es lo que hacemos conesta Semana.

As entendidas, estas tradiciones benecian aquien toma contacto con ellas. Comunican arraigo,seguridad, identidad. Nos hablan de nosotros mis-mos, desde un enfoque enriquecedor. Y no como

una curiosidad musearia, sino como algo entera-mente vivo y actual, algo que nos hace vibrar en elpresente. La Semana de la Chilenidad es del aqu ydel ahora. Por eso convocan a las multitudes querenen ao a ao en tantos puntos del pas, y poreso se extienden de comuna en comuna.

Pienso que eso se debe a una necesidad dereequilibrar factores. Nuestra poca y nuestro

The Week of Chilean Identity is an event notborn of nostalgia, but rather a vision of the future,based on understanding and valuing our nationalidentity. Its fundamental idea rather than beingsome kind of historical scene making of the tra-

ditional lifestyle of our countryside in the past, isan opportunity for its essential components tobe seen in all their present vitality and obviouslyto project this into the future. Our activity duringthis Week is something eminently up-to-date. Weare fully aware that, as individuals and as a coun-try, we are involved in a global world, and we donot regret this at all; we appreciate the advan-tages and we participate energetically in every-

thing that is of our times, attentive to the signs,which reveal the future. Nevertheless, this does

not mean abandoning and forgetting the past. Ithas been well-said that tradition is not anchoredin the past, but preserves something which wasof value in it so that it survives into the presentand the future. And that is what we make of thisWeek.

Looked at in this way, these traditions are ofbenet to whomsoever comes into contact withthem. They communicate roots, security and iden-tity. They speak to us of ourselves from an enri-ching angle and not as a museum curiosity but as

something totally alive and up-to-date, somethingwhich makes us feel the intensity of the present.The Week of Chilean Identity is of the here andnow. For this reason the multitudes come together

year after year in so many parts of the country andfrom community to community.

I think that this is due to a need to re-weighfactors. Our times and those of our country are

pas con ella es una poca de urbanizacin.sta trae consigo muchos benecios evidentes,pero el alma de las tradiciones chilenas est liga-da al campo, a sus ritmos y valores, a sus coloresy aromas, a sus sabores y su ambiente. se es uncomplemento, un equilibrio que necesitamos enla vida de ciudad. De all que un grupo de perso-nas nos reuniramos para trabajar en el redescu-brimiento de esas races que se iban escondien-do. El xito de la Semana de la Chilenidad indicaque ella responde a algo necesario.

Ella es una amalgama de aspectos que con-tribuyen a una visin completa de la nacin.Expresa un alma compleja, como lo son todaslas almas. Expresa la permanencia dentro delcambio, y la variedad dentro de esa permanen-cia. Por eso, aunque estas jornadas se dan cita

anual, el repertorio nunca se repite. La continuarenovacin de los elementos que integran estamuestra estimula ao a ao la curiosidad sobrelas novedades de la tradicin. Y es que la vidadel campo es muy rica, no cansa, tiene ameni-dad, armona y variedad. A diferencia de la vidaurbana, vertiginosa y que no se cie a los ritmoshumanos, sino ms bien se impone a ellos, lavida rural apacigua y reconstituye nuestra natu-raleza ms ntima.

Todo esto lo han comprendido bien los pa-

ses ms desarrollados, que cuidan con muchsi-mo esmero todo cuanto representa su identidadnacional, su cultura viviente, sus estilos propios,su alma, hasta convertirlos en el signo incon-fundible que los distingue con rasgos nicos. In-cluso puede decirse que hay una relacin entreel alto grado de avance de esos pases y la va-loracin de lo especcamente propio, por muyabiertos que estn a la globalidad.

Con la Semana de la Chilenidad, nuestro

pas sigue hoy este ejemplo. Por eso, me honraabrir las puertas de ella al lector de estas pgi-nas. Creo que ellas sorprendern a muchos. Laobra de los artesanos, la destreza de los jinetes,la pujanza de los criadores, el entrelazamientodel mundo militar con el mundo civil, el climafamiliar, la amenidad contagiosa que impera du-rante esos das, conrman cun importante esaquella parte de Chile que se maniesta aqu.

This is a complement, an ele-ment that we need in city life. That is why a groupof us got together to work on rediscovering thoseroots which were gradually becoming hidden. The

success of the Week of Chilean Identity indicatesthat it responds to a real need.

It is a mixture of aspects which make up acomplete vision of the nation. It expresses a com-plexity true of all souls. It expresses the perma-nence within change, and variety in permanence.That is why, although these festive days take placeannually, their repertory is never repeated. The

continuous renewal of the elements which make

up this activity stimulates curiosity about thenovelties of the traditions year after year. Thething is that life in the countryside is very rich, itdoes not tire, it is lively, harmonious and varied. Incontrast to urban life which is fast and rather thanbeing adjusted to human rhythms, imposes itselfupon them, rural life is peaceful and reconstitutesour most intimate nature.

Developed countries understand this phe-nomenon very well. They zealously protect every-thing which represents their national identity,

their vibrant culture, their own style, their soul,to the point where these are converted into theunmistakable signs that distinguish their uniquecharacteristics. You can even say that there is a re-lationship between the high level of development

in these countries and the weight given to theirown specic values, however much they may beopen to globalization.

With the Week of the Chilean Identity ourcountry today follows this example. For this rea-

son, it is my honor to open the doors of it to thereader of these pages. I believe that these pageswill surprise many. The work of the artisans, theskill of the riders, the energy of the breeders, the

strong relationship between the military and civilcommunities, the family climate, the contagiousenjoyment during these days, conrm the impor-tance of that aspect of Chile which manifests itselfat that time.

Luis Ivn Muoz no oculta su emocin y en-tusiasmo hacia las tradiciones que brotaron en laantigua sociedad rural de nuestro pas. Con granagilidad de espritu relaciona la Semana de laChilenidad como una continuidad creativa de lasestas realizadas antao, en el Santiago de nues-tros mayores. Creativa, recalcamos, porque LuisIvn no se abandona a la nostalgia; su entusiasmomira siempre al futuro.

Durante el siglo pasado se celebraba en la

Quinta Normal de Santiago una gran Fiesta del Ca-ballo Chileno relata, la que era organizada porla Sociedad Nacional de Agricultura. En esa estase haca una exposicin nacional de caballos chi-lenos, y de otros caballares, como asimismo unaExposicin Nacional de todas las razas de anima-les; se haca un Gran Rodeo, que congregaba a los

mejores exponentes del pas; y se hacan tambinestas y juegos chilenos de toda ndole.

Era una esta que lamentablemente se fueperdiendo con el tiempo, pero que quienes tuvi-mos la oportunidad de conocerla personalmente,o por los dichos de nuestros mayores, la seguimosaorando, y siempre era un referente que tena-mos en mente cuando se quera organizar algn

gran evento en torno al Caballo Chileno.

Y justamente, el lector atento descubrir enlas expresiones de muchos protagonistas de estaspginas, esa especie de embrujo que irradia el

The Energy and Vision of the Equestrian World

Luis Ivn Muoz does not conceal his emo-tion and enthusiasm when it comes to the tradi-tions which spring from the old rural society ofour country. With great liveliness, Luis Ivn linksChilean National Identity Week to the creative

continuity of past celebrations, in the Santiagoof our predecessors. Creative, we stress, becauseLuis Ivn does not succumb to nostalgia; his en-thusiasm is always looking forward to the future.

During the last century a grand Celebra-

tion of the Chilean Horse was held in the QuintaNormal in Santiago he recounts which wasorganized by the National Association of Agri-culture. At this celebration there was a great na-tional exhibition of Chilean horses, and of otherequine species, as well as a National Exhibitionof all kinds of animals; there was a Great Rodeo,which brought together the best practitionersof the sport in the country along with festivitiesand Chilean games of all kinds.

It was a celebration that unfortunatelyprogressively disappeared as time went by, butthose of us who had the opportunity to knowof it, personally or through our predecessors,continued to miss it, and always had it in mindwhenever it was desired to organize any grandevent concerning the Chilean Horse.

And precisely, the attentive reader will discoverin the expressions of many of the main characters of

Cuan-tos han conocido de cerca las tradiciones que cre-cen en los campos, se sienten persuadidos queen ellas orecen tambin las mejores muestrasde identidad nacional. As, no sorprende que lareunin de todos estos anhelos en una expresincomn haya logrado una repercusin nica.

Cuando se inici la Primera Semana de la

Chilenidad, nadie imagin ni en el ms acaloradode sus sueos, que bamos a lograr crear en po-cos aos un espacio en el cual se vuelven a viviren familia todas las tradiciones chilenas, tanto delcampo como de la ciudad, en un grato ambientede cercana y camaradera, donde la seguridad delos visitantes es cuidada de tal forma, que abuelosy padres pueden dejar a sus nietos e hijos correr

y disfrutar de los juegos y espectculos chilenos,

rodeos, exposiciones, carruajes antiguos, carrerasde perros galgos, circo, juegos criollos, exhibicinde artesanas de todos los rincones de Chile, etc.

La Federacin de Criadores organiza estoseventos junto a las Municipalidades de Las Condesy Vitacura.

En su desarrollo y a travs del tiempo sehan incorporado otras tantas organizaciones que

han visto en la Semana de la Chilenidad un espaciopara fortalecer nuestras races, espacio que haba

desaparecido y que hoy fue rescatado.Sin duda, algo que ha sido un mrito muy

reconocido. La iniciativa ha ido ganando distin-ciones y premios a lo largo del tiempo. La Se-mana de la Chilenidad se ha hecho acreedora de

todos los grandes premios e incentivos creados

por empresas e instituciones que buscan precisa-

mente difundir nuestros valores patrios entre los

jvenes para que en un mundo de globalizaciones,

jams pierdan su identidad como chilenos.

El empuje que se evidencia en todos losdetalles de la gran muestra, a pesar del tiempoy esfuerzo que consume, nunca agota los brosde los participantes. Porque la fragancia de laautenticidad impregna a quienes respiran el am-biente. La agitacin disolvente de la vida urbanadesaparece, y la vitalidad amable y humana dela vida del campo abre sus puertas para recibir asus hijos prdigos.

Therefore, it is hardly surprising thatthe melting of all these wishes into a single commonmanifestation has achieved a unique reaction.

When the rst Chilean National IdentityWeek took place, no one in his wildest dreamscould have imagined that, in just a few years,we were going to create an event in which allthe Chilean traditions would once again beexperienced in a family setting, in the city andin the countryside, in a pleasant atmosphere ofnearness and camaraderie, where the visitors se-curity is so well taken care of, that grandparents

and parents can let their grandchildren and chil-dren run around and enjoy the games and Chileanspectacles, rodeos, exhibitions, old carriages,greyhound races, the circus, local games, exhibi-tion of handicrafts from all corners of Chile, etc.

The Federation of Breeders organizesthese events in collaboration with the Munici-palities of Las Condes and Vitacura.

As it developed in time, various other or-ganizations have become involved, as they have

discovered in Chilean National Identity Week, aforum for strengthening our roots, a forum whichhad disappeared and was rediscovered today.

Without doubt, a merit has been widely recog-nized. The initiative has won distinctions and prizesas time goes by.Chilean National Identity Week hasbeen deserving of all the major prizes and incen-tives created by rms and institutions that espe-cially seek to promote our patriotic values amongthe youth, so that in a globalized world, they willnever lose their identity as Chileans.

The energy, which is evident in all the detailsof the great display, in spite of the time and eortrequired, never overcomes the spiritedness of theparticipants. Because the avour of authenticity

imbues all who breathe the ambience. The enfee-bling agitation of urban life disappears, and thefriendly and human vitality of country life opensits doors to receive its prodigal sons.

Corren Vientos de Fiesta ChilenaA Chilean Celebration is in the air

Se habla y se discute mucho sobre estabreve palabra: identidad. Arduos escritos oextensas charlas buscan desenredar el nudo delasunto, y a veces parecen apretarlo antes queliberarlo. Probablemente sea porque buscan lasolucin en solitario, cuando la identidad es engran medida el fruto de una comunidad.

Por lo mismo, la Semana de la Chilenidad or-ganizada por las Muicipalidades de Las Condes yVitacura en conjunto con la Federacin de Cria-dores de Caballos Chilenos es un evento que lo-

gra lo que se propone: ser una invitacin abiertaa dicha comunidad, para crear un ambiente don-de cada elemento lleve el sello de lo indiscutible-mente chileno. Y lo consigue, no por los compo-nentes puramente materiales de esta esta, sinogracias a los participantes: personas que quierensentir al pas, que van en familia a contribuircon su propia chispa de chilenidad, que vibra encomn con todos los dems que estn all.

Seguramente nadie acude con el nimo deescribir un libro; pero quien quiera escribirlo, de-

bera venir a este lugar. Se dar cuenta que a unpas lo hacen sus familias, que la identidad seva moldeando en su interior. Al n y al cabo, ques un pas, sino el lugar donde sus habitantes sesienten en casa? Y qu es sentirse en casa,sino sentirse en el lugar donde est la familia? Eltono familiar dene a la nacin.

As, rumbo al bicentenario de la Repblica,la Semana de la Chilenidad aporta algo funda-mental: un marco donde los estilos del pas, suvoz y hasta su rostro se deja ver, repartido enlas voces y los rostros de los nios, los jvenes,los adultos y los ancianos que respiran la alegracompartida de pertenecer al mismo terruo. Eselugar donde tienen una forma propia de rer ode llorar, de cantar o de hablar, de festejar o decontemplar la vida.

Le invitamos a iniciar un viaje por caminosque llevan hacia lo mejor de nosotros mismos.

This little word identity is much mentionedand discussed. Serious documents or long lectures

are dedicated to getting to the bottom of thematter, and at times this seems to obscure ratherthan clarify it. This is probably because the solu-tion is sought in isolation, when identity is largelythe product of a community.

This is why Chilean Week, as organized by theMunicipalities of Las Condes and Vitacura in colla-boration with the Federation of Horse Breeders,

is an event which achieves what it sets out to do:

to be an open invitation to the said community,to create an atmosphere each element of whichbears the seal of being indisputably Chilean. Andit does this, not through the purely material com-ponents of the celebration, but thanks to the par-ticipants: people who want to feel the country,who go in family groups to contribute their sparkof Chilean identity, and who thrill in common with

all the others present.

Surely no one attends the event with the in-tention of writing a book; but anyone with that

intention should go to that event. They will realizethat a country is created by its families, that iden-tity is forged from the inside. In the end what isa country, if not the place where its inhabitantsfeel at home? And what is feeling at home if

not feeling oneself in the place where the family isto be found? The family tone denes the nation.

Thus, in the run up to the bicentenary of theRepublic, Chilean National Identity Week contri-butes something fundamental: a framework inwhich the styles of the country, its voice and evenits countenance are revealed, in the voices and thefaces of the children, the youth, the adults and theelderly who breathe in the shared happiness of be-

longing to the same land. This place where theyhave their own way of laughing or crying, singingor talking, of celebrating or of contemplating life.

We invite you to begin a journey throughpaths that lead to the best of ourselves.

Escuadra Ecuestre Chilena:

Aliento de Generaciones

Alfredo Moreno Charme, nombre respe-tado en el mundo empresarial, adquiere otraproyeccin en la Semana de la Chilenidad. Aqu

es el gestor de la Escuadra Ecuestre Chilena,del Criadero Palmas de Peaor, un elenco de22 jinetes y 35 caballos que intengran su esposay sus hijos y que ha ido conquistando al pblicocon sus perfectos despliegues.

Este espectculo ha ido creciendo sin apu-ro, pero con rienda rme. Naci en el criaderode Alfredo Moreno como manera de mostrar suspropios caballos. Muy pronto se fue entretejien-do con aspiraciones ms profundas, exploran-do la identidad campesina para proyectarla con

nuevo brillo hacia el resto del mundo.La Semana de la Chilenidad los aplaude ao

tras ao. El fervor que despierta el dominio ma-gistral de la rienda, la cabalgadura, sumado a losbailarines, las msicas y las vestimentas, es msque satisfaccin por un buen espectculo: la Es-cuadra de los Moreno alcanza las bras comunesa nuestra identidad. Por eso, en una exhibicinque comienza siendo ecuestre, nadie se extraaal ver tambin escenas de una minga en Chilo,una procesin de la Virgen del Carmen o hastaun eco de los bailes religiosos de La Tirana, en unsoberbio caleidoscopio.

La Escuadra comienza a desbordar nuestrafrontera gracias a la colaboracin de Luis Bustos,director de la Escuadra Ecuestre de Cabaa La Re-pblica, Argentina. Para l, esto es un hecho cultu-ral relevante, mucho ms que un espectculo. Tieneconnotaciones que hacen bien a todo el pas.

The Chilean Equestrian Squad: Enthusiasm of Generations

Alfredo Moreno Charme, a respected perso-nality in the business world, takes on another rolein Chilean National Identity Week. Here is the man

behind the Chilean Equestrian Squad, of theBreeder Palmas de Peaor, a team of 22 riders,including his wife and children, and 35 horses,which has conquered the public with its perfect

performances.

This spectacle has evolved slowly but undertight rein. It was born in the stables of AlfredoMoreno as a way of showing his own horses. Soonit became interlinked with deeper endeavours,the exploration of rural identity in order to pro-

ject it more sharply to the rest of the world.

Chilean National Identity Week applaudsthem year after year. The fervor which is awake-

ned by the magisterial domination of the reins, thehorsemanship, as well as the dancers, the musicand the costumes, is more than enough to guaran-tee a good spectacle: the Moreno Squad touchesthe common roots of our identity. This is why, inan exhibition which starts of being equestrian, noone is surprised to also see scenes of a mingain Chilo, a procession of the Virgin of Carmen or

an echo of the religious dances of La Tirana, in aproud kaleidoscope.

Ramn Cardemil fue uno de los grandes ji-netes del rodeo chileno, acaso el mejor. Un cam-pen histrico que gan siete veces el Campeo-nato Nacional, para convertirse en una leyendaviviente del mundo corralero. Fundador del Cria-dero Santa Elba nombrado as en homenaje a suesposa este hombre sencillo, alegre y dinmicosac al rodeo de su condicin de mero pasatiem-po campesino hasta convertirlo en un deporteconsagrado. Sobran razones para entender elluto que cubri a la familia del rodeo ante la par-tida del Prncipe de los Huasos, como algunavez se lo llam, con 90 aos cumplidos, el 8 deseptiembre de 2007 en Curic. Durante la Sema-na de la Chilenidad, la Escuadra Ecuestre Chilenahizo una pausa, para despedir la gura del grancampen ausente, que ahora cabalga en mejo-res praderas.

Ramn Cardemilwas one of the great riders,if not the greatest, of the Chilean rodeo. A historic

champion who, in winning the National Cham-pionship seven times, became a living legend ofthe sport. The founder of the Santa Elba Breederso named in honour of his wife this simple, hap-py and dynamic man took the rodeo out of being amere rural pastime, and made it into a recognized

sport. There are more than enough reasons forunderstanding the mourning that engulfed therodeo family at the passing of the Prince of the

Huasos, as he was once referred to, at 90 yearsof age, on the 8th of September 2007 in Curic.During Chilean National Identity Week, the ChileanEquestrian Squad made a pause, to say farewellto the great absent champion, who now rides in

better elds.

El alcalde Francisco de la Maza es una gu-ra muy reconocida en el escenario pblico. Susfacetas poltica y profesional, sin embargo, pa-recen acaparar la mayor atencin, cuando exis-te otra dimensin tambin, menos masiva si sequiere, pero profunda: la del hombre ligado a latierra. Este vnculo, discreto como suelen serlolas grandes races, genera el impulso con que ali-menta sus dems actividades. Su enfoque acer-ca del mundo de la identidad demuestra una am-plitud caracterstica:

Una de mis motivaciones principales, algoque siempre me ha llamado la atencin, es la iden-tidad nacional. Me parece que, en ese sentido,desde que nuestro pas se abri al mundo, ha idocambiando: se siente ms seguro, sale a invertirafuera, etc. El ao 1992, como concejal del alcalde

Joaqun Lavn, pens que se deba buscar un enfo-que importante en relacin a este aspecto, el de la

Mayor Francisco de la Maza is a well recog-nized public gure. His political and professional

facets, nevertheless, seem to attract most atten-tion, while there is another side to him, less wellknown if you wish, but that of a man close tothe earth. This link, as discreet as often are deeproots, is what motivates his other activities. Hisapproach to the world of identity demonstrates acharacteristicly broad outlook:

One of my main motivations, somethingwhich has always attracted my attention, isnational identity. It seems to me that, in thismatter, ever since our country opened up tothe outside world, it has been changing: it feelsmore secure, it invests outside of the country,etc. In 1992, as a councillor of Mayor JoaqunLavin, I thought that an important approach tothis aspect should be sought, that of a countryvision.

The idea came to me after some travelon public service to Europe, especially to Spain,

where each locality celebrates its day andeveryone comes out to celebrate wholesomelyits identity, as happens in the celebrations of thefeast of Saint Joseph in Valencia or in Barcelo-na for the day of San Juan, or even in Englandwith the Changing of the Guard. In Chile it hashappened, on the contrary, that even as naturehas been generous with us, as a country we havebeen very little conscious of this.

Recuerdo haber planteado al alcalde Lavnque tenamos que buscar algo relacionado con laidentidad y organizarlo en el perodo de Fiestas Pa-

trias. Empezamos a hablar con los huasos, y abor-dando el asunto en casa de Felipe Bunster, junto aLuis Ivn Muoz, se me ocurri proponerles invitara Agustn Edwards, para tantear si algo de esta na-turaleza le entusiasmara. Efectivamente as se hizo.

Tres das despus me llam Luis Ivn para contar-me que la idea haba sido bien acogida, y se le habadado el nombre de Semana de la Chilenidad.

As empez. Pensamos en dos nes de sema-nas, en programar actividades, artesana, rodeo...y parti el ao 94 en el Parque Araucano.

Como ocurre en los grandes proyectos, im-plicando un corazn grande y una imaginacinvaliente, la Semana de la Chilenidad requiri elvigoroso compromiso de sus creadores. Todosellos estuvieron dispuestos a poner su partepara dar rmeza a este proyecto, que tena mu-cho de visionario y de idealista. As lo recuerda elalcalde de la Maza:

I recall having put it to Mayor Lavin that wehad to look for something related to identity andorganize it during the Independence Day Celebra-

tions. We began conversations with the huasos,and in discussing the matter in Felipe Busters house,together with Luis Ivn Muoz, it occurred to me tosuggest that we invite Agustn Edwards, to ascer-tain whether something of this nature could pro-voke his enthusiasm. In eect that was how it wasdone. Three days later Luis Ivn telephoned to tellme that the idea had been well received, and giventhe name of Chilean National Identity Week.

That is how it started. We envisaged twoweekends, programming activities, handicrafts,rodeo... and it began in 1994 in Araucano Park.

As happens with grand projects, implyinggreat heart and courageous imagination, ChileanNational Identity Week demanded the utmostcommitment of its creators. All of them were dis-posed to make their contributions to back this pro-

ject, which was quite visionary and idealistic. Thatis how Mayor de la Maza remembers it:

Con la partida de esta idea, se constituytambin el comit de la Federacin de Criadoresy la Municipalidad de Las Condes, donde el primer

gerente fue Felipe Bunster. La sacamos adelantecon un esfuerzo gigantesco; haba que demostrarque era una actividad atractiva, pero tambin ha-

ba que inventarlo todo. Hablamos con Carabine-ros, nos conseguimos el Cuadro Verde, pues saba-mos que convocaba al pblico. Hasta el ao 2000 la Semana de la Chileni-dad tuvo lugar en el Parque Araucano. En l ha-bamos comprobado que la idea funcionaba. Perocuando fui electo alcalde empec a imaginar otrolugar ms potente. Habamos crecido, la comunade Vitacura ya estaba participando en el evento

Municipality of Las Condes was also constituted,the rst manager of which was Felipe Bunster. Webrought it into being with an immense eort; it hadto be shown that it was an attractive activity, buteverything had to be invented. We spoke to thePolice, we got the Green Square, since we knewthat this would bring in the public. We spoke tothe Rodeo Federation, to x a date, and from thisthe father and son rodeo was born. Interest inparticipating in the show of handicraft came fromthe regions. We spoke to a couple of restaurants,for them to organize the gastronomic aspect, andwe set up a stage for the participation of nationalartists, like the Huasos Quincheros.

Up until the year 2000 the Chilean NationalIdentity Week took place in the Araucano Park.At that location we had proven that the conceptwas workable. But when I was elected mayorI began to think about a larger venue. We hadgrown, the commune of Vitacura had already

desde 1996 Hubo algunas resistencias al cambiode ubicacin, pero una vez que visitamos el nue-vo lugar el Parque Padre Hurtado, Agustn Ed-wards coment que se senta como en su fundo dela Compaa. pases, lo que ha potenciado esta actividad. Lapresentacin de las Bandas nos acompaa desdeel ao 2006, cuando coincidimos con una activi-dad del Ejrcito.

En la Semana de la Chilenidad, el asistenteencuentra a cada paso la asociacin del hombrey el caballo. Esta antigua camaradera da origen a

momentos espectaculares. El Cuadro Verde arre-bata ovaciones. Su verdadero virtuosismo con lasriendas logra despertar asombro incluso en gen-te familiarizada con el ambiente de las cabalgadu-ras. Otro tanto hace la Alta Escuela de Caballeradel Ejrcito, que junto con su destreza, parecentraer consigo la Historia de los jinetes militares,tan gloriosa y tan cercana para todos los presen-tes. Sus evoluciones en la explanada son acom-paadas por una vibrante banda instrumental,creando un ambiente completamente nico.

Ese mismo caballo, ahora dcil y elegante, seincorpora a otra imagen muy propia del campo:los coches. Antes una necesidad de transporte,ahora la conduccin de carruajes se ha transfor-mado en un deporte con gran vitalidad, pujante,que acapara la atencin de maestros extranjerosy hbiles manos chilenas, para exhibir una notacomn de toda su pericia y elegancia.

No menos se puede decir de los Caballos dePaso Peruanos, que llegan como invitados para el

deleite de todos; la gracia del trote que distinguea estos animales, junto al hermoso atuendo de susjinetes, pintan una imagen llena de encanto, queenriquece singularmente las jornadas del Parque.

As, quien tenga ocasin de presenciar todoesto en una sola tarde, descubrir que las tradi-ciones y virtudes del campo no se han oscureci-do. Al contrario, emiten un claro fulgor de ama-necer.

Cuando Chile

spectator encounters at every step the association

of man and horse. This old camaraderie gives rise

to spectacular moments. The Green Square winsapplause. Its genuine virtuosity with the reins manages to arouse astonishment even among thosefamiliar with the world of horsemanship. Anothercontribution is that of the horsemen of the HighCavalry School or the Army, which together withskill, seems to bring with it the History of military

cavalry, so glorious and so close to those present.Their movements on the parade ground are accom-panied by a stirring instrumental band, creating aunique atmosphere.

That same horse, now tame and elegant, canbe glimpsed through a dierent prism very typi-cal of the countryside. That of the coaches. Oncea necessary means of transport, coach driving hasbeen transformed into a sport, of great vitality and

vigour, which captures the attention of foreign expo-nents and dextrous Chilean hands, to demonstrate acommon thread of skill and elegance.

No less can be said of the Horses of the PeruvianGait, which come as invitees to the delight of all

and sundry; the grace ot the trot that distinguishesthese animals, together with the beautiful attire oftheir riders, create an enchanting image, which sig-

nicantly enriches the performances in the Park.

Thus, whomsoever has the opportunity toexperience all this in a single evening, will realizethat the traditions and virtues of the countrysidehave not been dimmed. On the contrary they emitdawns clear light.

All of Vitacura was farmland, the everydayexistence of which functioned at the rhythm ofthe countryside, with its live traditions. Today weare a commune full of urban and business projects,with much movement, which is what impressesat rst sight, but that is not its true essence. Thedesires of our neighbours are much more orientedtowards a rural life-style, quieter, more retired, dis-tancing itself from so much noise and hustle. Here

the people, back from work, get home to a changeof rhythm, far from the noisy world, and that iswhen the rural roots, that we all share, emerge.

To put it another way, it is the daily conjuring

up of a life-style better adjusted to the nationalpsychology, traditionally inclined to social rela-tions and space to cultivate them, something lostwith the quickened pace of modern life.

Las palabras del Alcalde Torrealba reejanel clido compromiso que lo liga con la Semanade la Chilenidad, de la cual se ha transformado

en impulsor como autoridad de la Municipalidadde Vitacura, junto a la Municipalidad de Las Con-des y la Federacin de Criadores de Caballos Chi-lenos.

Su gura no est sola en las labores; muypor el contrario, el Alcalde viene rodeado consus hijos, nietos, amigos pues la Semana de laChilenidad parece ociar como un gran e impro-visado saln donde las amistades se reavivan, re-pasando las anidades profundas que alimentan

sus lazos, dejndose envolver por un vigoro so-plo de autenticidad en que el estilo globalizadode la metrpoli parece lejano.

La Semana de la Chilenidad subraya el Al-caldees una verdadera proeza. Todo ese mundoque recibe al visitante es fruto de mucho esfuer-zo, de la colaboracin de todos y de las ganas que

ponemos para levantar esta muestra. Queremosque las cosas se hagan bien, porque Chile se mere-ce esta labor de rescate. Para muchos, y eso lo hecomprobado, es el primer lugar donde han visto

tradiciones que de otra manera se estaban que-dando sin espacio para manifestarse. Tambin esemocionante ver la vitalidad que esto tiene. Nues-tro mrito fue saber colocar esta puerta y abrirla,

nada ms. Las tradiciones estaban vivas, esperan-do su momento para ayudarnos, para hacernossentir miembros de una familia comn, con unahistoria compartida. As tambin es posible mirary construir juntos el futuro del pas.

It is enough to observe people. They arrivein a hurry, typical of the inhabitants of Santiago,but little by little they calm down, their moodchanges, gets better, and there are more smilesand togetherness. I believe that this tranquillitycomes from discovering themselves as mem-bers of the same family, or in this case, of thesame tradition, the same past. At this stage, theonly anxious ones are those of us who have theresponsibility of organizing or participating insome of the displays, spectacles, competitionsand whatever! But even in that, working, one isat rest because one feels fullled.

Mayor Torrealbas words reect the warmthof the commitment that links him to Chilean Na-tional Identity Week, of which he has become an

organizer in his role as an ocial of the Munici-

pality of Vitacura, together with the Municipa-lity of Las Condes and the Federation of ChileanHorse Breeders.

He is not alone in his eorts; much to the con-trary, the Mayor comes to the task surrounded byhis children, grandchildren, friends... thus ChileanNational Identity Week seems to function as a

great and improvised salon where friendships are

reborn, renewing the deep anities that feed itslinks, letting them evolve through a vigourousbreath of authenticity from which the globalized

style of the metropolis seems distant.

Chilean National Identity Week under-lines the Mayor is a genuine feat. This worldthat receives the visitor is the result of much ef-fort, of the collaboration of all and sundry andof our endeavors to realize this event. We wantthe things to be well done, because Chile de-serves this labour of rescue. For many, and thatI have experienced, it is the rst place wherethey have seen traditions that otherwise are

being left without an opportunity to be shown.It is also moving to see the vitality that this has.Our merit was to know how to install this doorand then open it, nothing more. The traditionswere alive, waiting for their moment to help us,to make us feel members of a common family,with a shared history. In this way it is also pos-sible to visualize and build together the futureof the country.

Entre los eventos celebrados da tras da,uno de los ms recordados fue el que hizo me-moria de la historia chilena, recuperando enmontajes teatrales, con lujo de detalles, las ba-tallas y personajes que han inscrito sus nombresen nuestra historia. El sueo de un pas indepen-diente germin en el corazn de nuestros prce-res, quienes no dudaron en sacricar sus vidas alservicio de esta idea, y echaron as los cimientos

del Chile que hoy conocemos. Esa muestra decoraje sigue alimentando nuestro ms legtimoorgullo, porque se puede decir que los chilenosde hoy habitan el sueo que tuvieron nuestrosantepasados hace casi doscientos aos.

En la misma jornada los pilotos de la Escua-drilla de Alta Acrobacia Halcones de la FuerzaArea de Chile pintaron el cielo con los coloresde nuestro pabelln.

Among the events celebrated day after day,one of the most memorable was that which re-called Chilean history, reproducing in theatricalscenes, in great detail, the battles and personali-ties that have their names inscribed in our histo-ry books. The dream of an independent countrywas born in the hearts of our forefathers, who

did not hesitate to sacrice their lives in the ser-vice of this idea, and thus laid the basis for the

Chile we know today. This display of courage con-tinues to feed our most legitimate pride, becauseit can be said that todays Chileans have the samedream as had our predecessors almost two hun-dred years ago.

On the same day of this event the pilots of

the Chilean Air Force Acrobatics Squadron, theFalcons, painted the sky with the colours of ournational ag.

Los Jaivas, un cono viviente de la msicanacional enraizada en lo popular, ofrecieron

una presentacin en la explanada del parque,atrayendo a un mar de pblico que sorprendi a

los propios organizadores. Este arrastre es unajusta recompensa para la banda, que ha hecho su

carrera llevando por el mundo sonidosextrados de la tradicin folklrica y mezclados

con aires contemporneos.

Los Jaivas, a living icon of national music ofpopular origin, performed on the esplanade of

the park, attracting a massive audience, which

even surprised the organizers themselves. This

popularity is a merited recompense for the group,

which has made its career by making known to

Muchas veces sucede que el recuerdo de unlugar queda asociado a un objeto; tanto, que laevocacin de ese sitio se ajustar al valor de las

cosas que llegan desde l. Si Amrica evocaba eloro para los antiguos conquistadores europeos; siel marl recuerda a frica, si la porcelana trae laimagen de China o el mrmol la de Italia... es fcilcomprender la importancia enorme de la labor delartesano, por cuyas manos simples pasan las mate-rias primas de la tierra para convertirse en imge-nes del pas, tan elocuentes y memorables comojams podr serlo ninguna embajada del exterior.

Dice ms de Chile una manta hilada con es-mero que un buen discurso; y por ello es uno de

los obsequios frecuentes a los dignatarios ex-tranjeros. Habla ms de nuestra riqueza una joyade lapislzuli que una estadstica, una cancininspirada que un grueso tratado

Paradjicamente, esta capacidad de elabo-rar la imagen del pas para el mundo han sidoconadas a manos casi salidas de la tierra. A suvez, la nobleza de esta labor ha ido moldeando alos artesanos, que de generacin en generacinhan ido remontando el camino de la excelencia y

han creado escuelas de perfeccin en el seno delas familias, enseando el aprecio por un trabajobien hecho, cultivando el afn por extraer todaslas maravillas que las cosas esconden entre susposibilidades.

material to be converted into images of the coun-try, as eloquent and memorable as could never beany embassy to the outside world.

A carefully woven poncho tells you moreabout Chile than a ne speech, which is why it is

frequently a present given to foreign dignitaries.A jewel of lapislazuli tells more about our richesthan a statistic, an inspired song more than an im-

portant treaty...

Paradoxically, this capacity to forge an imageof the country for the outside world has been en-trusted to hands almost derived from the earth.In its turn, the nobility of this task has eventuallymoulded the artists, so that from one generationto the next, they have gone on climbing the path

of excellence and have created schools of perfec-tion in the heart of the family, teaching apprecia-

tion for a job well done, cultivating the desire toextract all the marvels that are concealed in theirpossibilities.

Cae la noche. La oscuridad cubre el exte-rior de la medialuna, diluyendo las cosas en si-luetas sin nombre denido, pero al interior lasluces siguen encendidas, manteniendo la clari-dad de las formas y colores.

Tal vez podramos ver en esta imagen oca-sional una ltima metfora de la Semana de laChilenidad. Pues, en un mundo que se diluye enuna globalizacin voraz, la nocin clara de ser

quienes somos, con nuestras formas y coloresinconfundibles, juega un papel excepcional:preservar lo que hemos sido, para conquistarplenamente aquello que seremos.

Que esta gran aventura de la Chilenidadsiga viva, pujante, para amplicar la voz tpicade nuestra tierra en el gran concierto de lasnaciones modernas.

It is nightfall. Darkness covers the exteriorof the crescent, dissolving objects into indenitesilhouettes, but in the interior the lights are stilllit, maintaining the clarity of forms and colours.

Perhaps we can nd in this occasionalimagery a nal metaphor for Chilean NationalIdentity Week. Given that in a world whichdissolves in a erce globalization, the clear no-tion of being who we are, with our unmistakable

forms and colours, plays an exceptional role inpreserving what we have been, in order to fullyconquer what we shall be.

May this great adventure of Chilean Na-tional Identity stay alive, powerful, in order toamplify the typical voice of our land in the greatconcert of modern nations.
