Khutbah Theme: Akhlaaq Khutbah Date: 6/30/17 Khutbah Topic: Religion as Akhlaaq i

Resource Guide – 6/30/17

Objective:  To  understand  the  central  role  of  Akhlaaq  in  Islam  and  prepare  the  congregants  for  inculcating  the  virtues  in  their  lives.

• Akhlaaq  is  not  just  character;  it  is  the  principles  and  morals  which  reflect  faith.  o Akhlaaq  is  the  practical  manifestation  of  one’s  faith  and  thus  emanates  from  the  core  beliefs

of  the  believer  o As  such,  the  most  important  of  al  akhlaaq  is  tawheed,  and  it  is  around  it  that  all  the  other

characteristics  revolve  § “His  companion  said  to  him  while  he  was  conversing  with  him,  "Have  you  disbelieved  in

He  who  created  you  from  dust  and  then  from  a  sperm-‐drop  and  then  proportioned  you  [as]  a  man?”  [18:37]

• Allah  (SWT)  created  humans  in  goodness,  and  perfecting  character  is  returning  to  that  goodness  o “So  direct  your  face  toward  the  religion,  inclining  to  truth.  [Adhere  to]  the  fitrah  of  Allah  upon

which  He  has  created  [all]  people.  No  change  should  there  be  in  the  creation  of  Allah  .  That  is  the  correct  religion,  but  most  of  the  people  do  not  know.”  [30:30]

o “We  have  certainly  created  man  in  the  best  of  stature;”  [95:4]  • One  of  the  core  aspects  of  the  messenger-‐hood  of  the  Rasool  (SAW)  was  teaching  good  character:

o Yahya  related  to  me  from  Malik  that  he  had  heard  that  the  Messenger  of  Allah,  may  Allah  bless  him  and  grant  him  peace,  said,  "I  was  sent  to  perfect  good  character."  (Muwatta’  Malik)

• The  Rasool  (SAW)  is  the  model  of  perfect  character  o “And  indeed,  you  are  of  a  great  moral  character”  [68:4]  o “There  has  certainly  been  for  you  in  the  Messenger  of  Allah  an  excellent  pattern  for  anyone

whose  hope  is  in  Allah  and  the  Last  Day  and  [who]  remembers  Allah  often.”  [33:21]  • Tips  for  Khateebs

o Try  not  to  make  people  feel  like  they  are  completely  deficient  in  Akhlaaq.  Build  up;  don’t  dress  down

o Try  not  to  use  “values”  in  place  of  “virtues”  or  “ethics”  in  place  of  “morals.”  Values  are  subjective;  virtues  are  taught  by  Allah  and  His  messenger  (SAW).
