The FMA Informative in talking with DTE Chief Instructor Martin Torres asked what is the overall concept and principle of Direct Torres Extreme Martial Arts? His reply was simple and direct::Balance, Speed and Power are all basic tools utilized by the DTE practitioner, from begin-ning to advanced student. In this issue you will read and see that Chief Instructor Torres has taken it a step up from the last issue on Direct Torres Extreme Martial Arts (FMA Informative issue # 142) where Chief Instructor Torres described the basic layout of Direct Torres Extreme Martial Arts. In this issue he talks about the concept and principles and has his students demonstrate them whether in Filipino martial arts, Boxing, Mauy Thai, Ju Jitsu in its basic form and then going into its advanced form of execution.

DTE Chief Instructor Martin TorresChief Instructor Torres has had the opportunity to train with many excellent teachers and martial artists, as well as, the chance to extensively learn, train in and understand multiple disci-plines. These disciplines include mul-tiple Filipino Martial Arts, Combat Judo, Jujitsu, Western Wrestling, Western Boxing, Muay Thai (old and new style), Ed Parkers Kenpo Karate and sever-al styles of Kung Fu, including; Wing Chun, White Crane, Lama, Chen Style Tai Chi and Chi-nese Style Military Combatives. With this experience he has developed his own way of doing things based on his training, his real world experience and the deeper understanding he has gained from those experiences.

Direct Torres Extreme Martial ArtsExtreme Directness in Technique, Energy and Positioning are some of the main staples used in DTE where Less used effectively is definitely More. As well, Chief Instructor Torres teaches his students that transitioning ranges, rather it be from kicking to empty hands, to the clinch, to grappling, should be done seamlessly with no gaps, putting one into the best position. This, along with the power and speed that is inherently developed in the DTE training will leave little to no opportunity for one’s opponent to counter.Master Torres is based in Arizona and has multiple instructors representing DTE throughout the US, including Arizona, California and North Carolina, as well as, abroad.

Overall Concept and Principle of Direct Torres Extreme Martial Arts

It is having forward energy, meaning by this a main constant forward pressure. Not an aggres-sive pressure. What Chief Instruc-tor Torres learned through his past training you have to be loaded, “a practitioners energy cannot be coming in and out.” As they are executing their movements. This is one of the main concepts of Direct Torres Extreme Martial Arts (DTE) and is incorpo-rated in all the arts that are taught at the school, and this does not take away from the basic concepts of the different styles which are taught at Direct Torres Extreme Martial Arts. Believe it or not this concept most likely is one of the hardest concepts for a student to grasp during their training. So the student can have a better under-standing and be able to grasp this concept, DTE implicates drills in which the student can excel in fully grasping the principle and concept of forward pressure. Direct Torres Extreme Martial Arts believes that balance and timing has to be understood to be able to obtain power and speed. So what DTE does at times is during a drill the teacher will stop the practitioners instantly and checks their balance. If balance is not found the student then finds the weakness of their position and can correct it. (Chief Instructor Torres, remembers one time in a past confrontation during sparring he

was falling, but due to his under-standing the principle and concept lf balance he fell in such a way to counter his opponents technique and was able to knockout his op-ponent. Once a student has the principles and concept of balance and timing they will develop coor-dination, were speed, endurance, and power is easily obtained. A practitioner (student) in actuality will find that balance, timing and coordination is all linked. One cannot work without the other.

They can be ex-plained separately, but must work together to be able to improve one’s self, once un-derstood then the practitioner can proceed to another level of training. This can be built upon with the exercises or drills of Sinawali, focus mitts etc. to develop the coordina-tion of balance and timing. As stated before all this goes

What is the overall concept and principle of Direct Torres Extreme Martial Arts, whether Filipino martial arts, Combat Judo, Jujitsu, Western Wrestling, Western Boxing, Muay Thai (old and new style), Ed Parkers Kenpo Karate and several styles of Kung Fu, including; Wing Chun, White Crane, Lama, Chen Style Tai Chi and Chi-nese Style Military Combatives?

hand-n-hand or a student cannot successfully proceed to a higher level of training. Once obtaining the infor-mation of concepts and principles of balance, timing, and coordina-tion the student proceeds to use what they have learned and com-mences to engage the applications; trying to apply this in each or a particular art that is taught in DTE. Now one would think that this concept or principle would be different in each martial art, how-ever it must be realized that each martial art the concept, principle,

and theory for the combi-nation of balance, timing and coordination is basi-cally the same. Using this concept and principle as said earlier develops speed and power. Example in Mauy Thai the roundhouse kick devel-ops it power in opening and closing the hip when

kicking the opponent. Or in JuJitsu also in twisting (rotating) the hip to throw the opponent. These are very simple examples however if a practitioner understands the con-cept and the basics of the art they

are training in they will realize the similarities If the beginning student or practitioner has still has a problem with the concept, this is where DTE uses techniques, breaking

down the technique to its basic root. For the techniques that DTE teaches comes from the concept and principle of balance, timing building the coordination of speed and power.

These two photos are simply to illustrate how Instructor Jeff uses footwork to evade and punch to counter an attack. Note the use of the hips to help produce power whether throwing the punch or using the stick.

Again, starting from his last position, Jeff utilizes the opening and closing of the hips in order to generate power for a kick to Jay’s groin/inside thigh.

Sample Basic Filipino Martial Arts

1. Raymond is shown here using footwork to angle off and evade Jeromcy’s punch. Note also that at the same time Ray-mond is opening up his hips so he begin to generate power for a kick.2. Here we see Raymond delivering a powerful kick to his opponent. You can see how the throwing and closing of his hips help to develop proper power.3. And here is Raymond ending the scene with an elbow. Notice his position in relat1on to Jeromcy’s body and how his forward intent also throws Jeromey’s structure off.

1. Here Raymond attacks with a straight punch with his left hand.2. Liana slips to the outside; maintaining her stable stance.3. As Raymond re-tracks his strike, Liana follows it in with a small step to close the gap and take a better angle.4. Liana, using the forward momentum, has loaded up her counter offensive.5. Using the energy generated by her small movement, Liana attacks with a straight punch.6. By using proper body mechanics, notice how as the initial strike returns the second strike is already loaded7. Liana continues her movement by delivering a powerful cross.

1. Here Raymond and Liana start facing off.2. As Raymond throws a straight punch with his left hand, Liana times her counter by simultaneously attacking with an elbow and covering her head.3. Once contact is made, Liana sticks to Raymond’s arm and over-hooks it straight into an arm-bar. Notice how she uses her entire body to lean back to apply pressure on Raymond’s elbow.

This series shows Head Instructor for Eskrima, Jeff

1. using timing and footwork to simultaneously angle off, evade and counter Jay’s angle with a simple straight left. 2. Jeff quickly under-hooks Jay’s arm while striking with his right hand and pulling Jay’s head into a knee. Note Jeff arch-ing his body while throwing his hips forward for maximum power. 3. Because of the under-hook on Jay’s arm, Jeff is able to transition easily into an elbow lock. Because he has forward intent/energy, all Jeff has to do is simply walk forward to finish the take-down

Sample Advance Filipino Martial Arts

1. Jeromcy on the left and Raymond on the right get into the clinch position.2. Jeromcy then attempts to attack by leaning back and throwing a knee to the body.3. As Jeromey starts this attack Raymond feels Jeromey’s energy and begins his counter. (feeling and timing is crucial for this to work).

The next step once the concept and principle is fully understood is to use this and commence in simple free sparring where the student can apply this knowledge and is not like a mechanical form as in a technique.

1. Raymond and Mark facing off. As Raymond attacks with a right hand straight punch.2. Mark jams the strike by disrupting and taking Raymond’s stability.3. Mark continues by over-hooking the arm and delivering a strike to the head.

4. Having secured Raymond’s arm in the over-hook. Mark then uses Raymond’s unbalanced weight to start the inside leg trip take-down.5. Maintaining his forward energy Mark, prepares to transition to the ground by hooking around the neck as well.6. With his forward intent, Mark maintains control of Raymond’s arm and neck as he is taken down.

7. While securing the mount position, Mark tightens his holds. Notice how he has left little to no space for Ray-mond to easily counter.8. Mark can now continue on and finish Raymond off with whatever technique he desires.

4. Raymond jams the knee strike by disrupting and repositioning Jeromey’s weight back over his attacking knee.5. This forces Jeromey to plant that foot again in order to maintain his balance. At the same time, Raymond 1s able to keep his balance by repositioning through foot-work.

6.Raymond continues with this movement as he angles off to a safer and more advantageous position.7. The continuation of this movement completely ruins .Teromey’s stance and opens him up for a kick from Ray-mond. Raymond starts to open up his hips to begin generating power for his next move.8. In this photo you can see Raymond is beginning to close his hips continuing to generate power to deliver his kick to Jeromey’s lower leg, or whatever target he chooses.9. Here you can see the end sequence of Raymond’s kick showing the continuation of the momentum from closing his hips to generate as much power possible, taking out Jerorncy’s leg in the process.

1. Here Raymond and Liana start facing off. Raymond throws a cross with his left hand.2. Liana times her counter, by slipping to the outside and changing her level to increase power generation.3. First attacking with a upper-cut to the body, Liana then repositions her self with a slight step and pivot.

4. This small movement allows for Liana to close the gap and generate power for a sec-ond upper-cut; this time, to Raymond’s chin.5. Maintaining her stable position, Liana then finishes with a cross of her own.

1. Raymond attempts to strike Mark with a cross.2. Mark takes a small step to close the gap and jam the incoming cross. Raymond then attempts a wide hook. Which is countered with a straight punch.3. Mark’s stable position allows him to quickly over-hook Raymond’s right arm. Which begins to disrupt Raymond’s structure.4. Further control and disruption is gained by under-hooking the left arm.5. Raymond’s structure is further compromised by Mark closing up any free space between them.6. With control of Raymond’s arm and body, Mark is setup for his take-down.

7. Trapping Raymond’s feet with his leg and foot; Mark uses his body to continues his take-down.8. Maintaining control of Raymond’s arm and body; Mark follows the energy of the take-down..9. Notice how Mark keeps control of Raymond’s arm as he takes him to the ground.10. Once on the ground, Mark moves to a side mount position.11. As Raymond attempts to adjust, Mark shift Raymond to his side. Preventing him from rolling by with his knee. 12. Mark, feeling his opening, begins to transition into an arm-bar.13. Continuing to keep control of Raymond’s arm, Mark tightly secures Raymond’s head and body with his legs.14. Mark then finishes the arm-bar as he leans back and extends his hips upwards.

As the practitioner or student progresses in their free sparring, then the free sparring exercises continue to progress and upgrade in intensity of aggression. Direct Torres Extreme Martial Arts expressly resents building false confidence in their students. So a point that is communicated and expressly pressed on a student is for the student to realize their capabilities and not their false imagined capabilities.

4. Once he’s taken Jeromey down, he continues with forward intent using a knee on Jeromey’s body for control.5. Raymond again continues on while balancing his weight over Jeromey to finish him off with what-ever technique he desires.

This series shows Jeromey and Raymond facing off.

1. Raymond feigns going into a clinch baiting Jeromey to be more upright.2. Raymond then bend his knees and drops his weight.3. With forward energy and intent, Raymond shoots forward for a single leg take-down.
