WELCOME TO WOMEN IN SPORT

Thank you for your interest in becoming Chief Executive Officer of Women in Sport as we embark on our exciting next phase of growth.

We are experiencing a time of celebration for women’s sport: Gold medals flow to many of our female athletes and slowly but surely media coverage is increasing. More female athletes are paid as full-time professionals and the Government has listened to Women in Sport, implementing a 30% quota for the number of women on the boards of publicly funded sports organisations.

However, progress is relatively slow: the increased media coverage only exists at times of international competition; domestic women’s competition is barely visible. More female athletes are paid to work at their sport full time, but not all are - and those that are fortunate to be in sports which have attracted commercial investment, such as football and cricket, still earn significantly lower salaries than the men playing their sport. More men than women play sport, work in sport, coach in sport and occupy leadership roles in sport.

We want to change this persistent unfairness. Women and girls are missing out on the lifelong benefits of sport. We want to change this, now, for every woman and girl in the UK – and we need your help.

We are the only organisation in the UK that researches sport purely from the perspective of women and girls. We use the insight gained to drive change through campaigns and partnerships. Across all our work we include women and girls in socially deprived communities, where sport can have a uniquely empowering effect.

Ultimately, we do all of this to make sport fairer, and to make society stronger and more equal – through sport women can thrive and this benefits society as a whole. Our vision is a society where women and men have equal opportunities.

This is a great time to join us. We have a strong voice with Sport England and across government and we are now looking for a new Chief Executive Officer to work with the Board to take Women in Sport to the next level. There are plenty of opportunities open to us as we look to develop our next strategy. The foundations have been built and with the backing of social movements like #MeToo and the This Girl Can community, support for our cause is strong and growing – under your leadership we can turn this good will into action.

You will need to be willing to both lead and manage the work of the charity. Women in Sport is a small team that punches above its weight (circa 17 staff, many of whom are part time and 6 trustees currently). You will be able to operate as both Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer; juggling the competing demands of being an ambassador for the charity, raising money and championing the cause with more internally focused priorities such as managing operational delivery of our projects and day to day running of the business.

If you are excited by the opportunity to create a society where women and men have equal opportunities we look forward to hearing from you.

DEVELOPMENT AREAS• Building a community of local and

national champions (volunteers and entrepreneurs/small business owners, on and off line) who help support women and girls to be active in their own way.

• Investigate and better understand changing concepts of gender to ensure Women in Sport remains relevant and useful.

• Understand more about how technology can help women and girls engage with sport; seek to understand more, test new ideas and pilot at scale things that work.
