  • The Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows is a permanent exhibition which opened in February 2000 at Chicagos Navy Pier entertainment complex. It is the first American museum dedicated solely to the art of stained glass windows.Named after prominent Chicago collectors E.B. and Maureen Smith, the museum holds over 150 individual pieces displayed in four galleries: Victorian, Prairie, Modern, and Contemporary. The Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows is the only museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to stained glass windows. The museum is a millennium gift to the people of Chicago from Maureen and Edward Byron Smith, Jr., and their sons Edward and Peter Smith. The permanent installation is a joint venture with Navy Pier. The Smith family has been collecting stained glass windows since 1970. Their interest in Chicago history is represented by both secular and religious windows from Chicago. The family was dedicated to saving these important works of art at a time when stained glass fell out of fashion during the 1960s to 1990s and was in a danger of being discarded and destroyed.

  • The majority of the works originally came from Chicago-area buildings, and a number of prominent artists are represented, including John LaFarge, Adolfas Valeka, and Ed Paschke. The collection contains religious themes, secular work, and some more unusual items, including a stained glass portrait of basketball player Michael Jordan and a window created from glass soda bottles.
