Food Truck “Hump Days on the Great Bridge Waterways” Thank You to the Virginia Port Authority!

Think Local Think History ReThink Chesapeake. The Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways History Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and presentation of the historical significance of the Battle of Great Bridge, the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal, and the Dismal Swamp Canal.

Reenlistment Ceremony Our historic Battlefield Park was selected as the site for the April 2, 2014, reenlistment ceremony of Interior Communications Electrician 1st Class (IC1) Matthew Smith. Also pictured are his wife Temeka Smith; their children Seanna, Isaiah, and Denzel; and reenlisting officer Lieutenant (LT) Mark Rinschler. Congratulations to Petty Officer Smith!

If you haven't experienced Food Truck Hump Days on the Great Bridge Waterways, you are missing a perfect family event! These Food Truck Rodeos offer more than delicious food. Foundation Docents are onsite giving free tours at each event, and our partner, Chesapeake, Parks, Recreation and Tourism is onsite with children’s activities, and every 3rd Wednesday they offer free kayak rides. Other community participants include: Chesapeake Fire Department, Citizen Corps, Chesapeake Master Gardeners, and more. One Wednesday, the Foundation held a Hula Hoop Challenge for a $20 Gift Certificate to Spaghetti Eddie’s. Winners (pictured right) were Taylor Sawyer and Abby Bechthold. Another Wednesday featured free photo ops with Chessie, who arrived via Fire Boat! This is a don't miss community event, so bring your chairs and your appetites to historic Battlefield Park (1775 Historic Way, Chesapeake, VA 23320) every 1st & 3rd Wednesday, 4 PM - Dusk!

The City of Chesapeake Parks, Recreation & Tourism and the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways History Foundation are proud to announce that the Port of Virginia has generously granted $90,000.00 for a dock replacement at the Battlefield Park in Chesapeake, Virginia. Currently, yachter’s from all over the world travel our Intracoastal Waterways, and this generous funding will allow them to stop and spend time in Chesapeake and our neighboring communities thanks to the Virginia Port Authority for years to come. A special thanks to Department Head Mike Barber and Lennie Luke of Chesapeake Parks, Recreation and Tourism for helping to make this happen.

year they participate in the James River Batteau Festival and recreate the route taken in the early 1800’s that brought lumber, tobacco, and other goods down the James. Little did I dream that sharing my name, phone number and desire to make that trip might actually one day bring me the privilege of riding on the Lady Slipper. As you can see, dreams do come true and June 20 found me on the James River headed from Bremo Bluff on the Slate River to Cartersville for the next to last leg of the Lady’s week long journey. As one of nine members of the Lady Slipper all female crew, I learned to pole, swing oar and bail water during our 12 hour, 22 mile day on the James. Not all work, the ladies offered several opportunities to cool off in the James and a lunch fit for a hardworking batteau. A Virginian for life, I had never traveled or swam in the James, but I plan for it not to be my last time. This fall the Waterway Heritage Festival will give locals the chance to see the batteau and those devoted to keeping this part of our history alive. These dedicated re-enactors preserve a part of the rich inland waterway history that Great Bridge Battlefield and Waterways is so much a part of. All the more reason to come and enjoy the Festival this fall!”

Park Volunteers The Foundation has been so very fortunate to have such wonderful, helpful, and hard-working volunteers! Special thanks is due to each and every volunteer. We would like to take a moment to thank a few groups to recently help out at the park. Clean the Bay Day volunteers

Eagle Scout Project – Historical Signage A special thank you to Eagle Scout Logan Mazerick of Troop 408 for our new historical signage at Battlefield Park!

“As I looked toward retiring, people often asked about my plans. My answer usually involved admitting, I had not even had time to think about it as busy as my days at Great Bridge High kept me. Knowing myself, I was really just waiting for the adventure to find me. How excited I was when that first great bucket list item came only a week after GBHS graduation. I had met Gail Timberlake, author of The Rescue of the “Lady Slipper”, a few years ago when Great Bridge Woman’s Club provided breakfast for the bateaux crews during the Waterway Heritage Festival. Having always loved the water and riding aboard boats, I expressed my envy of her experience as a lady of the batteau. She explained every

Also a special thank you to Larry Higgerson of Higgerson Buchanan for donating mulch again this year!
