Brethren, The month of May is known most for Memorial Day. Memorial Day marks the be- ginning of summer, although as we all know, summer will not actually begin for an- other thirty days. Going to the beach and the opening of the community pool is associ- ated with the care-free spirit of the summer months. Ironic that summer begins with the honoring of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. Decoration Day (later changed to Memorial Day) was consecrated by Brother General John Logan (Union General) on May 30, 1868 in his leadership role of the fraternal group, The Grand Army of the Republic. Up to that point, it was witnessed that wid- ows would lay flowers on the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers, most noticeably in Waterloo, NY, where on May 5, 1866 it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags. Decoration Day was celebrat- ed on May 30 until 1971 when it was made an official holiday celebrated on the last Monday in May and the name was changed to Memorial Day. Brother Logan died a short time after being elected to receive the 33 0 , which was never conferred. If you are ever in Indianapolis, be sure to stop by Logan Lodge #577, named after the General. Whatever you are doing and wher- ever you are on Memorial Day, please stop at 3:00 p.m. and recognize the moment of silence dedicated to the fallen. May is also known for another celebratory day, Cinco de Mayo; the day the Battle of Puebla was won against the French in 1862. It is a bigger holiday in the United States than in Mexico, except in the State of Puebla. The French attacked Mexico after President Juarez stated foreign debt payments would be put on hold. When French troops arrived in Puebla, they met an undermanned, under-gunned group of rag-tag militiamen who defeated the French on May fifth. The news of the Mexican victory spread to California Hispanic miners who celebrated. After the Civil War, America helped Mexico to dispel the French. This holiday is not Mexican and not American, but truly Mexican-American. We Masons understand giving up the ghost. Those who have passed over are never really gone if we keep their memories alive in our hearts and minds. So, this May whether you are drinking a Margaretta or swimming in the pool, keep them alive. It is in remembering the deceased while living our lives that we unlock the significance of the passage, that undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns, and thereby cement the upper blocks of our character. Last month Worshipful Dave Potts gave a presentation on the Arlington Commandery Knights Templar. Brother Ted McNelis presented on Catholicism and Masonry Pat II”. Worshipful McElwain from Kemper-Macon Ware gave a historical synopsis on Columbia Lodge. All of these presentations were educational and enjoyable. This month we begin with Worshipful Michael Wills presentation: Explanation of the UK Master Mason Apron”. For the second stated communication, Worshipful Jon Ruark will give a presentation on the Philosophical Ele- ments of the Circumpunct”. These presentations will be enlightening and entertaining. On the 11 th of this month, the William Hiram Woods School will be held at Springfield Lodge – a great opportunity to see the exemplification of the Master Mason degree. Donuts and coffee at 8:00 a.m. and the exemplification of the degree starts at 8:30 a.m. I will take this opportunity to say thank you to Brother Andy Vellenga and Brother Rob Ortiz as well as to others too many to mention for doing outstanding work in keeping the ship right and for filling in where needed as I at- tended to my vocation. Brothers step up for the good of Masonry, and things get done, and for this a Worshipful Master should be ex- tremely grateful – and, I am. Secretary’s Corner Brethren, I gave a talk a couple years ago, I think, about the importance of saying no. I am reminded of that now, as I go into my last week of graduate school. I have been going on all cylinders for about two years between two jobs, school and the Lodge, and honestly have been late on many things for the Lodge, such as getting the newsletters out and the minutes finished. It has all gotten done but not as quickly as it should have been. For that I owe you an apology. Things are fixing to change for the better. Thank you to Bro. Jonathan Heisey-Grove for being the assistant secre-tary in my absence on May 16. This is an important job and I am glad it is in his capable hands. Bro. McNelis has been working hard on our application for the Hillman Award. We still have a few things to do. One thing we need to do every year is have brothers learn lectures and other ritual parts. Some parts are long and involved but some are short and easy to learn. Anyone interest-ed in serving his lodge by learning a new role should contact Wor. Dean Jones, our LIW. Thanks, Carl Weaver Secretary

On April 18 we had two excellent presentations before lodge. Wor. Eric McElwain, Worshipful Master of Kemper-Macon Ware Lodge, talked about the history of Columbia Lodge. Bro. Edward “Ted” McNelis

gave the second of his talks on Masonry and the Catholic Church. Both talks were very informational and were received with a hearty applause.
