For those graduating, we wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Many thanks to the members of our Landscaping Committee for all the volunteer work they have recently performed at the front entrance, including new plants and flowers and maintenance of the sprinkler system. In conjunction with the board, they also interviewed and hired a new landscaping company. Additionally, we plan to expand the sprinkler system, as it currently does not reach all the bedding areas. This will help us in our ongoing mission to keep Cherry Creek an attractive and well maintained neighborhood. Plans are underway for our Annual Independence Day parade and picnic (Pics from 2008 can be found on page 6). Paraders should meet at 9:30 am on Saturday, July 4th by the marquee in the front park on Silk Oak Drive. We will wind our way through the neighborhood and finish at the back park at the end of Silk Oak Drive. Kids, be sure to decorate your bikes, trikes, and skateboards. For those who are unable to join us in the walk, keep a watch out for us from your front yards. The picnic will begin at 11:30 am in the back park. The Association will provide hot dogs and hamburgers, with all the fixings, as well as lemonade and iced tea. We ask the neighbors to please bring a side dish or a dessert. We will also have our very popular snow cone machine, spin-art game, face painting by Erica and the inflatable “Moon Jumper”. Thank you to all our neighbors who have joined the association and paid their dues. As always, we encourage you to contact us with your concerns or suggestions and ask that you let us know if you would be willing to serve on a committee or join the board. No experience required! Sincerely, Barbara Statum President Congratulations to 9316 Lightwood Loop as our Yard of the Month. The owners, Lynda and Butch Williams, have lived in their custom built home since 1993. They began work on their new landscape, beginning with extensive stone work last summer. They recently added to their front yard plantings with red plumed Mexican Firestalk in front of their windows, as well as large philodendrons, hydrangeas, irises, several varieties of shade-loving hostas, yellow day lillies, and single-blooming yellow hibiscus. Also thriving are multi-colored impatients and pansies, as well as caladiums. A smaller curbside bed features crape myrtle, yellow and purple lantana and dusty miller. One corner of the back yard, also extensively landscaped, features a pergola that Butch built as well as several beds, one including a large limbed-up pittisporum that hosts yard art. Along the back of the home are lush variegated ginger and surrounding the patio are Blue Lilly of the Nile, blue plumbago and heuchera. This is a truly lovely and thoughtfully planned landscape. Thank you for allowing us to share this with our neighbors.

editors NoteSummertime and the living is easy. I see more

of us in our yards working to make them green and colorful. Yard of the Month must be a very difficult choice these days. If you are putting in gardens remember to mulch. Remember new plantings need to be watered in daily for 2 weeks. I am particularly looking forward to the rose garden going in on a corner I can see from my yard. Look in this newsletter for a great set of gardening tips by month and zone . I am always looking for new articles so please

feel free to submit…articles are due in by the 10th of month prior to the newsletter month. Also do not hesitate to send any events you would like mentioned in the ‘What’s going on in the Neighborhood’ section. Just send either to the email address: [email protected] don’t forget to join us for the 4th of July

Parade and Picnic this year. It is a great place to meet neighbors. I have included a few pictures from last year’s parade. It is fun regardless if you are in the parade or watching from the sidelines. Carmen

Yard Sale Rained out - Next one to be Announced

Our Cherry Creek Annual Yard Sale got off to a bad start with the rain. The early bird shoppers kept their distance till about 10 am when the last of the drops fell. Unfortunately, prime time for the best deals are between 8am and 9am. Yet, there were those of us who set up their white elephant items and did well. Several of the neighbors were disappointed by the rain and would like to have a rain date to try their luck again. Since we are allowed two sales a year, we would like to give it a second chance. Therefore, (Date to be announced) we will have another annual yard sale! You get a second chance to turn trash into treasure.

Informatin on oak WiltMany new Oak Wilt disease centers are caused by human activity. We can

all take steps to reduce the chance of starting a new Oak Wilt center.• Avoid pruning oak trees between early February and late June. • If it is necessary to prune susceptible trees, or if trees are wounded,

use a wound paint (pruning sealer) immediately. A new infection can be started quickly on a fresh wound (less than 15 minutes). Wounds are naturally sealed off by the tree after about a week. So painting old wounds is of no value.

• Trench around active oak wilt centers to stop the spread of the fungus through common or grafted roots.

• Watch trees in and around oak wilt centers for new infections. Take steps immediately to prevent additional spread.

• Sanitize cutting equipment with a bleach solution (or Lysol® spray) before cutting on an oak tree and before moving on to the next tree so as to avoid the possibility of cross contamination.

• Avoid firewood infected with the oak wilt fungus, unless it has properly dried (12 months). Cover new firewood piles with clear plastic for one year. Make sure that the edges of the plastic are buried with soil to prevent insect migration out of the wood pile.

Other sources of info would be the County Agricultural Extension Service or the A&M Oak Wilt Prevention website … Additional Information from Percy:1. No, the city doesn’t have any programs to help with this2. No, the city doesn’t have any laws about this3. It’s too late anyway, because the cuts heal up within a day - the

infection risk is during that first day, so painting needs to happen immediately to be of any use

Thanks for following up. Hope all is well.Cheers, Percy

our Dues Paying Neighbors!!We’re making some changes for some new improvements. Our front entrance has not been

taken care of the way we were hoping in the last year. This has been a disappointment for all concerned. We know from listening to some of your opinions the one thing that is important is making our front entrance look good so we look good. Our entrance is our first impression and has a lot to do with your home values. If someone

doesn’t like what they see as they enter the neighborhood it could have an influence on if they want to live here. For those of you selling your homes right now this could help push the buyer to want to buy your home. Our goal is to make our entrance as nice as we can with the funds we have. Thank you to

all of you who have joined our voluntary association and for those of you who haven’t this would be a good time to join. It’s all of us who contribute that will help make a difference in what we are able to achieve. We would like to leave the landscaping to professionals instead of having our committee trying to fill in.We are hiring a new company who is excited about being a part of our entrance improvements.

They have a vision for our neighborhood that works with our budget constraints and that we feel will give us the look we all want and desperately need. Their enthusiasm is very refreshing. They come with high reviews on their design, expertise, and maintenance. This would be a good time to get involved and pay your dues and help the neighbors who

are already members make the difference we want. We need your help to make it all come together.

Thank You,Carla Trautwein

You make us look good! A neatly landscaped and well-cared-for yard says a great deal about the homeowner and the entire neighborhood. It says we take pride in our property and in our neighborhood. Well-landscaped properties add to our home values as well. If there is a home in Cherry Creek that you would like to nominate for Yard of the Month, please email your suggestion to [email protected] or leave your written Yard of the Month address nomination in the front entrance drop box. There is no Yard of the Month during the winter months, January through March.
