How do metals bond?
• Metal atoms form a giant lattice similar to ionic compounds.
• Grains grow with atoms coming together in ordered patterns

Types of bonding
Atoms can be joined together in 3 possible ways
All three types involve changes in the electrons in the outermost electron shells of the atoms
Ionic Bonding
Metal and non-metal
Covalent Bonding
Non-metals only
Metallic Bonding
Metals only
![Page 9: Chemistry 2 Lesson 1.6 Metallic Bonding AQA Additional Science.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062423/56649e975503460f94b9a55a/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
• Outer electrons are free to move all over the lattice in a “sea of electrons” (delocalised).
• This leaves metal atoms with a + charge.
• Attraction between - and + acts like a glue
