Basics of Chemical
Treatment
Chemical treatment is still an essential component in many water and wastewater
treatment schemes. The general purposes of the chemical treatment are: removal of
suspended solids (turbidity) from the water; pH adjustment; removal dissolved
material in the water; improve water quality.
The Basic of Chemical Treatment that
Filter Innovations Inc. provides, is:
- pH adjustments and control
- Coagulation / Flocculation
- Precipitation
- Clarification

Basics of Chemical
Treatment
When to use a Chemical Treatment System
- To meet the local water discharge requirements, and save the customer
money in sewer charges or water removal charges
- To provide a quality of water required for the process
- Recovery of valuable product
- Remember: the smaller the particle the longer it takes to settle
0.0001mm diameter particles take 4 months to settle 10
What can be done using a chemical Treatment Systems
- Removal of suspended solids from the water (Turbidity)
- pH adjustment
- Remove dissolved material in the water
- Improve water quality
- Remove?????

pH Adjustment
pH is a measure of the activity of hydrogen ions (H+) in solution and, therefore, its acidity or alkalinity
pComponents in the system
ppH meterpReagent material (NaOH, H2 SO4 )
pMixing apparatus (Prop, Static)pRea gent introduction (Metering Pump)
pMixing Vessel
Why do we need to do this
pPrecipitate componentspMake secondary process more efficientpH meter
pMake the pH neutral for disposal

Coagulation
Coagulants neutralize the repulsive electrical charges (typicallynegative) surrounding particles allowing them to stick togethercreating clumps or flocs.
pComponents in the systempFlow meter
pCoagulant material
pMixing apparatus (Prop, Pump, Static)
pCoagulant introduction (Metering Pump)
pMixing Vessel
Why do we need to do this
pDestabilize the electrostatic repulsion

Flocculation
Flocculants facilitate the agglomeration or aggregation of thecoagulated particles to form larger floccules.
Components in the system
pFlow meterpPolymer material
pMixing apparatus (Prop, Pump, Static)
pPolymer introduction (Metering Pump)
pMixing Vessel
Why do we need to do this
pMake the components to be removed flocculate and make it
easier to remove from the clean water. Bigger particles getfiltered easier
pMake clarification efficient
Buoyant Floc
Heavy Floc

Chemical Testing
Easy performed by Filter Innovations to optimise and determine theright mixture of pH Adjustments, Coagulants and Flocculantchemicals to ensure
a trouble free system.
Requirements:
pRepresentative sample of water to be treated,
5 gallons minimum for testing
pWater lab test report
pWater quality discharge requirements
pFlow rate in final system
pOperetor involvement requirements

Clarifying the Wastewater
Once the water has been effectively pH Adjusted, Coagulated andFlocked the resulting sludge and clean water must be separated tofinish the process.

Slant Plate Clarifier (Lamalla)
pUtilizing gravity to separate solids in wastewater is the mostenergy efficient
pSlant plate is used to decrease the distance a particle has to fall
before it hits a surfacepThe flow rate of the clarifier is based on the particle density, surface area, fall rate, loading and temperature.

DAF Dissolved oxygen
Aeration Flotator
Membrane Biological Reactor (MBR) vs.
Conventional Activated Sludge TreatmentIn certain cases when sludge is less dense than
water, or neutrally buoyant, Dissolved AirFlotation (DAF) is used in Chemical TreatmentSystem.
p DAF utilizes billions of micro bubbles that attachthemselves to the flock and rise to the surface. These bubbles are known as whitewater.
p DAF unit requires a mechanical skimmer toremove floating sludge.
p Although, DAF unit needs more power to runcomparing with gravity settling clarifier, it isefficient when used in the right environment.

Particulate Removal Filters
Membrane Biological Reactor (MBR) vs.
Conventional Activated Sludge TreatmentpWhen sludge after coagulation/flocculation treatment is not desired and consists of the very
sensitive flocks, Filter Innovation offers following products as bag filters, self indexing filter, cartridgefilters or filter press, which support higher filtration requirements.
pAfter sludge/water separation, if further polishing is required, water is pumped into the vessels with
specialty media and/or activated carbon.

MBR - Wastewater Treatment
Depending on applications MBR can be
presented by different kinds of aggregates
Whole membrane filtration system includes:Membrane filters (membrane & support frame)
Permeate withdrawal system
Air scouring blower system
Permeate & mixed liquor recirculation pumps
Membrane cleaning system
Programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
Membrane filters are submerged into the treated water. The filtrate is drawn through and out of
the filters by the slightly negative pressure of only 0.1 bar (0.47 psig)
