Friends of the Library Corner

Our program 2017-2018 year ended on June 30 and, as you read this, plans are afoot for the coming year. So be sure to read the September/October Check It Out. Now is the time to recognize the many volunteers who work year round to sort books for sales, stock book sale shelves, present Random Reviews, and more.

When you donate a book to the Friends, the sorting process begins in our cubbyhole near the garage entrance to the library. Volunteers determine whether your donation will go to the book room shelves, one of our three annual sales, or online at Benton Books. Thank you to our diligent sorters, Andy Chiappissi, Carolyn Suckow, Barbara Edwards, Chris Jones, Connie Georgiou, Courtney Child, Doris & Dick Waring, Lloyd Klemke, Loreen Olufson, Lorna Glubb, Mike Clady, Nancy Loving, and Ray William. You are much appreciated. Hats off to you all!

Books going to one of the three book sales are transported to our warehouse and sorted into categories by topic. This congenial group, lead by Sally Shaw and Judy Ball, meets one morning a week and processes 1,200 boxes of books yearly. Thank you Sally, Judy, Scott Newsham, Kathleen Rochester, Lynn Leibensperger, Ray Miller, Russell Sullivan, Josiah Fisher, Chris Newsham, Xanthippe Augerot, Richard Griffen, Amy Usner, Gary Christianson, Charlyn Ellis, and Carolyn Suckow. Without your work, book sales would not happen. Take a bow!

Benton Books is our online outlet on Amazon for books higher-priced than those in our local sales. Customer feedback has rated our operation 5 stars and 99% favorable. Volunteers work 6 days a week listing books on Amazon and mailing orders. Judy Ladd coordinates the operation with volunteers Lois Malango, Nancy Schary, Valeen King, Ann Brodie, Carol Prueitt, Caroline Lee, Linda Jewett, and Camille Freitag. Kudos and many thanks!

For 25 years Friends have offered Random Reviews, a free program of reviews of selected books presented by local readers. Connie Georgiou and Debra Goldenberg are co-chairs and Kitty Bartee, Gail Gerdeman, and Bob Latham volunteer at each presentation. Gary Whitehouse designs the posters and bookmarks. Thank you for keeping this much appreciated and informative program continuing. Accolades and thanks!

The Friends board coordinates all of our fund raising, programs, staff support, and more. Many thanks to Mary Ann Carr, Dolly Chao, Ann Ellendman, Connie Georgiou, Corrine Gobeli, David Grube, Lynn Grube, Sandy Halonen, Lynda Hohenboken, Katherine Inman, Lois Malango, Stefani McRae-Dickey, Jacque Schreck, and Cathe Walker. Thank you for your faithful service to the Friends and the library.

A Murder in My

Hometown Rebecca Morris

Wednesday July 186:30pm | Main Meeting Room

“On a fall evening in Corvallis 1967, seventeen year old Richard Kitchel, a

senior at the high school, disappeared after attending a party. Several days later, his body was spotted as it floated down

the Willamette River. Nearly 50 years later, New York Times Bestselling author Rebecca Morris returned to her hometown to write about how the murder changed a town, a

school and the lives of his friends.”

In A Murder in My Hometown, Morris, a Corvallis native and classmate of Dick

Kitchel, digs into the first investigation and a second one decades later. There was never an arrest. Part true crime and part memoir, A Murder in My Hometown is set against the

backdrop of one of the most dramatic years in America, 1967-68.

Morris is an award-winning journalist who worked in Portland, Ore, New York City, and Seattle, Wa. She lives in Seattle. A Murder in My

Hometown is her seventh book.

Welcome Adrian!Volunteer Spotlight - by Adrian TeppermanI would like to thank all the staff and volunteers for welcoming me into the Libraries as the Volunteer Coordinator. It has been such a pleasure to get to know everyone and provide support for all of the volunteers and staff.

We have had several new volunteers come on board in the last month. We are welcoming in Gabi Snyder : Events, Suzi Wilson: Makers Kits, Jim Stratton: Events and possibly Dial A Book, Miriam Garcia : Los Cuentos Story time and Events, and Hongren Yao: Summer Reading Events. We have also had several student volunteers show interest in volunteering and Misa, Anne, and Sophia are looking forward to working in Youth Services and Circulation.

I am looking forward to this summer and all of the great Summer Reading Events happening at the libraries. The staff has been working hard behind the scenes to provide our system with exciting, stimulating and nourishing events. And I am continually amazed and thrilled at the diverse and interesting programs we offer to the community.

As Volunteer Coordinator, I am here to support the volunteer positions for events and in and around the libraries. Currently we have about 179 active volunteers who volunteer on average 1200 hours every month. The saying that it “takes a village” comes to mind when I think about the support the volunteers offer to the libraries. The time they donate helps provide the library patrons with a more pleasurable experience at all of the libraries, saves taxpayer money on day to day operations, and allows more time for staff to expand the services, programs and events we offer to the community.
