PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Schools Spectacular 2019 Term 4 is absolutely flying by. The last fortnight has been jam packed. On Friday, 22 and Saturday, 23 November we had 21 students take part in the Schools Spectacular 2019. The year’s event featured over 370 schools, 2,800 students in the choir, 2,300 dancers, an 80 piece symphony orchestra and a world class stage at Qudos Bank Arena. This year the theme was STARS and certainly well over 5,500 performers had the opportunity to shine brightly including our Panania Public School students. With beaming smiles they delighted audiences at all performances. We congratulate them on their efforts and thank their parents, families and teachers for their support. Tell Them From Me Survey Results (TTFM) Tell Them From Me provides insight into student engagement, wellbeing and effective teaching practices. Panania Public School results contribute to a state-wide research project led by the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE). With a continued focus on quality teaching and leadership it supports in identifying strategies and practices that improve student outcomes. Our findings are worth celebrating and include: Panania Public School Trends - 95% PPS students participate in sports compared to 83% NSW GOV norms - 86% of PPS students experience positive relationships compared to 85% NSW GOV norms - 92% of PPS students demonstrate appropriate effort when completing tasks compared to 88% NSW GOV norms - 71% of PPS students complete homework effectively compared to 63% NSW GOV norms Panania Public School Drivers of student outcomes compared to NSW GOV norms on a scale of 1-10 (above 6 is favourable) - Effective learning 8.4 compared to 8.2 - Relevance 8.1 compared to 7.9 - Rigour 8.4 matched to 8.4 - Advocacy at school 8.1 compared to 7.7 - Positive teacher-student relationships 8.5 compared to 8.4 - Expectations for success 9.0 compared to 8.7 There are always ways to grow and improve. Where to next? - 79% of students report a sense of belonging compared to 81% NSW GOV norms - 87% of students are actively trying to improve - 67% of students set challenges for themselves In light of this, a renewed focus on visible learning in 2020 and student well-being practices that support all students and ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for will be on the agenda for 2020. Stretch your Brain: Number Story How many handshakes would there be if I wanted to shake hands with the 11 members of the winning softball team and then I wanted each of them to shake hands with each other to congratulate each other on good sportsmanship? There are multiple ways of working this out. Which way did you use? What other ways could you use? You could role play, draw a picture or even break it down into smaller problems. The way you are thinking or working on this difficult problem is more important than getting a correct answer. Answer: n(n-1)/2= 66 handshakes. Critical and Creative Thinking Critical and creative thinking is one of the general capabilities that is embedded in our curriculum. Over the course of the year Ms Ambrose, Mrs Walker and Miss Howell have worked in a collaborative partnership with York Public School (Penrith) to share and develop innovative pedagogical practices. They led the implementation of a pilot program to highlight and magnify the use of critical and creative thinking in Stage 2 writing programs. Strategic planning and implementation coupled with explicit teaching has supported the students in attaining personal goals and developing their writing skills across key learning areas including Science, History and English. Teachers successfully shared and celebrated the learning journey with a community of schools that also participated in the project at State office. Congratulations to William Gemmell KR for showing curiosity and expanding on his independent writing. Writing samples can be viewed on the Writer’s Wall of Fame near the School Office.

CHATTERBOX 2020 As from 2020, the school newsletter, ‘Chatterbox’, will no longer be printed and sent home with the eldest child. This decision has been taken to conserve the amount of paper that has been used for printing on a fortnightly basis. Chatterbox is available on the School Website and posted on Skoolbag every second Thursday of the school term (even weeks). Minimal printed copies will still be available from the School Office. Please contact the office if you require a hard copy.

SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR Schools Spectacular is an outstanding showcase of the talent in NSW public schools. On Friday, 22 and Saturday, 23 November, Ms Morris, Miss King and Ms Skinner had the absolute pleasure of accompanying 21 students from Panania Public School so they could perform in this fantastic show. These selected students performed at Qudos Arena with approximately 5300 other students. After many mornings of early starts, late finishes and all day rehearsing the students demonstrated resilience and perseverance and did Panania Public School extremely proud. They have all created memories that will last a lifetime! Thank you to all parents who supported their children. Your commitment and dedication towards this event is extremely valued and appreciated and without your support, this experience would not have been possible. Panania Public School is Spectacular! Congratulations to all four Softball & T-ball teams in Season 3 PSSA Competition. The boys played Panania North with the Senior boys winning 14-1 and the T- ballers winning 22-8. Both the girls teams played Revesby South PS with the Senior girls winning 14-8 and the T-ballers winning 19-15. SYDNEY SOUTH WEST BLUES AWARD DINNER

Last night Mrs Rowland and Mr Dodd attended the annual SSW Blues Award dinner to honour those students who have excelled in sport throughout the year. To receive this prestigious award you need to represent SSW in at least 2 sporting teams and a NSW team. Rhys Parmeter from Year 5 was awarded a BLUES Award for his outstanding achievements in SSW Cross Country, Boys Touch, Rugby League, Boys Football, Swimming and the NSW Boys Softball Team. What a fantastic achievement!! Congratulations Rhys!!

GIRLS AND BOYS SOFTBALL KNOCKOUT

Congratulations to the Boys and Girls Softball Knockout teams who were successful against Tocumwal PS (Girls) 12-2 and Jerrabomberra PS (Boys) 15-13 in the quarter finals of the NSWPSSA Softball Knockout Championships earlier this term.

On Thursday, 5 December both teams will play at Blacktown International Sports Park in the Finals Day firstly playing Newport PS in the Semi Finals and then hopefully move onto the Grand Final.

The teams have trained consistently all year to reach this point in the NSW PSSA competition.

Best of luck to both teams.

TEACHERS IN THE MAKING Last week students in 4ST took the initiative, asking if they could be the teachers for a day. They prepared the lessons and worksheets and organised a timetable to follow. Isabella, Ava and Ethan provided reading, listening and writing activities on Harry Potter. Their classmates were engaged, working in groups to answer quiz questions, which were marked and stamped with feedback given. This was a great effort and most successful day. This week, Jackson planned a day of creating artworks and researching famous artists, with one (Pablo Picasso) chosen to study. Students completed an example of cubism and a symmetrical Christmas bauble and all were very proud of their achievements. Well done Jackson! Next week, Piper, Tommy, Tyler and Kiran will be conducting maths groups, each specialising in a particular strand and supplying relevant tasks to be enjoyed and completed. Our final teacher/learner activity will be a directed drawing lesson led by Ben and Cooper. This project has been an excellent opportunity to lead, collaborate, respect and communicate. Congratulations 4ST for approaching all tasks with such a positive growth mindset. Mrs P Sherring & Miss M Thyrd, Class Teachers.

SCHOOL BANKING

The last day for Student Banking for 2019 will be Tuesday, 10 December. Students can continue to bank during the holidays at their local branch to accumulate award tokens. Thank you for your support during the year and we look forward to continuing the School Banking Program in 2020.
