PRINCIPAL’S REPORT…. Winter has well and truly arrived and with it some cool, windy weather. The students are looking smart in their winter uniforms but, as each day warms, jumpers and jackets are removed and sometimes (often!) left lying around the school grounds. Could I please request that uniform items are labelled for ease of return to the owner? Another request I need to make is, once again, related to parking around the school. Our neighbours along Picnic Point Road have expressed concern that parents are parking across or obstructing driveways. This is compounded when the vehicle is a large 4WD or has a tow bar. One neighbour has been parked out of her home on several occasions. Our neighbours support us in keeping the school safe out of hours. We need to support them to be able to come and go from their residences when they need to. Your consideration in this matter is really appreciated. We have just ordered new signs for the driveway gates in Lambeth St to more clearly display that this is a “no go” area for pedestrians and vehicles. Despite repeated messages, pleas, requests and directives this is still being abused. We care about the safety of all our students and their parents/carers….we care about you too and must/will continue to reinforce out of bounds areas. Later in this edition of Chatterbox there is a Canteen Update. I wanted to acknowledge the superb efforts of the Canteen Committee and the new Canteen Manager, Sally Rowell, in raising the profile of the School Canteen, involving the community in a consultative way and involving the student body in decision making - all while trying very hard to comply with the new government directions in terms of “healthy foods.” Well done to all involved. I also love that the Canteen is regularly using produce from our Warami Garden…the food cycle in action!!! Finally, I am so thrilled that the K-2 and Years 3-6 Dance Groups have both been accepted in to the School Spectacular this year. This is a very prestigious event with a huge commitment required from students, their parents/carers and the school; but which the students will thoroughly enjoy. The P&C have kindly agreed to fund a mini bus to take the students to the 3 combined rehearsals in October/November. All other travel will be by train. Well done to the students selected and the staff involved….Mrs Nott, Mrs Skinner, Mrs Sherring and, of course, Miss Farrell. I look forward to attending this event once again in November. With my best wishes Sandra Palmer. Congratulations to Imogen Collis 6R, who has been accepted as a vocalist into the Junior State Music Camp, run through the NSW Department of Education Arts Unit. The camp is held from Sunday 22 July – Friday 27 July 2018 (Term 3, Week 1) at the Sydney Academy of Sport at Narrabeen. Congratulations to Lincoln Parmeter 6R and Matt Cooper 5/6P who have been selected in the Sydney South West Boys Softball Team playing at Kelso Park for the NSW Championships. Congratulations to Aleah Fulton 6S, Lily Thompson 6R and Crystal Woods 6R who have been selected in the Sydney South West Girls Softball Team travelling to Mudgee for the NSW Championships. LEARNING and SUPPORT UPDATE The cyclical nature of the school year is brought to mind each time I need to insert a paragraph as a way of communicating an important “event” or “compliance” to the school community. The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) for School Students with Disability is one of these. It is an annual collection which counts the number of school students with a disability and the level of reasonable educational adjustment they are provided with. The aim of the NCCD is to provide information which will lead to additional funding so that we can better target and support students who have additional learning and support needs at our school; and schools across Australia. It is imperative that we undertake this process with rigour so that our students have the reasonable adjustments necessary for them to take part in school on the same basis as students without disability. The definition of “disability” for the NCCD is very broad. Students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia or auditory processing disorder as well as chronic health conditions like anaphylaxis, epilepsy, diabetes or asthma, that requires active monitoring by the school, may be included. As principal, I am responsible for ensuring that the information identified about each student is accurate and that the privacy and confidentiality of all students and their families is ensured. Personal details will not be provided at the point of collection. This data translates.

EDUCATION WEEK & BOOK FAIR Just a friendly reminder that Panania will be holding a Book Fair and a Book Character Parade on our school Open Day on Wednesday, 8 August.

In the meantime we want to give parents/carers and students time to think about some ideas and prepare for the event. There are so many characters that students and teachers could “dress up” as on the day from both fiction and non-fiction books that it is sure to be a wonderful event.

GRIP Leadership Conference 2018

STUDENT LEADERSHIP DAY On Wednesday, 30 May our student leaders participated in a Panania Public School Leadership session. Taliah Vajdevski, Kallie Thompson and Sebastian Crowther, all very enthusiastic students, developed, coordinated and ran this session. Attendees included: The Year 6 Leadership Team, SRC members, Sport House Captains and Vice Captains and Flag Monitors.

This “project” was decided upon at a leadership workshop they attended earlier in the year at Tower Street Public School. A range of activities to develop leadership and teamwork within PPS, including teamwork bonding exercises, a think-tank of ideas to better our school and even a Q & A with Mrs Palmer, were highlights.

The presenters of this workshop did an amazing job. They were knowledgeable, prepared and engaging. The attendants were all respectful and motivated to learn and improve our wonderful school. Well done to all involved! Mrs G Deering, SRC Coordinator.

HEALTH MATTERS This section of Chatterbox will be a regular feature, once again, over the coming weeks. We belong to Live Life Well @ School which is a joint initiative between the Department of Education and the Ministry of Health in NSW. The program promotes a whole school approach to physical activity and nutrition, aims to get more students more active more often and focuses on developing healthy eating habits. Please note, we are not preaching to you rather we are providing information.

BOOK CLUB Scholastic Book Club brochures have been sent home this week. Online orders must be submitted via the Scholastic ‘Loop’ system. Any orders with cash payments need to be returned to the Drop Box at the School Office by Thursday, 14 June. Thanking you for your support. Miss C Archibald, Book Club Coordinator.

Value of the Fortnight Democracy

Please support us at home by having discussions with your child/children about what ‘Democracy’ means at home, at school and in the community.

JUNIOR NETBALL Junior A Team – Having been undefeated all season the girls were up against an extremely tough and competitive team, Revesby South Public School. Both teams came out ready to play and firing, as the score remained tight throughout the whole match. All the girls played competitively, demonstrating fantastic perseverance and resilience. The final score was 11-11, which means both teams are joint Premiers. Well done! Junior B Team – What a fantastic season of netball by the Junior B team! Also undefeated the girls were excited and enthusiastic about playing in their first PSSA grand final against Padstow North Public School. Such an enjoyable game to watch with all girls playing with respect for each other and tremendous sportsmanship! Fortunately for us we came away with a win with the final score being 5-3. What an amazing achievement! All girls demonstrated teamwork and leadership throughout the season. Congratulations to you all, I am extremely proud of each and every one of you! Ms B Skinner Netball Coach.

Junior Netball Teams

SENIOR NETBALL Both the Senior A and Senior B Netball Teams competed in the semi-finals this year with the Senior B continuing on to play and win the final. There they displayed skills and team work to become Senior B Premiers for 2018. Congratulations girls! The East Hills District Netball Trials were held at Clarke Reserve. Representing our school were Rachel Barbey, Kiara Brackley, Illiana Naumovski and Taliah Vajdevski. Kiara and Taliah participated in a “Possible/Probable” team playoff with Taliah being selected for the District Netball team which will compete at the Regional Carnival. Miss M Parkes Senior Netball Coach.

Senior Netball B Team

RUGBY LEAGUE GRAND FINALS Congratulations to the boys and girls in the PSSA Rugby League teams on their outstanding season. With both the Junior and Senior Teams being undefeated leading into the grand finals, expectations were high. Unfortunately, the Junior team were runners up, beaten by Panania North 12-10. It was extremely close with both teams scoring 2 tries. Goals were the only difference. It was very pleasing to see their “never give up” attitude and sportsmanship in defeat. The Senior Team played well against Padstow Park Public School, winning 30-24 making them Premiers. Every player contributed to the team’s success and this fantastic achievement. It was a pleasure to coach the teams and watch the development of the many inexperienced players and the leadership of those more skilled. In particular the Junior Girls – Makayla, Ryleigh, Hadlee and Alyssa who gained confidence with every game. Thanks also to the many parents and grandparents who attended each game and supported the children in such a positive way. Mr B Dodd Rugby League Coach.

RULE OF THE FORTNIGHT The rule we are focusing on for

Term 2, Weeks 7 & 8 is:

Be Respectful

You can support us at home by having discussions with your child/children about what “Being respectful” means and what this rule means in different settings.

CANTEEN UPDATE

Thank you for the overwhelming response we have received from parents who responded to the School Canteen Survey. We were very pleased to have over one third of the parent body complete the survey. The results have been analysed and are being used to guide our current review of the operation of our school canteen and to update our school canteen menu.

In addition, the Student Representative Council has consulted the student population regarding their current favourite items as well as suggestions for new food items. This feedback will also be used to inform our current review. Students were also asked to make suggestions for a canteen name and they have selected one that will be announced later on this year... watch this space! An update of the above community feedback and current review of the school canteen's operation and menu was also presented to the P&C Committee last Monday night for further consultation. In addition to community consultation, the current review of the school canteen is in line with the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy that all NSW public schools are required to transition to over a three-year period (2017-2019). The new NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy is about increasing the availability of healthy food and drink options in school canteens to make the healthy choice, the easy choice for students. For more information please visit https://healthyschoolcanteens.nsw.gov.au

TERM 2 UPDATE there have been some taste test days at the

school canteen. Some lucky students have already had the chance to taste test chicken soup or porcupine meatballs.

watch out for a note with some tasty winter specials

the lemonade tree from the school's garden has been in abundance with 'lemonade fruit' being sold at the canteen for 10 cents a piece

a reminder to hand in your note if you can volunteer at the athletics carnival in the canteen or alternatively email [email protected]
