CHATSWORTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

Admissions Guide 2019/20

Welcome.Chatsworth International School has a strong history in Singapore, dating back to 1995. The school is a product of a handful of teachers and students founding the school in Upper Serangoon back then. Over the past two decades, as a group, we have had a presence in different parts of Singapore and are now excited about consolidating the school community at Bukit Timah come August 2020.

Chatsworth provides each student with a challenging academic experience, with foundations in traditional education while at the same time ensuring our students are prepared with 21st century skills for a balanced and successful future as global citizens. Our highly qualified and dedicated staff come from all over the world to offer students a truly international education. Our small class sizes allow them to be heard and express themselves, gain confidence, think critically and globally and be recognized for their individual talents while at the same time maintaining our overall importance of community.

I am privileged to be serving as Head of Schools, with its emphasis and strong reputation for community, pastoral care and holistic education. I welcome you to schedule time to visit our school and experience for yourself Chatsworth’s thriving community.

We use the IB Learner Profile in everything

we do at Chatsworth. Students as well as

staff are encouraged to recognise and support

these attributes with everyone in our

community.

Years 3 to 6 (Junior Years)

The Junior Years at Chatsworth give students a chance to shine and grow as individual learners.

The skills and attributes developed in the Early Years are immediately put to use, with students taking ownership of their learning, creating rich inquiries and achieving personal and academic goals.

Junior Years students mature as leaders, taking responsibility for school projects, action groups and community events.

The final year of Junior Years culminates in a PYP Exhibition, a powerful celebration and showcase of student learning and development.

PrimaryKindergarten to Year 2 (Early Years)

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) provides the foundation for our international curriculum, incorporating skills, attitudes, units of inquiry, concepts and the Learner Profile. It is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3 to 12.

The early years of a child’s education is vital to their future success, setting foundations academically as well

as personally and socially. We recognise that each child is unique, tailoring learning through careful observation and documentation of student progress.

Our classrooms and learning environments are carefully resourced to enrich learning opportunities for students. The early years classrooms

follow a play-based curriculum, acknowledging the social and emotional development that takes place when students participate in uninterrupted and purposeful play.

One of my favourite subjects is Mathematics.

This is because you can manipulate an

extremely complicated equation into a simpler one by using a range of

techniques.

SecondaryMiddle Years (Years 7 to 11)

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) provides a framework of learning that encourages students to be creative, critical and reflective thinkers.

The MYP emphasises intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between

their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global encouragement - essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders.

Theo Bockenmeyer, Middle School Student

The MYP offers subjects from eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents.

Through the final two years of the MYP, Years 10 and 11, students complete the Personal Project. The Personal Project is a year-long independent research project undertaken by all final-year MYP students. All MYP students take part in Service as Action as well.

Service Learning is an integral part of the MYP and life at Chatsworth. Service Learning starts in the classroom and extends beyond it.

Throughout the MYP, students are encouraged to make connections between the things they learn at school and in their surroundings, as well as thinking about what they can give to the community and the benefits the community can bring to them.

Having gained awareness about the community, the next step is to take action and to become involved in Service Learning activities and projects. With a dozen Service Learning Groups focusing on different topics/ issues, there are lots of opportunities for students to further enrich learning through service action.

14 15

IB is challenging, but you realise your true potential during this time. The skillset that

I gained during IB has been very useful

and has helped me at university.

SecondaryHigh School (Years 12 to 13)

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) offers a broad and rigorous internationally-minded curriculum and is the basis of study for the final two years at Chatsworth. The programme is designed to prepare students for further education at the tertiary level. In addition to the IB Diploma certificate, high school students will be awarded with the

WASC-accredited Chatsworth High School Diploma, subject to satisfying the credit and other requirements, that are tracked from Year 10 through Year 13.

Students are offered the opportunity to take one of school selected Pamoja online courses.

Anjali Goyal, Class of 2015

Subjects undertaken through Pamoja follow the full IB curriculum and assessment model. Students will be able to learn with independence, space and control over their own learning, with the assistance of Pamoja- based teacher who will deliver the content and assessment.

The offering of Pamoja courses will afford students greater choice in the study of languages and humanities subjects, and provides a progressive and flexible manner of study.

Reese and Hannah, Middle School Students

We worked with Food Bank Singapore where we organised a food drive to collect food to be passed onto people in need of assistance

in Singapore. Apart from collecting the food, we also raised self-awareness of issues relating to food poverty and hunger.

Creativity, Action and Service

Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) is the very heart of the Years 12 and 13 at Chatsworth.

The school very much believes in the education of the whole student and CAS reflects the importance of having a balanced lifestyle that incorporates creative and physical pursuits in addition to helping others, especially the less fortunate.

All students must satisfy the requirements of CAS in order to be awarded the IB Diploma.

16 17

Student Leadership

Within Chatsworth, all students and staff are divided into 3 Houses: Changi, Sentosa and Raffles, named after iconic landmarks in Singapore.

Houses are split vertically throughout the school so each House will have Primary, Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary students within it.

The house system, embedded into different aspects of school life, is used to promote school spirit and a sense of belonging.

Students will be able to develop their leadership and collaboration skills through the House system and Student Council, both aimed at making the school year more welcoming and engaging.

Ella and Seoyun, House Captains (2018-19)

Serving the Chatsworth community has been very fun. We have had the opportunity to present at plenty of assemblies and even hosted house events

such as Kindness Week, the ultimate soccer competition, dodgebee and dodgeball. We collaborated with the class reps to generate ideas about fun

things to do at school.

Residential Trips and Excursions Our local environment is a powerful resource and in order to enrich learning, field trips will take place regularly during the year to support our units of inquiry. Additionally, students from Years 4 to 6 attend a one-night, two-night and three-night camps or residential

trips. Such trips provide a great opportunity for students to become more independent and manage themselves.

At the Secondary School, students in some year levels may travel overseas to participate in new adventures and

gain experiences from visiting other cultures, as part of our Curriculum Enhancement Week.

Romane & PrabhaPrimary Students

What an adventure! We learnt about mother nature’s beauty and not to

be scared during the night walk. We had to look after ourselves and our

belongings. It was so much fun.

18 19

In academic year 2018-19, an approximate 300 students played close to 350 games/meets bringing home three gold, four silver and five bronze medals - that’s pretty impressive for a small to mid-sized school!

Athletics The goal of athletics or sports at Chatsworth is to develop a commitment to lifelong physical fitness, life skills such as teamwork, effective communication and leadership.

Chatsworth is an active member of the Athletic Conference Singapore

International Schools (ACSIS), which consists of 30 member schools. With a modest student population, we provide equal opportunities for students to be fielded across various sports teams and age groups. ACSIS runs three seasons between August and May in each academic year. Our students from Year 3 through Year

13 have the opportunity to compete in basketball, badminton, soccer, cross country running, swimming, ultimate frisbee, touch rugby and netball.

Go Phoenix!

CCAs and ECAs Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) and External Curricular Activities (ECAs) are an important part of school life. These activities provide opportunities for students to participate in team-based sports,

discover new passions, develop social skills, play together and, most importantly, have fun! While all teachers at Chatsworth are involved in leading and/or supporting CCAs, the ECAs are run

by external providers and there will be something to cater to every interest.

More than 40 CCAs and team-based sports are offered in each of our three seasons each school year. From languages to services to STEM-related activities to recreational sports and performing arts, there are abundant opportunities for students to enrich their school life.

20 21

The ArtsFrom visual arts to drama or school musicals to heaps of arts-related CCAs and events, there are abundant opportunities for Chatsworth students to discover and hone their artistic talents and interests. It’s all about holistic education, and the arts is an integral part of such an approach.

We have passionate teachers and educators who are involved

in the community, playing piano professionally, performing their own songs and covers in live bands, recording and mixing music, singing in choirs, directing and acting in local theatre. The love we have for our art forms is well communicated to our students.

Each year, our students continue to wow us with their many talents, from Arts Nights and participation

in the IN Art Exhibition at the Australian High Commission, from self-directed Art exhibitions to school productions and dance competitions etc. Art gallery visits and music field-trips are also organised to further broaden students’ learning.

I’m part of the High School musical production show, talent show, vocal ensemble CCA and Primary honour

choir. These activities give me a chance to practice and hone my

musical and acting skills outside of class. I enjoy spending time with my friends and interacting with people

outside my year group.

Imogen Shelly, High School student

Improving student welfare and providing the support services students need to improve their academic performance and social development are the mission of our Student Services team.

Technology

Today, technology integration with an established curriculum is “best practice” in the 21st Century classroom.

At Chatsworth, our goal is to promote a balanced use of technology to motivate our students to develop deeper conceptual understandings, ask meaningful questions and cultivate transferable skills that they continually adapt to approach challenges in their lives today and in the future.

We are an Apple and Google school with a 1:1 laptop program running from Year 4 upwards and iPads and Chromebooks in younger years.

English as an Additional Language

A supportive EAL (English as an Additional Language) programme is available to students who need help with their acquisition of English from Years 1 to 11.

Our immediate goal is to support the students in the mainstream classes and help them fully respond to the tasks and expectations of the homeroom. At the same time, we are augmenting and supporting their acquisition of English in general, making a solid base for their further independent development.

Students will take an assessment to determine their language needs and entry level in the EAL programme.

Chatsworth ScholarshipAt Chatsworth, we believe in nurturing and empowering young talents to achieve success in what they do, with some financial freedom.

We offer offer a number of full High School Scholarships to outstanding students on our two-

year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) at the start of each new academic year

The Scholarship award, which pays 100% tuition fee along with a MacBook, will be awarded to a limited number of students on a merit basis.

The Chatsworth scholarship helped to relieve my family’s financial burden. It also taught me a sense of responsibility and helped me to maintain high

expectations for myself.
