Because of God’s Abundant Grace
Our Stewardship theme this fall is “Because of God’s Abundant Grace” We are celebrating the 500th
Anniversary of the Reformation in which the exceeding grace of God was proclaimed: We are saved by grace!!
Our relationship with God always begins with “BECAUSE”. Because of all that God has done for us. God’s
mercy is always first. Everything we do is a response of gratitude and generosity. Because of God’s Abundant
Grace, Therefore we are free to love and serve in gratitude and generosity. We give, because God first gave
to us. And we give through the church to our children, to our families, to our elders, to our neighbors, to the
hungry, to the powerless, to all the world. Thank you for your generosity, because of God’s abundant grace.

A Word from Pastor Nissa
Faith Formation is for everyone!
As September approaches, we are busy planning for Faith for-
mation programs in the Fall! Pastor Mark and I get so excited
coming up with creative, fun, and meaningful ways to share
God’s love and teach about faith to this congregation. But we
know that as awesome as our lessons might be, learning about
faith is something much bigger than a Wednesday night or Sun-
day morning!
Faith formation is for everyone!
God is always creating in us! Young kids go to Sunday school,
youth go to Confirmation, high schoolers go to youth group- but
even after youth programs are over, faith formation is never done!
God always has something to teach us about the Bible, about our
faith, and about God.
Faith formation happens at church!
Chatfield Lutheran is committed to helping all people learn about
God! We do that through Sunday school, Confirmation, youth pro-
grams, Bible studies, VBS, and all the activities we do as a
church! But a big part of how we support faith formation is by
equipping families to do faith formation at home.
Faith formation happens at home!
Parents and families have the biggest impact on faith! More than
the pastors, more than friends, more than Sunday school. Faith
formation happens at home when families pray before meals,
pray at bedtime, and talk about where God is in your lives. Talk-
ing about your day and reminding each other that you are loved
by God and loved by the family is how we grow in our faith!
Faith formation happens everywhere!
Living out faith happens everywhere we go! We learn about God
and our faith when we do a service project at school, when we
stand up to a bully, when we buy an extra item from the grocery
store for the food shelf. We can share God’s love by our kind-
ness, our sharing, and even cleaning our rooms! God is all around us every day, so every moment we can share
and know God’s love!
God’s blessings to you and your family as you share, read, talk, pray, and bless each other in the name of God!
Peace be yours, Pastor Nissa
Faith 5 The Faith 5 is a simple, meaningful way
to share and grow faith in families.
Practice these 5 habits every night- as a
family before bed, at the dinner table, or
on the phone with grandma. Something
as simple as a loving conversation,
prayer, and blessing will help everyone
in the family to grow closer to God and
each other!
Share
Share your highs and lows-
what happened today?
Read
Read a Bible verse or story.
Talk
Talk about the Bible reading-
what is God up to? How does
that reading relate to your highs
and lows?
Pray
Say a prayer for everyone’s
highs and lows. In the name of
Jesus, Amen!
Bless
Bless each other! Make the sign
of the cross, and tell everyone
that they are loved by God!

From Pastor Mark
During vacation, I came across a great book on prayer by Anne Lamont: Help, Thank, Wow. Those three words pretty well sum up prayer. I would invite all of us to focus on these three words during the coming months as a way to renew our prayer life. Prayer is one of those spiritual practices that don’t have any special techniques to get better at it. We just have to pray. But these three aspects of prayer: Help, Thanks, Wow can give us a way to focus on practice.
Prayer finds it anchor and focus in the Sunday Lord’s Supper with the faith community—that holy supper in which we take God into ourselves by eating the Body and Blood of Christ. All prayer springs from that union on Sunday and eagerly anticipates our Communion on the next Sunday.
Anne Lamont writes: “Prayer is about getting outside of your own self and hooking into something greater than that very, very limited part of our experience here—the ticker tape of thoughts and solu-tions, and trying to figure out who to blame.” Prayer is about connecting to who and what is al-ways more.
Help
People say 'help' without actually believing anything hears that. But it is the great prayer, and it is the hardest prayer, because you have to admit defeat — you have to surrender, which is the hardest thing any of us do, ever. A lot of the time we don't know when we're surrendering that we're actually, at the same time, maybe establishing connection ... to a power greater than ourselves — or some-thing in the next concentric circle out whose name is not me. So, that to me is where help begins.
Thanks
"Thanks is the prayer of relief that help was on the way. ... It can be [the] pettiest, dumbest thing, but it could also be that you get the phone call that the diagnosis was much, much, much better than you had been fearing. ... The full prayer, and its entirety, is: Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you.” The thanks may be the grateful reception of Jesus’ steadfast love in the midst of terrible suffering and the hope against hope that such love will make all things work together for good. The thanks may be the experience of grace in the midst of the crosses of life.
Wow
"Wow is the praise prayer. Wow is the prayer of wonder. It's sort of like blinking your eyes open. ... It's sort of like when the Wizard of Oz first — when Dorothy lands in Oz and the movie goes from black and white to color, and it's like having a new pair of glasses, and you say, 'Wow!”
Wow happens to me when I receive Holy Communion, when someone prays over me, when we sing “Lift High the Cross,” when Lois says “I love you,” when I hike in the mountains, when someone surprises me with kindness, and when prayer opens me up to see the Wow’s all around.

Pastoral Sabbatical
What is a sabbatical? A sabbatical is a time of focus in-depth on things that are important to a person’s work and life with the church. The SE MN Synod recommends sabbaticals for pastors after six years of service in order to enhance and renew a congregation’s ministry. The Chatfield Lutheran executive council is working with Pastor Mark to set up a sabbatical in May-July of 2018. This would include attending a preaching workshop, a study program on metaphor and poetry as it informs preaching and science, work-ing/studying/community living at Holden Village (an intentional Christian community and retreat center), and hiking a part of the Pacific Crest Trail. Per Synod guidelines, this sabbatical will provide Pastor Mark with time for intentional reflection, rekindling the spirit, and deepening spiritual life and family relationships.
Beginning with the Bible’s story of creation, and quietly echoing down through all the generations and com-munities of God’s people, is the concept of Sabbath which is the rhythm of work and rest and how the wholeness of life is to be found in that harmony. Those who study parish ministry have found that healthy pastorates (especially those of longer duration) require that attention be paid to his “sabbatical” rhythm. This is vital for the health, both of the pastor and the parish, is to be maintained. The pastoral vocation is unique in the emotional highs and lows that accompany it as well as the difficulty to have an “off” switch with being on 24-hour call. The synod’s sabbatical program is designed to offer refreshment and renewal for the whole ministry of the congregation. A sabbatical for the pastor can provide time to focus on reading, writing, preaching and prayer. It will also provide an opportunity for congregational members to exercise their gifts for ministry for the good of one another and the gospel. A sabbatical will benefit the congregation as Pastor Mark will engage the congregation in faith conversations and worship, centered around the verbs in the Words of Institution in the Lord’s Supper (chosen, blessed, broken, given, eat, drink). Pastor Mark sees this as a new way of seeing and following Jesus. The hope is that it will also give new ways to address faith with those engaged in science and medicine.
Finalizing a sabbatical plan will include a process to provide Pastor Nissa support during the sabbatical. The executive council will keep the congregation informed in the coming months
Sunday Morning Coffee Bible Study begins Sunday. September 10th, 9:15 in the conference room. We will looking at the study “We make the road by walking.” All are invited.
Intergenerational Vacation Bible School Report
On Aug 6-9 Sugar Creek led an Intergenerational Day(evening) camp. We met for supper at 5:30. Thanks to volunteers that helped with cooking and clean –up We started with a short worship led by Sugar Creek. Then parents with young children met with Pastor Nissa for Bible story and activities. Elementary youth meet with the the Sugar Creek Counselors, and adults of all ages that were not needing to be with their children met with me for Bible study and faith activities. We probably averaged about 45 participants with one night as high as 57. It was a great time and truly one of the best things we have done in our ministry. Thanks for all that made it happen. We really enjoyed having intergenerational faith experiences together.

The Lord’s Supper-Opening the Future
We continue our journey through the Small Catechism. This month we being to look at the Lord’s
Supper and read the words from “Free to Be” by Gerhard Forde and James Nestigen.
Forgiveness packs all the power of God’s promise. It is God’s barrier-breaking, future-opening gift.
“For where there is forgiveness of sins, “ as Luther’s explanation says, “there is also life and salva-
tion.” It is next best to being raised from the dead.
All kinds of things can make barriers between people. People who dislike you try to have as little to
do with you as possible. Then you don’t have any future with them. If you return the dislike, the cir-
cle is completed. The only other way to break the circle is through forgiveness. It doesn’t just stop
the circle; forgiveness breaks it up entirely, clearing away the barriers and opening up the future
again.
One of the barriers that can come between God and us is our own guilt. Shame is another barrier.
Even our little worries can block the way. When God speaks the Word of forgiveness to you, God
takes the axe to those barriers and shatters and splinters them into a million pieces.
“This is my body,” he says “given for you.” “This cup is the new covenant
(testament) in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.”
It is as if Christ says “here I am, right here, with you. All of your guilt is destroyed.
Everything that you’ve done and failed to do is wiped out. I accept you, without
condition.” The old Adam or Eve dies on these words.
With the barriers destroyed, ,the future opens up to you.
But there’s one more question: How can eating and drinking bread and wine knock down barriers
and open up the future? It’s through the Word that all the gifts come “Given and shed for you.”
Christ says, For you. Hearing these words as you can eat the bread and drink the wine, you can be
certain that all of Christ’s gifts are meant for you.
The old self says that the sacrament works no matter what we do. Here the sacraments become
something you do so that you’ll be immune from whatever evil you may get caught in. You get bap-
tized or go to Communion once in a while and then you can do whatever you want to. What God
does in the sacraments has to take a backseat to whatever the old you wants to get away with. But the Lord’s Supper is always about what God is doing for us and in us and through us.
When the Lord’s Supper is recognized for what it is-- -the Lord’s Supper, Christ’s gift to us---
everything changes. Because it’s a gift, there is nothing you have to do to receive it. But because
the Lord’s Supper is such a great gift, there might be some things you want to do just to get ready
for it.
That’s why the Lord’s Supper can also be called the Eucharist, “the thanksgiving.”

are to be found in a corner of the council meeting room (the old choir room). There are a few clas-
sics, heritage books, devotionals and non fiction. Most of the youth and children's books are found in the
book case in the cozy corner of the new gathering area, near the parking lot door, for easy access. A
few adult books will be featured on the top of the youth bookcase. A few new books may be added from
time to time. When you borrow a book, you may leave the library card, or borrow it on the honor system.
Check it out. Happy reading!

ment, with no change of circumstances! The simple practice, that she discovered, changed it all.

The ELCA Youth Gathering will be happening in Houston June 27-
July 1, 2018. The Gathering theme, “This Changes Everything,” is cen-
tered in Ephesians 2:8, “For by grace you have been saved through faith,
and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”
Together, youth and adults will discuss grace and how this gift changes
lives and perspectives. The primary focus of the Gathering is faith for-
mation of young people.
Through days spent together in interactive learning, Bible study, worship,
service and fellowship, young people grow in faith—challenged and in-
spired to live their faith in daily life.
As young people desire and struggle to find someone to become, somewhere to belong and something
to do, the Gathering seeks to be a ministry that helps define some of that or at least open pathways of
discovery. Ultimately, the vision is for youth to understand the fierce love that God has for them, just as
they are, and that by grace, through faith, they have been saved. When a young person—or anyone—
claims this reality, it changes everything.
Congregational registration opens Sept. 15, 2017, and will close on May 15, 2018. For more infor-
mation on the Gathering, visit ELCA.org/gathering. For all questions or concerns, please contact the
Gathering office at [email protected]. See you in Houston!
Parent and Youth Youth Gathering informational meeting will take place September 17th at
11:30am to discuss and determine interest. This would be done in place of a mission trip. We
hope to incorporate some service work into the trip.
Parent and Littles Sunday School starting this Fall! Parents and little ones too young for Sunday school are welcome to a new parent and child group! Par-ents and Little School (PALS) is for parents and kids under the age of 3. We will meet the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month in the play room. The first meeting is September 24th at 9:15am! The focus will be on fellowship and play! Kids can plan, cry, eat, and run while parents support one another and share about how they build faith in their families. Grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends, or any other beloved adults are welcome to bring little ones. Please see Pastor Nissa with any questions! On behalf of the Property Committee, I would like to thank the many helping hands that were pre-
sent throughout the summer helping with the landscaping duties. This will continue to be a work in pro-
gress as we grow grass, add trees, and add a fire pit (a community project by one of our student con-
gregation members). Many individuals played a big part in the planning and installation of the land-
scaping. There are too many helpers to name individually, still I would like to thank each and every one
of you! We would not have made our goal of being done by Rally Sunday without you. A special thinks
to Wayne and Kathy Halvorson for many reason but mostly for their many trips to Rochester for sup-
plies , and to Vern Crowson for his additionally hours with watering and other duties that enabled us to
continue moving forward. Also, many thanks to those of you that applied for Thrivent funds and took a
significant load off the cost of the project. God bless! Al Neis, Property Committee Chairman.
