CONFIRMATION POLICY: Except for Special Programs (course numbers which begin with “SP”) and limited

enrollment courses (as specified herein), please consider yourself confirmed for all courses for which you

register. You will receive confirmation for all “SP” and limited enrollment courses. Early enrollment is strongly

recommended for such courses as they tend to fill quickly. All Renaissance Academy courses are filled on a first-

come, first-served basis.

CANCELLATION POLICY: If a class is canceled, you will be notified by phone and issued a full refund within 30

business days. If you wish to withdraw from a class, please notify the Renaissance Academy at 941-505-0130 no

later than 5:00 pm three (3) business days prior to the first session of the class in order to receive a refund.

Individuals who cancel after the start of the class will not receive a refund. Unless otherwise stated, a fourteen

(14) business day notice is required for refunds on all special programs (SP).

Tai Chi: “Meditation in Motion” for Better Health $45 Series/$7 per class

The gentle, flowing movements of Tai Chi promote better health, leg strength, and an overall feeling of well-being, according

to the Mayo Clinic. The rhythmic movements and controlled breathing of Tai Chi, or “meditation in motion,” requires

practitioners to live in the present, thereby reducing stress and producing an inner calm. Tai Chi is low impact, reduces blood

Little things mean a lot in the world of 10-year-old Mui, a girl who's trained to be a house servant in 1950s Vietnam.

This film follows Mui as she grows up in pre-war Saigon, and finds quiet love with a family friend. Dialogue seems

almost tertiary in this film that celebrates the senses, as the young girl discovers the world around her and marvels at

every new sight, sound and scent she experiences while going about her workday life.

This politically infused comedy follows the crusade of Baya, a left-wing femme fatale who seeks to rescue right-

The Mayima family is seeking a husband for their daughter, Noriko (Setsuko Hara), but she has ideas of her own.

Noriko impulsively chooses her childhood friend, at once fulfilling her family's desires while tearing them apart. A

seemingly simple story, this drama -- directed with great finesse by Yasujiro Ozu -- is in reality an emotionally

complex, nuanced examination of life's changes across three generations.

Not everyone desires to carry a firearm for protection. Self-Defense for Seniors is a non-combat program designed

specifically for these individuals presented by an NRA Certified instructor. You will explore common sense strategies and

non-traditional tools necessary for you to protect yourself and your family in an assault. You will learn about tools you

probably already have that should be with you at all times. Understand simple site analysis that can make the difference

between surviving an attack, being seriously injured, or worse. How to retreat, when and how to successfully hide and what

you can do if retreat is not an option. You will be able to identify weapons and understand their operation and weaknesses.

We will also examine the Florida Castle Rule, Stand Your Ground legislation and other legal issues associated with self-

On the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Civil War we will discuss the novel, "The Secrets of Mary Bowser", and learn the

little known stories of other African-American spies during the Civil War. The novel by Lois Leveen is based on a true story.

It is the inspirational tale of a daring woman's willingness to sacrifice her new freedom to change the course of history. Mary

Bowser poses as a slave in the Confederate White House in order to spy on President Jefferson Davis to aid the Union

Master director Yimou Zhang tackles an adaptation of the Coen brothers' classic Blood Simple in this period

dramedy full of slapstick and plot twists. When the owner of a Chinese noodle shop attempts to kill his adulterous

wife, the fireworks fly. The proprietor also hopes to eliminate his wife's woebegone lover, but complications and

high-flying action arise courtesy of a rampaging band of feudal soldiers and the shop's wacky employees.

Col. Sergei Kotov, his wife Maroussia and daughter Nadia are enjoying life at their beautiful country estate in

Stalinist Russia when a mysterious man arrives, shattering their hopes for a peaceful existence. Mitia, who once was

Maroussia's lover, seems perfectly charming at first - but it soon becomes clear he has a sinister agenda. Nikita

Mikhalkov's powerful portrait of viciousness during the Stalin era won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

A man who has traveled to Helsinki in search of work gets mugged, loses his memory and is forced to start his life

anew. Along the way, he finds love with a woman and discovers values he had never known. Finnish director Aki

Kaurismaki brings us a simple story about people who still know how to be gentle, a film that indicates a fine

awareness of tradition in relation to both Finnish and European cinema.

A romantic melodrama set in 1930s Budapest, Gloomy Sunday centers on a love triangle with tragic consequences.

Restaurant owner Laszlo hires pianist Andres to play in his restaurant. Both men fall in love with the beautiful

waitress Ilona, who inspires Andrees to write his only composition. The resulting song, Gloomy Sunday, is at first

loved by the public but soon, its melancholic melody appears to trigger a chain of suicides.

Conversations On Race: Slavery's Legacy_______________________________________ _____$40

Fifty years since the Civil Rights movement and despite the election of an African American president, America still grapples

with the issue of race. This series of conversations will address one of the root causes of this problem, historical stereotypes,

which in explicit and subtle ways continue to be a divisive factor in American society. In this four-week conversation we will

discuss 1) the creation, transmission, reinforcement of racial stereotypes; 2) the impact of stereotyping; 3) the mythical Black

HC0587-001 The Advantages of Forgiveness ________ $15 Thursday, November 7 at 10:00am–12:00pm (2 hours)

In 1995, investment banker Azim Kamisa's only son Tariq, a student at San Diego State University, was shot and

killed by a 14-year-old gang member as he was delivering pizzas for a part-time job. Since then, Kamisa has eased

his own pain by extending forgiveness to the killer and working with youth at risk. Could you do this? Could I? Or

are some acts so horrific that no forgiveness is possible? This lecture explores such questions, including the

emotional and even physical benefits of forgiving others as we would hope they would forgive us.

and then look forward with humor, good will, and even anticipation.

This is a unique class. This class will alternate between photographing in the field and processing photos in class. We will

start the first class by going on location and taking photos. (Location of November 18th class will be at the Historic Park on

Shreve Street in Punta Gorda.) Questions will be answered during this time for camera processes and composition. The

following class we will be using Adobe Photoshop Elements to process the photos. We will look at a wide array of options to

enhance or fix any areas that need attention. Workflow options, color management and more topics will be discussed. Any

type of camera is welcome. Students should have a basic understanding of how to use the computer, saving files, locating

files, opening files and launching applications. Laptops with Adobe Elements 11 will be available for use. Please bring USB

What is photography actually about...light. We will first explore how just a cheap piece of foam core will enhance your

photos. As the class progresses, we will move into using the external flash. There are ways to turn your external flash into the

"strobes" that the pro's use in the studio. What will you learn from this class? Have you ever wanted to take a "professional"

portrait of your family? Have you ever wanted to dive into beach photography, stock photography, sports photography? This

is for you!! You will get a notebook that has all of the information and lighting diagrams so you can recreate the results at

home. Class Requirements: Participants should already possess an understanding of shutter speed, ISO and aperture settings

on their camera. A camera that will shoot in manual mode (check your manual) and the camera body MUST have a hot shoe.

Does freedom of the press exist in China? Do First Amendment rights exist? What controls are in place governing

the media? This lecture will explore the untold story of media conditions and controls within present day China.

Constitutional rights and the struggle of the Chinese people under a restrictive and repressive system will be

examined. All forms of media will be covered including the gigantic growth of the Internet, social networks,

expansion of newspapers, and more. We will also examine the costs of such controls to the Chinese people and

government.

consciousness, or even souls?? This lecture explores the potentially dangerous impact of technological communication on

Discovering a New World in Panama ______________$15

Today eight indigenous tribes are officially recognized in Panama, representing about ten percent of the country's population.

Given its limited geography, it is remarkable that these tribes have been able to sustain a traditional life style. The

experiences of visitors on Panama tours are enriched by observing the traditional lifestyle of the indigenous populations in

different areas of the country. For four months, while living aboard our sailboat, we had the pleasure of spending time with

some of these tribes. Share our adventure in stories, pictures and artifacts. Instructors: Mr. and Mrs. Linehan

ballets for almost 40 years. She is also the director of the National League of Junior Cotillions in Charlotte and Lee Counties.

Dr. Alex Crandall is a retired psychiatrist with 35 years of experience in therapy, research and teaching.

Alberto Cruz is an artist whose evolution has been typical of a painter who builds on the best from the different stages of his work. His

style soon won him the acclaim of the best known pointillist in Venezuela.

Sharon Fultz is a Tai Chi practitioner and has been an instructor since 1995.

John Guerra a graduate of Columbia University and former Wall Street merchant banker, is the FGCU Director of Continuing Education.

Jacqueline Jolin is an education Specialist trained by eBay as well as a Top Rated Power Seller with over 1500 positive feedback ratings

and a 100% positive feedback score.

Rob and Sue Linehan have spent 10 winter seasons exploring the Caribbean on their 40 foot sailboat.

Erica Marcantoni received her Bachelor degree in Tourism Science (Tourism Management) at the university of Macerata, in 2012

Maestro Raffaele Ponti is known as an artist of dynamic personality, charismatic performances, and superb musicianship. Ponti’s

trademark is in the breadth of his vision, the clarity of his interpretation, and the rich beauty of his sound. He is the newly appointed

conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.

Spencer Pullen currently owns Premiere Graphics in Port Charlotte. He shoots pictures of everything from food for dining reviews in

local magazines to portraits.

Barbara Rendell has studied food, nutrition, wellness, and gardening over 36 years. Over this time she has been growing and preserving

her own foods.

Robert Rexroad is a national Rifle Association Certified Instructor, shooting coach and self-defense trainer. He is also the former

chairman of the Punta Gorda Revitilization Committee and senior marketer with the United Way.

Lee Stein learned the love of film from growing up in a family that owned a theater. He is the Executive Director on the Board of The

Charlotte Chorale.

Ralph Temple is a Chartered Life Underwriter with over forty years of experience in the area of member health and life insurance

programs. He currently provides advisory services especially for retirees and baby boomers.

Sharon Whitehill, Ph.D. earned her doctoral degree in Victorian literature, before spending more than 30 years as a professor of English
