Last RiverDogs Game: June 15 A night removed from putting six runs on the board Friday night, the RiverDogs couldn't find their rhythm at the plate and dropped Saturday night's contest to the Greenville Drive 5-1 in front of 4,993 at Joe Riley Park. Charleston's (36-33) lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when the first four RiverDogs reached against Greenville (32-37) starter Alex Scherff (3-5, 4.35). Welfrin Mateo, making his first start in three days, led off the frame with his first double since joining Charleston on June 9. Eduardo Navas attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt in effort to get his teammate over to third with one away, and ended up with an infield single when the ball was not fielded cleanly by Scherff. Doggie Bites Another Time Through: Since last Wednesday (June 5), the RiverDogs have had the best pitching run in the league, turning in a 2.08 ERA that leads the SAL over the past 11 days and just 28 runs allowed (2 nd best) over that stretch. Despite the impressive run, the RiverDogs are just 5-6 over that span and tied with the Augusta GreenJackets for second place in the SAL Southern Division, a half-game back of the first place Lexington Legends. The Lexington Legends have taken sole possession of first place in the division by a half-game following their third straight win. All hope is not lost for the RiverDogs, but their playoff hopes remain on life support entering the final day of the first half. Charleston needs both Augusta and Lexington to lose their respective games, and the Dogs must beat the Greenville Drive Sunday afternoon as well in order to clinch. First-Round Pedigree: Catcher Anthony Seigler, the Yankees’ first-round pick at 23 rd overall last year, joined the RiverDogs on Monday night in Rome and made his Single-A debut less than 30 miles away from his hometown of Cartersville, Ga. When Seigler was taken by the Yankees last year, he became the highest pick the Bronx Bombers had used on a catcher since Thurmon Munson was taken fourth overall in 1968. He is the highest drafted talent to play for the RiverDogs since OF Blake Rutherford in 2017 (18 th overall) and the second-highest pick since No. 1 overall selection Delmon Young in 2004. Put him in the books: Brandon Lockridge’s impressive first-half continued as he became just the 21 st RiverDog and the 33 rd player in Charleston’s franchise history (circa 1980) to post a 10 HR-10 SB season, ripping his historic 10 th blast on Friday night in his 63 rd game. Before Lockridge, Charleston’s most recent 10-and-10 campaign came in 2017, when now Yankees’ No. 1 prospect Estevan Florial swiped 17 bases and popped 11 homers over 91 games with Charleston; it took the 19-year- old standout until June 24 to accomplish the feat when he hit his 10 th homer in his 64 th game at Greenville. Tyler Austin (2012) was the quickest to accomplish the feat in the past seven seasons for the Dogs, crossing the 10 stolen base threshold 41 games into the season on May 21. With two doubles on Saturday, the Troy product became the fourth RiverDog since 2011 to hit at least 20 doubles before the All-Star Break, and the first since Greg Bird hit 20 two-baggers in 62 games in 2013. Not Good Enough: After a 15-5 stretch from April 25-May 16, the RiverDogs have gone 13-16 over their last 29 games since May 17, losing their first-place position in the SAL Southern Division in the process. Charleston ranks T-10 th in the SAL in hitting during that span (.233), with middle-of-the-pack numbers in on-base percentage (.319, T-6 th ), slugging percentage (.375, 7 th ) and OPS (.694, 5 th ). The Dogs have earned just 359 total bases during that stretch, good for 6 th in the SAL. Charleston’s staff ERA is 3.74 in that span as well, ranking 7 th , and its pitchers have walked the fourth-most opposing hitters (99) and sit in seventh in the league in strikeouts (260). Pinstriped Prospects: The RiverDogs once again tap into a deep farm system in the New York Yankees in their 14 th season of affiliation with the 27-time World Champs. YANKEES SELECT THREE PLAYERS ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE 2019 MLB FIRST-YEAR PLAYER DRAFT

The New York Yankees tonight selected three players over the first two rounds of the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. With their first-round selection (30th overall), the club drafted SS Anthony Volpe out of Delbarton School in Morristown, N.J. With a Competitive Balance Round A selection (38th overall), the Yankees chose LHP TJ Sikkema out of the University of Missouri, before finishing the evening by selecting INF Josh Smith from LSU in the second round (67th overall). The Yankees had acquired the competitive balance selection from the Cincinnati Reds along with INF Shed Long in exchange for RHP Sonny Gray and LHP Reiver Sanmartín on January 21, 2019. Volpe (pronounced “VOHL-pee”) helped Delbarton win the 2019 NJSIAA Non-Public A North Championship and send the Green Wave to Wednesday’s Non-Public A State Championship Game against St. Augustine Prep. A native of Watchung, N.J., he led the USA Baseball 18U National Team to a gold medal at the Pan-American Championships this past December, earning all-tournament honors by hitting .459 (17-for-37) with 17R, 14RBI and 6SB in nine games. The 18-year-old also played in the 2018 Perfect Game All-American Classic last summer at Petco Park in San Diego. “We like a lot about him,” said Damon Oppenheimer, Yankees Vice President of Domestic Amateur Scouting. “He’s going to be a shortstop: the guy can hit, he can run, he’s got plus actions, he’s got really good hands, and he’s got a shortstop’s arm. He’s got tools. He’s been on the big stage with the USA national teams, so he’s got performance, and with a deluxe make-up, the kid brings it every day.” The 5-foot-11, 180-pound shortstop was ranked as the No. 52 overall prospect by Baseball America and No. 63 by MLB Pipeline. Sikkema (pronounced “SICK-eh-muh”) leads all SEC pitchers and ranks fourth in all of NCAA Division I with a 1.32 ERA (88.2IP, 13ER) across 17 games (13 starts) in 2019. The 6-foot-0, 220-pound junior posted a 7-4 record and was named to the All-SEC Second Team. A Golden Spikes Award semifinalist in 2019, he earned Third Team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball. “Sikkema has a unique ability to throw from different angles,” said Oppenheimer. “He’s got plus stuff, he throws it for strikes, and the guy’s a real ultimate competitor. He really gets after it on the mound. He can probably get to the big leagues quickly as a reliever, but we see him as a starter. When you can get a guy who pitched in the SEC with success, it goes a long way.” The Clinton, Iowa, native was the fifth left-handed pitcher selected in this year’s draft. He entered the draft ranked as the No. 57 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline and the No. 81 prospect by Baseball America. Smith, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound infielder, is hitting .346/.436/.533 (85-for-246) with 68R, 15 doubles, 2 triples, 9HR, 41RBI and 20SB in 63 games for LSU, which continues its season in the Super Regionals against Florida State next weekend. The left-handed batter ranks fourth in the SEC in runs scored. Said Oppenheimer, “With Smith, you’ve got a left-handed hitter who was playing shortstop there at LSU. We see him as a middle infielder, whether it’s short, whether it’s second, whatever it takes. He’s a left-handed hitter with pop and he can really hit. We like the fact that he has the tools to stay in the middle of the field and be a good offensive contributor.”
