Last RiverDogs Game: April 5 Right-hander Shawn Semple was electric out of the bullpen, striking out 10 Columbia batters, and right fielder Josh Stowers clubbed a pair of doubles as part of a three-hit night to help the RiverDogs cruise past the Fireflies, 6-1, and improve to 2-0 to start the season on Friday. Semple’s strong showing followed a solid start from former second-round pick Matt Sauer, who yielded just an unearned run in four innings out of the gate in his RiverDogs debut. The RiverDogs jumped out to a lead right from the onset with their top three hitters all reaching to start the ballgame. Catcher Josh Breaux walloped a double over the head of right fielder Jose Miguel Medina for his first hit of the season, plating the game’s first runs. After Columbia got one back in their half of the first, a Fireflies error in the second opened the floodgates for the RiverDogs. Doggie Bites: Good Pitching Beats Good Hitting: RiverDogs pitching has gotten off to a dominant start to the 2019 season, holding their opponents to one or fewer runs through the first two games for the first time in club history during the Yankees era (circa 2005). Four RiverDogs arms have combined for 24 strikeouts while issuing only two walks with over 35 percent of the Firefliesplate appearances resulting in a punchout (24-of-68) so far. Reliever Shawn Semple was particularly dominant on Friday night, fanning 10 of the 17 hitters he faced and inducing a swinging strike on 20 of the 65 pitches he threw (31% swinging strike rate). Speed Kills: Charlestons collective speed figures to be a strength of the club to begin 2019 and Isaiah Pasteur began to show glimpses of the wheels in the Charleston lineup. The left fielder became the first RiverDog to steal multiple bases this year, going 2-for-3 on the night. In 2018, it took the RiverDogs over 3 months for their first multi-stolen base effort when Carlos Vidal swiped a pair of bags on July 9 at Columbia. Stowers Making His Mark in Pinstripes: YankeesNo. 25 prospect Josh Stowers made his mark in his second game with his new organization on Friday night, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a RBI, and a run scored while reaching in four of five trips with a walk. The Marinerssecond-round pick last summer acquired by New York in the Sonny Gray notched the fourth multi-hit game of his young professional career. Pinstriped Prospects: The RiverDogs will again tap into a deep farm system in the New York Yankees. Losing some of their organizational talent due to promotions and trades in the last year, the Yankees’ farm system fell from the second-best system in the game to 20 th on the Baseball America rankings. Despite this, the Bronx Bombers are stocked with intriguing talent at the lower levels of the farm system, including seven of the Yanks’ pre-season Top-30 prospects set to open the season with the RiverDogs (MLB.com/BA): RHP Roansy Contreras (10/7), RHP Luis Medina (14/11), RHP Luis Gil (13/25), C Josh Breaux (15/30), RHP Matt Sauer (17/10), OF Josh Stowers (25/--), and RHP Tanner Myatt (29/--). Fresh Meat: Eight members of last year’s 64-72 squad return to open the season, but only three that spent more than 10 games in a RiverDogs uniform last year: OF Frederick Cuevas (55), C Eduardo Navas (54), and RHP Dalton Higgins (24). It Was the Best of Times, It Was the Worst of Times: The RiverDogs’ 64-72 campaign in 2018 was highlighted by another season of excellent pitching that was bogged down by a young lineup that struggled to score runs at times. Charleston finished second in the league in ERA (3.29) and despite failing to set the club’s strikeout record for a third consecutive campaign, issued the fewest walks for a RiverDogs team in club history. At the plate, the RiverDogs scored just 501 runs (3.7/gm), the most anemic offense in R’Dogs history and the lowest output for a Charleston club since the 1992 Rainbows. After a promising 12-4 start to the second-half, the Dogs skidded to a 19-33 mark the rest of the way, the second-worst mark in the league over that span. Winning Isn’t Everything, It’s the Only Thing: The RiverDogs’ sub-.500 season was a recent rarity for the club, marking just the second losing season in the last seven years.
