Spiritual Gifts

Lumen Gentium 12“The charisms are fitting and useful for the needs of theChurch”.

Lumen Gentium“The Holy Spirit not only sanctifies people through the sacra-ments, but also allots to each of God’s people a specialcharism for the up-building of the church, and these charismsare so precious, and so necessary for the renewal of the churchthat they must be welcomed with joy and consolation”.


Spiritual gifts

Earnestly desire for the gifts (1 Cor 14:1)

Increase in the ministry of the word and in the number ofdisciples (Acts 6:1-7)

Sometimes we fail to recognise the gifts within us


What is a gift/charism

The word for gift (charisma) is derived from the word forgrace (charis).

The word for gift in Rom 12:6 is Charisma (PluralCharismata).

Charism has been described as a special gift granted by theHoly Spirit to every baptized Christian to empower him forthe service of the church.


What is a gift/charism

1 The source of charism is the Holy Spirit.

2 The nature of charism is spiritual ability, endowmentand power.

3 The purpose of charism is service or ministry.

In short, ‘charism is a spirit given ability for Christianservice’.


No ungifted Christian

1 Eph 4:7, “But each of us was given grace according to the measure

of Christs gift

1 Cor 12:7 “To each is given the manifestation of the spirit.”

2 Every baptised christian has been blessed with one, twoor more gifts.

Various gifts for common purpose

1 Cor 12:4-7

Isaiahan gifts (Isa 11:2) are bestowed upon everybaptised Christian for individual benefit. The distributionof gifts or charisms is by divine providence.

1 Cor 12:18, Rom 12:4-6, Eph 4:11-12.

It is hence important to understand oneself and to acceptwhatever gifts God has assigned to us. Paul calls this gift’CHARISMATA’. It is something given by God to man,which the man himself could not have acquired or attained.

These gifts are called personal gifts or gifts for sanctification.

1 Wisdom

2 Understanding

3 Knowledge

4 Counsel

5 Fortitude

6 Fear of the Lord

7 Piety (originally six).


Gifts of the Holy Spirit -Isaiahan Gifts(Isa 11:2)

(i)WisdomIt gives the ability to render right decisions at the right time.

It enables us to understand how to apply truth.

It is an ability to distinguish between what is good and whatis evil.

Lk 2:52, 4:22, Jn 16:7-13.

(ii)UnderstandingIt makes our faith suddenly vivid, and gives us an ability tosee clearly things concerning God.

It is like the sun, which by its radiance illuminates every formand figure, and brings out every shade and colour.

It will enable us to see a harmonious blending of differenttruths, and to accept God in all His dimensions.

It is putting on the mind of the Christ (Jn 14:15, 26).



(iii) Knowledge

Knowledge imparts certainty to our faith.

It helps to understand the truth we have already accepted.

It imparts reverential fear for God on account of Hissovereignty, goodness and justice towards men.

(Mt 11:27b, 1 Cor 12:3)

(iv) CounselIt is the spirit speaking to us in our hearts to make us under-stand in an instant what is to be done (Mt 10:19-20)

We need to know the counsel of God to know how to think,and how to act, as we may not know the reasons for a partic-ular action God calls us to perform.

It is a help which God gives to deal with situations in contrastto the dictates of the world

( Rom 12:1-3).

(v) Fortitude (Holy Spirit as Power)This is a special power given by the Holy Spirit to emboldenus.

It is an extraordinary energy generated by the Holy Spirit it isa God given ability to meet the adversary with all composure.

It removes fear and hence necessary to spread the kingdom ofGod

(1 Jn 4:18, 1 Pet 5:8-9).



(vi)Fear of the LordRealising the Holiness of God, with full reverence, piety anddevotion. It is a grace given by God to be faithful to Him.

The excessive fear of God has to be balanced with reverenceto the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

(1 Pet 2:17)


Gifts of the Holy Spirit- Isaiahan Gifts(Isa 11:2)

(vii) PietyIt is a filial devotion to God, being aware of His living pres-ence.

It is the reverence one feels towards God through appropri-ate actions after accepting God as the Creator, Saviour andProtector, glorifying Him in thought, word and deed

(Rom 12:1.)


Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Manifestation gifts

1 Cor 12:8-10, Eph 4:11 and Rom 12:6-8, When we see aspiritual gift operating, we realize the spirit is at work.


Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Charismatic gifts

The charismatic gifts can be divided into three maincategories.

WORD GIFTS-ProphecyProphecy is a gift by which God speaks to a person, a messageto a community or an individual.

Prophecies are also an effective way for God to direct his peo-ple.

1 Cor 14:3



WORD GIFTS-Various Kinds of tongues / Interpreta-tion of TonguesThe major purpose of Glossolalia or speaking in tongues isto authenticate the gospel message, because the person whois praying in tongues or speaking in Tongues is praying orspeaking in the spirit.

Rom 8:26, 1 Cor 14:22.

The ministerial ‘Gift of Tongues’ is really speaking intongues.

Speaking in Tongues comes only when there is a specialanointing and is a transient gift (comes and goes).

Since a person who is praying or speaking in tongues does notknow what he is praying, the intellect or mind is not used.

When somebody speaks in tongues, someone else or even theperson himself will through the power of the Holy Spirit re-ceive an interpretation in the vernacular.



WORD GIFTS - Visions / Interpretation of VisionsSometimes God speaks through pictures or through writtenwords

(Joel 2:28, 11:5-18).



WORD GIFTS - Teaching and Preaching

These gifts may be built upon natural gifts, but sometimesmay be supernatura (Eg. Paul).

Those who are called to these ministries are expected to studythe Bible, attend schools of evangelization, study catholic lit-erature and teachings of the church.



REVELATIONAL GIFTS

The three gifts, word of wisdom, knowledge and discernmentof spirits are called Revelational Gifts or Gifts to Know.

The word of knowledge serves as a tool to diagnose - it revealsto the person having this gift what the problem is.

Word of Wisdom acts as the prescription to the problems inlife, i.e., what we need to do regarding the problems.



REVELATIONAL GIFTS - Word of Wisdom andknowledgeWhen a Christian yields his voice to speak in an unknowntongue, he is speaking in the spirit, when he seeks God’s wis-dom before speaking to another, he is thinking in the spirit.

Wisdom is knowledge rightly applied, to a particular situationin one or other’s life.

Word of Knowledge is something like a spiritual x-ray, whichhelps us to discover the unconscious. Word of Wisdom is aspiritual therapy that prescribes the remedy to the ills of life.Examples:

Word of Knowledge: Old Testament: 2 Kgs 6:12New Testament: Mt 26:34

Word of Wisdom: Old Testament: Deut 34:9New Testament: Jn 8:7



This gift enables a person to distinguish different spirits.REVELATIONAL GIFTS - Discernment of Spirits

1 We have God himself who is a spirit (1 Cor 12:10,Jn 4:24).

2 We have the evil spirit (Eph 6:12)‘spirit of wickedness’; 1 Tim 4:1‘deceiving spirit’; Jn 10:10‘the thief’ and ‘the human spirit’ Prov 20:27

3 The ‘spirit of a man’ is the lamp of the Lord, searchingall the inner depths of his heart,‘the hasty spirit’ Prov 29:20);‘spirit of pride’ Hos 7:10);‘the broken spirit’ Prov 15:13).



SIGN GIFTS or POWER GIFTS

Faith, healing and miracles which are power gifts are calledPNEUMATIKA by Paul, since their source is the indwellingspirit and not nature.

If it was a natural ability, it would have been called ENERGE-MATA.

These gifts manifest the power of God in the world in a par-ticular way.

They draw attention to God’s reality and presence, and sobring people to the Knowledge of God.

The sign gifts are then, the working of the Holy Spirit inpower through certain Christians, so that man might knowthat the Kingdom of God is at hand.



SIGN GIFTS or POWER GIFTS - Faith

The gift of faith is not the same as doctrinal faith, by whichall Christians believe and turn to Christ.

The charismatic Gift of Faith is a special gift of prayer,whereby the person who prays with faith knows through thework of the Spirit in him, that what he asks for will be given.( Mk 11:24)



SIGN GIFTS or POWER GIFTS - Gifts of Healing

The charism of healing as one of those gifts which serve as asign, that the kingdom of God is present.

The gift of faith would rather be the inner assurance andsource of healing, and the gift of healing would be theactual activities of physical, spiritual or emotional heal-ing.(Mk 16:17-18)



SIGN GIFTS or POWER GIFTS -Working of Miracles

The gift of miracles involves the spirit given power to performan act contrary to or superadded to natural law.

Example:(Mk 2:12, Mk 6:51, Luke 5:9, Acts 9:42)


Conclusion

Neglect not your giftsIn 1 Cor 12:7, Paul says: “The manifestation of the Spirit is given to

every man to profit”.

Spiritual abilities are for the benefit of others; for building upthe body of Christ.


Conclusion

God does not want luke warm ChristiansRom 12:11 says: “Do not be sluggish in zeal, keep your spirit at boiling

point, seize your opportunities”.

1 Tim 4:12, 14: “Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example

in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Do not neglect not the

gift that is in you”.

Today, the Lord calls each one of us to minister using ourunique charisms, he has given to us to minister to his peoplewho have been redeemed by Him.


Conclusion

God does not want luke warm Christians

The true meaning of ministry is love in action, and this ismade possible only by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit.
