The Story – Chapter 4: Deliverance Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Divine Service 2 October 4, 2020

8:00 a.m.

AS WE GATHER Today we continue our journey through God’s story, centered around the book, The Story. What particular word would you say best describes God's work in both the Old and New Testaments? A good candidate is the word deliverance. We see this theme in chapter 4 of The Story. We remember our need for deliverance and reconciliation as people who have sinned and are by nature enslaved by sin and alienated from God. Remember also the good news that, in Christ, God has reconciled us to Himself. We have been delivered from the bondage of sin, set free to serve God! May God bless your worship as we recall how God delivered us from sin and celebrate the kingdom work of the LWML! Special Pre-Service Music: “Children of the Heavenly Father” and “He Leadeth Me” – Ron Bartelt Opening Hymn: “Today Your Mercy Calls Us” #915 1 Today Your mercy calls us To wash away our sin. However great our trespass, Whatever we have been, However long from mercy Our hearts have turned away, Your precious blood can wash us And make us clean today. 2 Today Your gate is open, And all who enter in Shall find a Father’s welcome And pardon for their sin. The past shall be forgotten, A present joy be giv’n, A future grace be promised, A glorious crown in heav’n.

Page 4: Chapter 4: Deliverance Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost ...

3 Today our Father calls us; His Holy Spirit waits; His blessèd angels gather Around the heav’nly gates. No question will be asked us How often we have come; Although we oft have wandered, It is our Father’s home. 4 O all-embracing Mercy, O ever-open Door, What should we do without You When heart and eye run o’er? When all things seem against us, To drive us to despair, We know one gate is open, One ear will hear our prayer. Invocation

Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen.

Confession and Absolution Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. People: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive

our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. People: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and

unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not fully lived as Your kingdom people. We have not brought forth the fruits of righteousness as we ought. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will, walk in Your ways, and bear kingdom fruit to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His only Son to die for you and for His

sake forgives you all of your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name

of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen.

Pastor: Let us pray. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, Your mercies are new every morning;

and though we deserve only punishment, You rescue us as your children and called us to be Your kingdom people. Like you provided for Israel in the wilderness and led them to the promised land, provide for all our needs of body and soul and lead us to our heavenly home. Grant that we may heartily acknowledge Your merciful goodness, give thanks for all Your benefits, and serve You in producing a fruitful harvest as we follow you; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People: Amen. **Karla Kearney will read the Old Testament** OLD TESTAMENT: Exodus 3:7-15 (following Ch. 4 of The Story) 7 Then the Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings, 8 and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.” 13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

**Jan Zeigler will read the Epistle** EPISTLE: Philippians 3:4b-14 4 though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. HOLY GOSPEL: Matthew 21:33-46 Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-first chapter. People: Glory to you, O Lord. 33 “Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. 34 When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit. 35 And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39 And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41 They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”

42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:

Page 8: Chapter 4: Deliverance Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost ...

8

“‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? 43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. 44 And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.” 45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them. 46 And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because they held him to be a prophet. Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ. NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life,

Page 9: Chapter 4: Deliverance Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost ...

who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen.

Sermon Hymn: “Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer” #918

1 Guide me, O Thou great Redeemer, Pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but Thou art mighty; Hold me with Thy pow’rful hand. Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more; Feed me till I want no more.

2 Open now the crystal fountain

Whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fiery, cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through. Strong deliv’rer, strong deliv’rer, Be Thou still my strength and shield; Be Thou still my strength and shield.

3 When I tread the verge of Jordan,

Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of death and hell’s destruction, Land me safe on Canaan’s side. Songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever give to Thee; I will ever give to Thee.

Sermon

Sermon Response Hymn: “Praise, Love, Serve” (Based on LWML Pledge, Text: Jean Hansen Kammerer, Tune: LSB 361) Our God and Father, made the earth, And when we went astray, Our God, the Son, descended here To take our sins away. With His own blood He bought us. He broke the bonds of sin. Then God the Spirit came into Our hearts to dwell within.

In gratitude we pledge ourselves, To Him with all we have. Our hands will work; our voices sing; Our lips proclaim His love. His errands we’ll do gladly; His Gospel we’ll defend; Our silver and our gold we’ll use — His Kingdom to extend. Wherever He has need of us, We will His call obey. Whenever He calls out to us, We’ll answer right away. His will is ours that lost souls Will turn away from sin And come to have eternal life Through fellowship with Him. Verse 2 When through the woods and forest glades I wander, I hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze; Refrain Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Verse 3 But when I think that God, His Son not sparing, Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in— That on the cross my burden gladly bearing He bled and died to take away my sin; Refrain Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Verse 4 When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration And there proclaim: “My God, how great Thou art!” Refrain Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
