be annexed by the US for defense and money, but President Andrew Jackson didn’t want to go to war with Mexico.
Relations with Indians When Lamar became president, the relations with Comanche and Cherokee suffered. Fighting broke
out and Texas pushed the natives westward.
Relations with TejanosAlthough having supported independence, Tejanos
suffered discrimination from white settlers.
Immigration• Germans moved to
Texas and established farming communities.
• Many of them opposed slavery.
• Settlement continued to expand westward.
• Texas was land rich and cash poor.
