Transcript of Chapter 1: Properties of Matter - District 47 Teacher...
Matter: anything that has volume and massVolume: the amount of space that something occupies or the amount of space that
something contains.
Measuring the Volume of LiquidsMeasure liquids from the bottom of the meniscus: the curve at a liquid’s surface.
Units: Liters (L), milliliters (mL)
Measuring the Volume of SolidsThe volume of solid objects is expressed in cubic units.
Ex) m3
, cm
3
Solid objects have three dimensions!
Physical PropertiesA Physical Property can be observed or measured without changing the identity
of an object.
Physical PropertiesDuctility: the ability to be drawn into a thin wire.
Physical PropertiesSolubility: the ability to dissolve in another substance.
Oil is NOT
soluble in
water.
Physical PropertiesViscosity: a liquid’s resistance to flow.
High Viscosity=thick, resists flowing Low Viscosity=flows easily
Chemical PropertiesChemical Properties describe an object’s ability to change into a new, different
substance.
Physical ChangePhysical Change: a change that affects one or more physical properties of a
substance.
Many physical changes are easy to undo.
