CHAPMAN CHATTER

-Gil Alford Corresponding

Secretary

In the piece about Scottish Chapmans that Amelia printed in the last issue [CFA newsletter #3, page 3, column 2], we ,asked for help in getting a computer fLle of LDS-IGI Chapmans of Scotland.

This is to advise you that Doris Hiscox (CFA#36) responded to our plea for help and downloaded the IGI data at her Family History Center (FHC) for us. I now have the disk fLIes. There is probably a center near you with the same capability, a source for information on tens of millions of records.

Doris sent 1 disk of mlll"riages, 2 disks of individual records and 3 disks of parents records. We are indebted to Doris and the LDS Church for this information. We are processing the data with GlPSI into database fLIes, further processing it and printing it here from ASCII text fLIes. It will take a while. We begin with marriages. The data provided was processed or manipulated by computer but no attempt was made to edit the data.

CFA members may have disk fLIes of their choosing - GEDCOM, dBase, or text. Arrange all the specifics with me at the following address:

Gil Alford, Jr. 1403 Kingsford Drive

Florissant, MO 63031-2422 (314) 831-8648

(E-mail intemet:12154,1610@compuservc,com)

I speak for all CFA members when I say, ''Thank You Doris!" Superwoman, herself, couldn't have helped our Association more.

Gil sent me a 45 page disk file of just onesixth of the Scotland marriages, thinking I might have room in this issue to begin printing some of them. Unfortunately there is just not room this time, plus I am wondering if it might be a greater service to our members to print a separate publication devoted strictly to this data from Scotland. What do you think membership?

Before you read any further, I'd like to take a

Baublesmoment and introduce you to our new columnist, Jean from the Chapman Snow. Jean researches the Ceopman'ssurnames: CHAPMAN, ROBINSON, Bag SNYDER mostly, but also trying to check, BLISS, FAY and TANNER.

Jean's varied career includes: Teacher (with an MA. in French and English), wife, mother, gardener, qUi/ter, professional astrologer, and a professional opera singer. (At 71 she is still teaching voice and beillg paid to sing a solo ill church every SUllday!)

In 1947 she translated Maurice Helin's History Medieval Latill Literah,re for the antiquarian bookdealer she worked for during WWlI, .plus she has been published ill American Astrology. And, in her spare time, she attained status as a prize·winning poetl

THE CHAPMAN MEANING by Jean Chapman Snow

My freshman year German professor looked at my registration card. "Ah," he said. "Fraulein Kaufman. Welcome." Seeing my puzzled look, he continued. "A Chapman is a Kaufman. A peddler."

"But -- but my family comes from England." And peddler? I pictured a wandering gypsy selling

cheap baubles. I' was only eighteen and my interest in genealogy was many years in the future. Still, through the next two years of German I was Fraulein Kaufman. '

You erudite Chappies out there are way ahead of me, of course. You know that our name does come from the Old High German choufman or kaufman which became the Old English ceapman. Old High German chouph, Old Saxon cop and Old English ceap meant barter, business, dealing, which, combined with mann or man, gave us our name.

But spelling bees and dictionaries were centuries away. Our name was also spelled cepeman, cypman, cypmann, chepmon, caepmon, even shapman! You know from your ancestor hunting how quirky spelling was, even in' the 18oos. The further you go back in time, the more capricious it becomes.

My two volume Oxford English Dictionary supplies four meanings for chapman. A chapman was a man whose business was buying and selling -- a merchant, trader or dealer. Second, he was an itinerant dealer who travelled about from place to

Page 3

place selling or buying; one who kept booths at markets etc; a hawker, a pedlar (English spelling).

The third meaning is that of an agent in a commercial transaction, a negotiator or broker. Cypemen are mentioned as early as c.89O, but alas, I am unable to read and understand the Old English and Old Saxon examples.

Fourth, a chapman was a purchaser or customer. A quote from 1642, in English that 1 can understand, says, "It is not a meete thing that man should be both chapman and customer." Hmm?

There is a citation that appears to be a law handed down by Edward VI in 1553. A Petty chapman was a retail dealer. Edward said, "No Tinker, Pedler, or petit Chapman shall wander about from the Towne but such as shall be licenced by two Justices of Peace." What would they think of today's monthly and quarterly forms and frequent law changes?

A 1592 example called uS "Chapmen, able to spred more pamphlets...then (sic) all the bookesellers in London." That reminds US that chapbooks were the popular literature of the time --The Enquirer of the 1500s! Small pamphlets of popular tales, ballads, and tracts were circulated by itinerant dealers or chapmen.

Some of our ancestors were solid middle class merchants with shops. Others were much needed wandering dealers and peddlers. How much needed, I had forgotten by the time of my German class.

Much later I remembered my early childhood. During the Depression my father lost his business in New York City and we moved to our summer house at Lake Oscawana (Putnam Valley, NY). The nearest town, Peekskill, is about nine miles away. No supermarkets or mom & pop stores adorned every crossroads then. My mother was grateful for the iceman who came twice a week in summer, and for the man who showed up several times a year in his truck to sharpen scissors and knives. \Vfy sister, Chappie Eleanor Lent, remembers weekly deliveries from a vegetable man, a butcher, a fIsh seller, and twice a week the bread man. And, oh yes, the Watkins man, with his vanilla and lemon extracts and spices.

We didn't call them chapmen, but they filled that niche for country folk. So despite jokes about travel1ing salesmen and peddlers, whatever the spelling, we can be proud to belong to the great family of Chapmans. -_...~ .._Do You Know? Lineage means one line of descends from the same surname? or that Direc/ Line or Pedigree means descends stright down the surname?

A Few Words rrom our Publicist:

Phyllis LaSheD 'Shelly" CHAPMAN

My normal duty as publicist is to advertise the CFA and all we hope to accomplish, but for this column, I want to detour a bit and publicize some great news for myself and hopefully give encouragement to our members.

Nine years ago, I wrote Licking County, Ohio trying to fmd more information on the parental family of my gr-grandfather Andrew Spitzer CHAPMAN. All I knew was that he was born in that county sometime between 1850 & 1860 and that his parents' names were supposedly Samuel and Polly Jones CHAPMAN. Since that time I watched for data in Chapman Chalter, while getting side-tracked with day-to-day living and other lines of research.

In May, of this year, I received a letter from Doris COURTNEY of San Diego, CA -- she writes

Page 4

Page 5: CHAPMAN FAMILY ASSOCIATION · Send to: Mr. M.D. Chapman Morgan, Chapman Family Association Vice President & Treasurer, P.O. Box 2325, Orcutt, CA 93457-2325 . The Chapman Family Association

that she hopes, "by some luck, miracle or fate" that I am still at my address from nine years ago. (The Licking County Genealogical Society people had. sent her a copy of my letter.)

Her husband is a descendant of Samuel and Mary Jones CHAPMAN through their eldest son James, and she has a family Bible reference listing their children -- including Andrew.

Send sent me census 'records and other information including the cemetery where Samuel and Mary are buried (which happens to be only an hour or so drive from my home.)

As Doris says, "it all feels right" concerning our records and she is currently seeking to establish Samuel as a Civil War veteran. She is also thrilled to receive information on CFA and is joining along with her husband's cousin Kathy.

Hopefully both will contribute data to CFA in the days ahead as well all three attempt to extend our particular line.

So, the word from here is "don't give up either hope or the ship" when it comes to your family research efforts.

Winfield S. TUBBS #120 7508 200th Avenue Maquoketa, IA 52060-8846

Here's a comment from Mr. Tubbs: I am hoping to learn more about the ancestry of my mother's father, Joseph Basford CHAPMAN (a twin, I think), b. 06 Nov 1858 in Ohio, d. 03 Mar 1932, buried in Sturgeon Cem., Corydon, IA, whose grandmother was, I think, a BASFORD. His father was Joe CHAPMAN b. 1820, (his) grandfather Levy CHAPMAN, b. 1774.

Kay F. MASTERSON #68 720 South Street Yreka, CA 96097

I ran across the [following] listing in [the Evergreen Cemetery] book [Yreka, Siskiyou Co., CA] and figured they might be of use to someone.

George CHAPMAN b. 1871, d. 1939 Hazel CHAPMAN b. 1884, d. 03 Jan 1957 Wilbur CHAPMAN b. 1905, d. 16 Jan 1978 Baby CHAPMAN

Thanks Fay, the original data has been sent on to Gil Alford now for further processing. The few minutes it took you to copy the two pages and mail them to me may one day prove to be the "missillg lillk" that ties all elltire family together. Now back to Kay's letter,.. Hoping to get my GEDCOM files to you

soon, as soon as I can figure out how to do it. I have Brother's Keeper with quite a bit of info about John B. CHAPMAN, Sr from New York. Until I get those flies to you, may I place an inquiry in the next newsletter? (Which are fantastic!)

John B. CHAPMAN, Sr. b. NY abt 1814-17, m. Bettie DODGE St. Joseph Co., MI 23 May 1839. John d. Phillipsburg, Phillips Co., KS 24 Jan 1891, but was buried in Stromsburg, NE where some children lived. 1880 KS census says his father was from CT and mother from NY, but who are they?? John and Bettie lived in MI, MO, IA & KS and had 12 children.

Thanks for your help and hopefully the [above cemetery listing] will be of use.

Mary W. WILCOX #87, 8515 Westgate' Lenexa, KS 66215-2861

Mary is a descendant of David T. Chapman b. 24 Sep 1817 VA. Gil Alford has been unable to pick up a trail on this David in our records but did find marriages that are suspect as those of his descendants. A Sarah Jane CHAPMAN married Fielden COFFEE Daviess Co., MO 6 Apr 1854 and a John David CHAPMAN married Josephine MORRIS there January 13, 1867. There was also a George W. CHAPMAN who m. Mary E. BUTLER in adjoining Harrison Co., 22 Oct 1865; Willey E. CHAPMAN who m. Alice E. THOMPSON in Harrison Co., 9 Nov 1880 and a Charles CHAPMAN who m. Belle SKJRMUM 24 Oct 1875 there and the same CHAPMAN or another Charles m. Belle DAVIS there September 2, 1878. From Mary's submitted data it shows that DAVID T. CHAPMAN got his second wife in Harrison County. We'd like to assist Mary· make further research connections. Can you help? If so, please send a copy of data to the association so that we may add the data to our master record.

Dolly ANDERSON #50, 1037 Hansom Drive St. Louis, MO 63137-1815

I an connected to the CHAPMAN lineage through a Thomas CHAPMAN that was listed in Clinton Twsp., Decatur Co., IN, 1840 and 1850 census. The 1850 census states that Thomas was born in KY abt. 1800. His wife, Mahala, is listed as being born about 1807, but no birthplace is given. The four children listed were: Oliver, b. 1831; Rebecca, b. 1833; Margaret, b. 1836; Elizabeth, b. 1838. All of the children were listed as being born in IN.

The son, Oliver CHAPMAN; was m. 12 Oct 1854, to Judith HOLDERLY, dau of James D. HOLDERLY. This info was taken from a newspaper obituary and the place of m. was not given. Oliver moved to Macon Co., MO" and died there on 16 Jul 1894. Nothing is known of children.

In both the 1840 and 1850 census, Thomas CHAPMAN was living near Daniel CREAMER (CRAMER). One of Daniel CREAMER"S sons, John, m. Rebecca CHAPMAN sometime between the 1850 census and 1853 when tlierr first child was born, I have not been able to find the marriage of this John CREAMER and Rebecca CHAPMAN •. which I would really like to find.

John and Rebecca moved to Macon Co., MO. in the early 1860s and Rebeccas died there on 17 Oct 1871 (date on cemetery stone.) Rebecca named her only daughter Margaret.

Dolly is a widow and has retired after teaching for 30 years. She says most of her time "is spent on activin'es relating to genealogy." She is the Publications Exchange Chairperson for the SI. Louis Genealogy Society and puts in at least "3 days a month as monitor at the Society's library." It seems most of her ancestors were in this country before the Revolutionary War, settling on the East coast. She says her most thrilling experience was when she "attended a family reunion in Dinkelsbuhl, Ge17llany, and gDt to visit the house where [her] ancestor was bam in 1727, before coming to this country In 1738."

About Ohio: In summary (detail to come in about a month), I am seeking information from Scioto County, Ohio about: James CHAPMAN, b. in KY? on July 3, 1811. Also about his father: Reuben CHAPMAN, born about 1785 in Virginia (?). Also on Reuben's wife: Nancy FERQUA, born 22 Sep 1788 (in VA?). Of course, there are other Chapman kin in Scioto County as it appears they had a presence there until about 1860,

A note in passing: in one of rhe CFA Newsletters, I read that Vic Boisseree of Carmichael, California had Chapman kin in the now ghosttown Tuscarora, Nevada who died, Vic thinks, about 1883 there. I dug the obituary out for Vic from our nearby Nevada Historical Society! I don't yet know if Vic had already done that, but if not, it will prove helpful to him. I expect to hear from him upon my June 9 return to Nevada. Sam Chapman, CFA #124.

Our CFA Corresponding Secretary, Gil Alford, Is In touch with Sam, but I thought his data worth printing as another member/reader may see a connection in Sam's line.

Phillip Everett CHAPMAN #122 636 S. E. 49th Ave. Portland, OR 97215 [wife Debra Louise Brockett

Thanks to my sister, Christine CHAPMAN HILL (#100), I have reviewed your past newsletters and feel that you are doing an admirable and reputable service for those researching Chapman family genealogies.

My father, Edwin Everett (Eugene) CHAPMAN, was born in 191~ in Tampa, FL. His father was Ira Martin CHAPMAN and am unsure where he was born, although I believe it may have been in Lawrence County, Ohio around 1880-85. Supposedly he had served on the U.S.S. Kearsarge in the Spanish American War c. 1898. Anecdotal history reveals he was killed in a saloon fight in Detroit, Michigan, sometime in the late 1920s or early 1930s.

I did extensive genealogy about 15 years ago on my family tree and was able to fill in a great deal of information on my mother's roots, which go back to Denmark. I was unfortunately unable to really do much on my father's family tree. I was told that Ira Martin's father (my father's grandfather) came to America from England (possibly Scotland) and was a Baptist preacher. However, if he came from Scotland, there would be a good chance that he may have been a Presbyterian preacher. All my research into the Baptist Conventions and Southern Baptist Conventions brought no information. I did not know then how to research such information in England or Scotland, as I don't know if Archibald was a preacher there and then came to America or if he became a preacher in America (or if, in fact, he was a preacher at all).

It means a great deal to me to see such an organization as yours really doing such detailed work. I think it's interesting that while I can go back as far as the late 1500s on my mother's line, I'm much more interested in fmding out more about my father's grandfather. As far as I can tell from anecdotal information provided through' my late grandmother and father, my grandfather, Ira Martin CHAPMAN, was pretty much a scoundrel and not much of a loving father. My father, raised often in orphanages while his newly-remarried mother toured the country, really wasn't a very loving father: I believe he was a reflection of his own fathering examples, which was poor. In other words, he didn't know how to love.

So, perhaps if I can learn more about Archibald and those relatives farther back, I can somehow fmd a more functional, loving family lineage

to reflect upon, rather than the few examples I have now.

There is also the chance that Ira Martin did not die in a saloon fight, because shortly after a random child-killing in Detroit, later attributed to Saccho & Vanzetti, Ira had his wife Grace Cleona Estridge Chapman took my father to a farm in Florida and she only heard vicariously that Ira had been killed and buried in a pauper's grave. It is quite possible that Ira may have chosen this as a way of severing himself from those family obligations. I have not been able to locate any police file information regarding the incident because I cannot get a close enough time to

do so efficiently. So, I'm pleased to be a part of your

association. Perhaps I may at last fill in those missing gaps. Thank you, Phillip

Would like to correspond with other descendants of Thomas CHAPMAN of Frederick Co., VA (Shenandoah Valley.) Have reason to believe these are the descendants of the Stafford Co., Fauquier Co., Fredericksburg, VA CHAPMANS who arrived in VA in the early 16oos. [My family's] flIst known Thomas CHAPMAN was one of the Capt. Daniel Morgan's Riflemen, taken prisoner with Morgan and others, at Ouebec 1775-1776. History proves that Morgan selected his men from old Frederick Co., which today, makes up the area of Frederick and Clarke Counties of VA.

,Looking for info on Almira V. WILLIAMS, b. 1835 somewhere in KY? According to [my] CHAPMAN [family's] oral history, she was an Indian who had a child at age 15. She is found on US Census in the VA Co., of Rockbridge in 1850. She's living with either a sister or cousin, Elizabeth BARCLAY who was also b. in KY. Elizabeth m. a BARCLAY from VA. The story goes thus:

Almira was sent to the Barclay's home to have her baby. She was 15 and unwed (baby's father believed to be a Shawnee brave·-couple not allowed to marry.) Her parents were full-blooded Shawnee Indian that had lived among Whites for years.

The child, a girl, was b. in 1850 and named Almira V. (we think VA) Williams (she later went by Ellie or Ella V. Williams.) At some point within the next ten years, this child showed up in the household of Gillbons/Riding family of Frederick Co., VA. Child was raised by them and she named her dau after Mariah Elizabeth Riding. She was not legally adopted. This was my grandmother. She married Thomas E. CHAPMAN on 1 Apr 1873 in Frederick Co., Va.

I need to verify this story, even if by other family tradition. Please contact me if you have info. I have a photo of Mariah, brother Harry Thomas and father Thomas E. CHAPMAN that shows Mariah and Harry's obvious Shawnee features (light olive skin with gray or hazel eyes.) My mother, grandmother, grgrandmother and my daughter all have hazel eyes. I even have a grand.daughter with hazel eyes. I would appreciate response from anyone who can help. Thank you!

He had sons: John (b. 1830), George (b. 1836), Nathan (b1839), Henry (b. 1842), and Edward (b. 1847); also one daughter, Ada (b. 1837). I would like to fmd out more of George and Margaret, as they are my g-ggrandparents. -----If you are computerized and have access to the Internet, here is a little info you may fmd helpful.

1. The Library of Congress is now accessible without a password. System is called LOCIS.

2. The Union Catalog of Virginia Libraries is called CAVALIR. It is now possible, via CAVALIR ON·LINE on the VLIN Gopher, to examine the Virginia State Archives On-Line Catalog. To get there, if your system has it, go to "Worldwide Gopher Systems" or "All the Gopher Servers in the World" or a like title. Choose the USA and go to VA, and then to the Virginia Library and Information Network (VLIN). Then, go to CAVALIR ON-LINE. To

access, hit the "TEL" prompt. If you want to go there directly:

type telnet hp3000.vsla.edu

At the LOGIN prompt, type: hello gopher, user.clas52

To exit CAVALIR system type: / quit. CAVALIR ON-LINE gives the holdings of a number of Virginia libraries, including the Library of Virginia. To get to the Archives catalog, type: /lib. You will get a menu, offering, among others, Library of Virginia (the catalog incorporated into the larger CAVALIR ON·LINE database) and Virginia State Archives. Once a selection is made, you get a prompt about the type of terminal that you are using. Unless you know more than I, just choose: Other ASCII device. Obviously, the Archives database is incomplete--retrospective cataloging is very time consuming··but it does contain Bible Records and Genealogical Notes and Charts.

3. U niv. of KY has loaded their vital records for death, marriage and divorce. (I believe the death records go back to 1911, but the other two are still at the mid·1950s.) Just go into the U of KY system and chose "VITALS".

4. Univ. of Chicago has loaded the Illinois land grant index meso So, if one has an ancestor who received land in IL, in the early days, it is possible to find index information about it there. The me will include the person's name, date of acquisition and reason for acquiring (grant, purchase, etc.).--_...~..._-

I'm not sure of SHAW ancestor connection, but the CHAPMAN ancestors include Deberra S. CHAPMAN and Isaiah Monroe CHAPMAN (lines featured in this issue.)

This annual event is held the second Sunday in June each year. My invitation says, "we have rarely changed the location from Ft. McAllister, but if we do, I'm sure the word would get around." It also encouraged "long lost cousins" and other family members to be sure to get their current address to Cousin J. Ronald Drew (CFA member #70) at 2821 NEW CASTLE DRIVE, ORANGE PARK, FL 32065.

If you have a CHAPMAN family reunion in the planning stages, we'll be pleased to announce it _. before it occurs or after.
