About Changing Lives, Changing Communities momentum meetingsIn 2018/19, QCOSS, QDN and ADCQ held 14 Changing Lives, Changing Communities events across Queensland. These two-day events created new ways for people of each community to come together, envision and co-create solutions by asking, “What will it take to create communities where everyone contributes, matters and belongs?”

To continue building our movement for change from the events, QCOSS has planned a momentum meeting in each of the locations. These meetings aim to continue to keep people in the community engaged and excited for the next Changing Lives, Changing Communities events.

This document brings together the highlights from the meeting in 2019 in Caboolture. These notes have been summarised and written by the hosting QCOSS staff and are not direct quotes from the participants of the meeting.

Who hosted the meeting?Lead host – Shelley Birrell, Senior Community Capacity Officer, QCOSS

Acknowledgment of Country Lou Abson from QDN

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands where we meet, the Gubbi Gubbi people, and pay respect to the Elders – past, present and emerging and acknowledge the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to play within the community.

We also acknowledge people with disability who have come before us and died in institutional settings, as well as those who are still trapped in institutions or silenced by institutional practices. We take on the responsibilities of being clear about the rights of ALL people with disability and, where necessary, speak in an informed and considered manner, for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Check-in: What inspired you to be here? Here are some of the participant’s responses:

The challenges of building momentum and how we can support each other in that work

To be part of the continuous journey in bettering out communities for the future

To continue and build on the work that has been done in Changing Lives, Changing Communities

To continue to be a part of the Changing Lives, Changing Communities movement

Connections and reconnections

Reflections: World Café What was our intention, and what did we learn?

Breaking down barriers, increasing inclusiveness Sharing stories from the region Highlighting the positive experiences, people and supports in the community Increase the awareness of people in the community The range of non-inclusive areas. Not just for people with disability, but

various impacts. Identified lack of supports and services Social impact of introduction of NDIS on community and support Highlight the need of inclusive community Understand diversity Celebrating the success stories

What could we improve/find out/do differently next time?

Scope for more people to attend More advertising Encourage more local community members, rather than strongly services Encourage a growth of the business sector. Increase opportunities More people with disability represented More preparation and lead up time, to allow for more advertising Market what is in it for people to come Two full days is maybe too much Need decision makers in the room More time to process stories Less content Highlighting funding opportunities and availabilities More/longer breaks More support for people with disability – e.g. a break out room, or breaks

between speakers Include a celebration at the end of the second day – to celebrate our

community
