The A n d r o s c o g g i n Cou nt y C ha m-ber of Commerce

functions at the convergence of business, education, public service and community.

At the height of awards season in the country each year, the Cham-ber recognizes those whose contri-butions to the quality of life in our communities in the past year were among the particularly notable.

Public Service Leader

Phil Crowell, will be honored with the 2012 Public Service Leadership Award. Once k now n to school kids in Auburn simply as Officer Friendly, Crowell rose through the ranks of the Auburn Police Department to become its chief.

While serving as chief, Crowell was also tapped to function as assistant city manager and as acting city manager, while maintaining the effectiveness and integrity of the police department and ensuring

that it continued to ser ve the interests of the citizens of Auburn. Throughout, Chief Crowell has earned the continuing respect of his department, of a succession of elected officials, municipal offi- cials, law enforcement officials statewide, and the deep appre-ciation of the people of Auburn.

Small Business Advocate

Established in 2004, the Small Business Advocate Award was named in honor of the late Ken Add iton, a long-t i me ba n ker and communit y advocate who provided vital counsel to scores of small businesses that have become part of the fabric of the community. The award is conferred to those who best embody the spirit with which Additon was infused.

A great friend to the Chamber, the small business community, his clients and legions of personal friends, all past recipients of this award have cited Additon’s inspi-ration as the source of their own motivation. The 2012 award will be presented to the Lewiston Career Center, which provides local busi-

nesses w it h f ree employ ment recruitment, hiring, and train-ing, as well as helping individuals achieve productive positions in the community.

Cool Chamber Award

Int roduced i n 2010, t he Cool Chamber Award recognizes those who have made a sig n i f ica nt dif ference in reducing energ y usage and preserving resources.

Since 1945, the IRC Industrial Roofing companies have helped their customers build, retrofit and maintain facilities in ways which optimize performance, energ y efficiency, durability, and access to new technologies, including solar arrays. They have won numerous awards for positive environmental contributions and have become an LEED-certified contractor, as well.

Education Award

The 2012 Education Award will be presented to Healthy Androscog-gin, which was created in 1995 as Tobacco Free L-A, a grassroots group of community members and

organizations working to reduce tobacco use in the greater Lewis-ton-Auburn area.

Si nce t hen, t he orga n i zat ion has grown to include nearly 300 coalition members and over 2,300

subscribers and has broadened its focus to include exercising, eating well and the prevention of substance abuse. It continues to help improve the quality of life for everyone in this community.

“Having the opportunity to select those organi-zations or individuals

I consider to be especially worthy of recognition each year is one of the greatest perks of the presidency of the Chamber,” stated Chip Mor-rison, Chamber president. This year, there will be two recipients of the President’s Award. “I only confer this award when I deem t here i s s ome one e spe c ia l l y deserving,” Morrison explained, “and I am excited by the winners selected this year.”

Northeast Charter & Tours, and owner Scott Riccio, have been selected both for all they do in suppor t of t he Cha mber a nd the community, and also for the incredible growth the company has experienced in the past decade.

The mission of Northeast Charter & Tour Inc. Co. is to prov ide customers with safe, reliable and affordable transportation with except iona l customer ser v ice a nd a commitment to protect the environment. In addition to its specia lt y tours t hroughout New England, the company will transport Mainers anywhere from Portland to Presque Isle.

Customer service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year. If it’s an unexpected trip or an important emergency, Northeast can provide you with “one less thing to worry about.”

The Librar y Cafe, and ow ners Daphne and Bill Berta, have been chosen for the second President’s

Aw a r d . T he c a fe op ene d i n December 2009 in the historic C a r ne g ie l ibr a r y of Aubu r n . Since then, it has served library patrons, the business community and general public. They provide catering off-site and on-site in library meeting rooms. They have volunteered valuable support for a growing number of community events and organizations.

The Chamber’s New Member of the Year is Center Street Dental, in Auburn, offering cosmetic and family dentistry in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Center Street Dental serves the communities of Lewiston and Auburn and all of Androscoggin County.

Dr. Rosemarie Sheline, Dr. James P. Dunn and the rest of the Center Street Dental staff strive to provide the most advanced and gentle dental care possible. They pro- vide checkups, cleanings, implants, porcelain veneers, teeth whiten- ing, digital X-rays, root canals, tooth-colored fillings, dentures, night guards, extractions, crowns, and bridges.

They have demonstrated signifi-cant support for the Chamber and many other community org-anizations, including The Franco-American Heritage Center, Central Maine Community College and the Lewiston-Auburn Film Festival.

Pike Industries, with more than 35 locations throughout northern New England, is the 2012 recipient of the Poland Business Award. Founded in 1872, Pike Industries h a s de v elop e d t h r ou g h f i v e generations of family leadership. After a small – but determined – beg i n n i ng, t he compa ny ha s evolved into one of the largest asphalt and aggregate materials producers in New England.

The company is committed to the values of “quality, customer satisfaction, innovation, safety, e nv i r on m e nt a l s t e w a r d s h i p, integrity and community.”

They deployed a new, state-of-the-art asphalt plant which allows the company to produce warm, mixed asphalt that is easier to use by paving crews and saves fuel in the process, and they continue to research better products, tech-niques and training methods.

That the Androscoggin Coun-ty Chamber of Commerce has achieved record mem-

bership of over 1,400 – virtually having doubled its size in the past decade – attests to the vibrant busi-ness constituency represented by the Chamber.

At no time is the strength and vitality of Lewiston-Auburn and environs more evident than at the Chamber’s annual meeting, the largest gathering of the year of business, nonprofit, education and civic leadership.

With a sell-out crowd of some 450 expected on the evening of Febru- ary 9, the event celebrates those businesses, organizations and in-dividuals who have demonstrated e x c e p t i on a l l e a d e r s h i p a n d commitment to our community.

The Ray Geiger Award, named i n honor of t he brot her who f i rst broug ht Geiger Brot hers to Lewiston and who became a tireless community advocate, has

often been conferred on people who have had close connections to the Chamber and have served t he or g a n i z at ion i n v a r iou s capacities. It will be presented this year to Steve Closson, the recently ret i red president a nd CEO of Androscoggin Bank.

In the past two decades, perhaps no single individual has personified t hose cr iteria of hav ing made a “sig nif ica nt contr ibut ion in support of the Chamber’s mission,” more fully than Closson. He helped A ndroscoggin Bank become a major engine of growth in our community, has been a stalwart supporter of the arts, education, and especially the Chamber and its efforts to help the region become an even better place to live and work. Closson served seven years on the Chamber board, including a term as chair, was an integral part of the building campaign, and continues to be an active recruiter.

The Business Leadership Award for a larger company will be presented to Agren Appliance. In 1969, the Agren family business included a phone and two repair trucks. Rou-

tine weekday calls for appliance repair, emergency responses on weekends and over critical holi-day periods helped build Agren’s reputation for reliability with many Maine families.

The company has grown to include stores i n f ive tow ns a nd has added full lines of furniture and televisions to their basic appliance inventory. The company’s success rema i ns rooted i n exempla r y service, and each store has become a vital corporate citizen in each tow n – none moreso than the f lagship on Minot Avenue at the southern gateway of Auburn, where the company remains an inspiring example of the best of how family-owned businesses reinforce the fabric of their communities.

Ba xter Brew ing Co., recent ly recognized by the beverage in-dustry as “the 2011 best new brew-ery in the U.S.” is the recipient of the Business Leadership Award for a smaller company.

The only brewery in New England to package all its beers in either kegs or aluminum cans, the start-up was compelled to double its production in its first quarter of op-eration. The tasting room, open for tours Thursdays through Sundays, has attracted visitors from 46 states and 25 foreign countries. Baxter beer is distributed to more than 1,000 retailers, bars and restau-rants throughout Maine, and the Boston/North Shore areas of Mas-sachusetts, with expansion to the rest of Massachusetts starting now.

Two Community Service Lead-ership Awards will be presented this year. The L/A CA$H Coalition is a group of community partners who annually promote the Earned Income Tax Credit, a federal credit f or low-t o -mo de r a t e -i nc ome workers. The EITC is touted as the federal government’s largest anti-poverty initiative.

T he C oa l it ion prov ide s f re e preparation and e-filing of federal and state returns by IRS-certified volunteers, and provides free tax preparation at the Lewiston Multi-Purpose Center and Auburn City Hall. Since 2004, the Coalition has facilitated the return of over $13 million in tax refunds to the pocket s of low-to-moder ate-i nc ome w or k e r s w it h i n t he Lewiston-Auburn area, a boost to the local economy.

The organizers of the L/A Art Walk, led by Mike Dostie, will receive the other award in this category. Between May and September, more than 1,500 people were drawn to

tours of art exhibits throughout the downtowns of Lewiston and Aubu r n on what beca me t he unof f icia l Fr iday night out in the Twin Cities, sold more than

$6,000 of local art, and captured the attention of art organizations around the entire state of Maine.
