Ramalatha Esteemed Members, I am happy to inform that a no. of new student branches are formed in the past 6 to 7 months and the count has reached 152. Some of the dormant branches were also invigorated and all most all the branch counselors are actively involved in carrying out various professional activities for the benefit of the student members. Our Executive committee members are also making all-out efforts to participate in the activities in the form of gracing the occasion as chief guest or as key note speaker or motivator or invited speaker for one of the sessions etc., When we see the statistics, majority of the student members are from final year or pre-final year. As one of the first –of-its kind initiatives, the executive committee of IEEE Madras Section approved the financial assistance of Rs1,50,000/- for the final year student projects @ Rs15,000/- per project (LINK Vol.7(7), July 2010). We had received 31 projects proposals for financial assistance. About 60 IEEE members helped in evaluating the projects and recommended 10 projects based on originality, industrial/social relevance, practical viability etc., The list of selected projects is made available on the web and the teams are informed individually. The 50% financial assistance will be sent by cheque drawn in the name of corresponding IEEE student branch bank account and rest of the payment will be made after receiving the completed project report. I take this opportunity to congratulate the winners and wish them all the best for successful completion of their IEEE funded project. It is the time, the final year students will be planning for their future career — whether it is higher studies (M.S, M. E/ M.Tech or M. B.A), or Core Job /IT Job Employment or Entrepreneurship. If you want to pursue MS abroad, you may have to take up TOEFL and GRE. You have to look into updated formats and procedures (www.toefl.org. www.gre.org) as they change time to time. Some of the other related works include: Reco letters: The reco letters can be prepared by giving the details of the following aspects: Academic performance, Analytical ability, Research potential, Technical strength, Personal traits (hard work, sincerity, getting along with team members, emotional stability, leadership quality), Seminar/conference/pre-conf tutorial participation/presentation, Mini projects/ major project and co- curricular & extra-curricular activities (NSS/ NSO/YRC etc). The reco letters can be obtained from HOI/HOD/Professors/Project guides/Maths-Eng professors/Faculty advisors. Dear Friends, Our Chairman, typical of his style as a teacher, in his message has provided valuable tips on how to go about applying for higher studies. Small SavingsDr. S. Thiruvengadam,

Dean & Professor (Retd.)NIT Kozhikode and SVCE, Chennai

An old adage says “Small drops maketha mighty ocean”. In tune with this, smallquantum of energy saved, will add up andcontribute to substantial savings of energy. Thisarticle aims to focus on saving of energy bytiny and small consumers. It may be surprisingto perceive that the simple acting of ‘switchingoff’ of ONE KW of power (when not needed)at the consumer end will be equivalent to savingor not generating more than 1.5 to 2 KW powerat the generation end. This is tantamount tojust removing that much of load off the system. It will become clear if the path of the currentthat contributes, to the delivery of this ONEKW of power to the consumer, is visualized. From the load end to the generating source, thereare at least four to five sections through whichthe current flows. They are HT transformers atsending end, transmission lines and then LTtransformers at the distribution end, followedby distributors. This flow of current causesveritable losses- resistive and magnetic. Theselosses may add up to about 0.6KW for deliveringa load of 1KW at consumer’s end depending onthe age and quality of equipments used.

Furthermore, by switching off this load, thesaved power /energy and corresponding fuel(when viewed from a global perspective), canbe used to generate power for power starved“someone else”. This will go a long way inarresting fast depletion of the limited rawsources of energy. This non- burnt fuel due tothis deferment of load of 1KW will also help toreduce global warming in the long run.

Hence “small savings” in energy is aconcept worth adopting. “Charity begins athome”- the proverb says. Similarly, ‘smallenergy savings’ should begin at home i.e. atdomestic or small consumer level. Some simplehouse keeping measures will help plug the leak-holes of energy. Aged equipments like motorsand pumps need replacement as the older theequipment, more will be the losses in frictionand similar ways. Electric motors should beoperated at rated voltage and as far as possibleat near full load to ensure maximum efficiency. For example, pumping of water can be deferredto the time of the day when voltage is normal.Another energy guzzler is the lighting load.Replacement of filament lamps by CFL will goa long way in saving considerable energy. TheROI in such cases is not too delayed.

Yet another sector where hidden scopefor energy saving exists is in the judicious useof electronic equipments like entertainment

gadgets and computers. One may thinkelectronic equipments consume less power(compared to motors, heaters and lightingequipments) and hence there is little scope tosave energy. This is not true. Normally usersneglect to switch off/ remove from power pointsthese electronic equipments like TV, CDplayers, Computers etc. They are left tohibernate in the so called waiting mode overeven 24 hours. All these equipments are fittedwith step-down transformers which consumepower in the form of magnetic losses. Theselosses though small in quantity will aggregateto large energy loss over hours. By the simpleact of switching off supply, this energy losscould be avoided. Even though very small, whileconsidered separately, the energy saved couldswell to large quantities because of the largenumber of TV, Video Players, Computers andsimilar equipments in wide use.

In conclusion the author wishes to exhortall the readers of this article to attemptimplementing the above suggestions at theirhouse level and thus derive the relevant benefitsand also spread this message of “SMALLSAVINGS”.
