CH302 Random Musings—A getting close to V-Day edition 1. Life presents lots of little complications. For me, one is that my daughter was born on my wife’s birthday, which might seem kind of sweet, but actually means that each year, the days leading up to February 11 will be a challenge as I try to plan the simultaneous birthday parties of two people with little in common while also trying to work for a living. For example, here is a picture of the two of them—Maddie loves clothes and is wearing the evening gloves and Easter Sunday bonnet she has been dying to own. My wife, on the other hand, views any clothing beyond jeans and a tee-shirt collection as a waste of fabric. So what does this slew of birthdays mean for you? I likely made mistakes on the practice quiz 2 answer key—you’re lucky it got done. 2. At long last the HW Service appears to be operational. The quiz 1 scores are posted. The average was an 86% which, even with two killed questions, is good work. I won’t be throwing out any additional questions since the most missed question was answered correctly by 65% of you. 3. If for any reason you are having problems with your grades—from being able to register for the HW Service to the HW Service not working to not being able to find your scores to not believing that the recorded score is accurate, please do the following: Most importantly, do not e-mail to start the process, instead: Fill out a change of grade request available at the front of the class room before and after class or on my web site Turn it in to Alexis in class or in her office hour (Friday 10:30 to 11:30.) No exceptions. Wait a couple days for Alexis to get back to you (she’ll usually do it the same day) and only then e-mail her at [email protected] to see what is up. Please follow these simple instructions. They are the only way you will get your requests for grading information and HW Service concerns. 4. I thought I would repeat number 3 for those of you who still aren’t following instructions about HW Service or grading problems. If for any reason you are having problems with your grades—from being able to register for the HW Service to the HW Service not working to not being able to find your scores to not believing that the recorded score is accurate, please do the following: Most importantly, do not e-mail to start the process, instead: Fill out a change of grade request available at the front of the class room before and after class or on my web site Turn it in to Alexis in class or in her office hour (Friday 10:30 to 11:30.) 6. The peer assistance training sessions are also now in high gear. They are as follows:

• Anna Smith’s prep hour: Thursday 2 pm Welch 3.228• David Laude’s prep hour: Friday at 1 pm W. C. Hogg 1.108• Alexis Lennart’s prep hour: Friday at 3 pm Welch 3.228• Laura Millspaugh’s prep hour: Monday at 1 pm Welch 3.228

Remember, if you are a peer assistant and cannot make the assigned time for your help session instructor, simply show up to another training session—you don’t need to ask for permission. (By the way, my apologiesfor those who went to Alexis’ Friday session last week—I did not know she was not starting these until thisweek.)

7. Worksheet 5 for the coming week is on Chapter 17 material on chemical equilibria. It will introduced to thepeer assistants at this weeks training sessions and posted this weekend for everyone else. Copies will also beavailable in the help sessions.

8. There is a practice quiz at the end of class today on the eight kinetics questions to show up on quiz 2 nextTuesday. A reminder to everyone that it is essential to efficient learning that you be able to immediatelyidentify the kind of problem you are working before you start trying to stick numbers into equations. Thequestions for this coming quiz 2, as reported last week, are:

• order of rxn from method of initial rates• order of rxn from units of rate constant• assigning reaction rate from chemical reaction• integrated rate law calculation• combined Arrhenius equation calculation• reaction mechanism assignment• activation energy calculation from potential energy• kinetics theory general question

Part 1. Famous people Love Poetry.

Oranges By Gary Soto

The first time I walkedWith a girl, I was twelve,Cold, and weighted downWith two oranges in my jacket.December. Frost crackingBeneath my steps, my breathBefore me, then gone,As I walked towardHer house, the one whosePorch light burned yellowNight and day, in any weather.A dog barked at me, untilShe came out pullingAt her gloves, face brightWith rouge. I smiled,Touched her shoulder, and ledHer down the street, acrossA used car lot and a lineOf newly planted trees,Until we were breathingBefore a drugstore. WeEntered, the tiny bellBringing a salesladyDown a narrow aisle of goods.I turned to the candiesTiered like bleachers,And asked what she wanted -Light in her eyes, a smileStarting at the cornersOf her mouth. I fingeredAn ickel in my pocket,And when she lifted a chocolateThat cost a dime,I didn’t say anything.I took the nickel fromMy pocket, then an orange,And set them quietly onThe counter. When I looked up,The lady’s eyes met mine,And held them, knowingVery well what it was allAbout.

Outside,A few cars hissing past,Fog hanging like old

Coats between the trees.I took my girl’s handIn mine for two blocks,Then released it to letHer unwrap the chocolate.I peeled my orangeThat was so bright againstThe gray of DecemberThat, from some distance,Someone might have thoughtI was making a fire in my hands.

Sonnet #18 William Shakespeare

Shall I compare thee to a Summer's day?Thou art more lovely and more temperate:Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,And Summer's lease hath all too short a date:Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,And oft' is his gold complexion dimm'd;And every fair from fair sometime declines,By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd:But thy eternal Summer shall not fadeNor lose possession of that fair thou owest;Nor shall Death brag thou wanderest in his shade,When in eternal lines to time thou growest:

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

How Do I Love Thee?Elizabeth Barrett BrowningHow do I love thee? Let me count the ways.I love thee to the depth and breadth and heightMy soul can reach, when feeling out of sightFor the ends of being and ideal grace.I love thee to the level of every day'sMost quiet need, by sun and candle-light.I love thee freely, as men strive for right.I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.I love thee with the passion put to useIn my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.I love thee with a love I seemed to loseWith my lost saints. I love with the breath,Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,I shall but love thee better after death.

Love Not Me by John WilbyeLove not me for comely grace,For my pleasing eye or face,Nor for any outward part:No, nor for a constant heart! For these may fail or turn to ill:Should thou and I sever.Keep, therefore, a true woman's eye,And love me still, but know not why!So hast thou the same reason stillTo dote upon me ever.

My Love Is Like To Ice by Edmund SpenserMy love is like to ice, and I to fire:How come it then that this her cold is so greatIs not dissolved through my so hot desire,But harder grows the more I her entreat?Or how comes it that my exceeding heatIs not allayed by her heart-frozen cold,But that I burn much more in boiling sweat,And feel my flames augmented manifold? What more miraculous thing may be told,That fire, which is congealed with senseless cold,Should kindle fire by wonderful device?Such is the power of love in gentle mind,That it can alter all the course of kind.

Love by Samuel Taylor ColeridgeAnd in Life's noisiest hour,There whispers still the ceaseless Love of Thee,The heart's Self-solace and soliloquy. You mould my Hopes, you fashion me within; And to the leading Love-throb in the HeartThro' all my Being, thro' my pulse's beat; You lie in all my many Thoughts, like Light,Like the fair light of Dawn, or summer EveOn rippling Stream, or cloud-reflecting Lake. And looking to the Heaven, that bends above you,How oft! I bless the Lot that made me love you.

Longing by Matthew ArnoldCome to me in my dreams, and thenBy day I shall be well again!For then the night will more than payThe hopeless longing of the day.Come, as thou cam'st a thousand times,A messenger from radiant climes,And smile on thy new world, and beAs kind to others as to me!Or, as thou never cam'st in sooth,Come now, and let me dream it truth;

And part my hair, and kiss my brow,And say: My love! why sufferest thou?Come to me in my dreams, and thenBy day I shall be well again! For then the night will more than payThe hopeless longing of the day.

She Walks In Beauty Lord ByronShe walks in beauty, like the nightOf cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that's best of dark and brightMeet in her aspect and her eyes:Thus mellow'd to that tender lightWhich heaven to gaudy day denies. One shade the more, one ray the less,Had half impair'd the nameless graceWhich waves in raven tress,Or softly lightens o'er her face;Where thoughts serenely sweet expressHow pure, how dear their dwelling place. And on that cheeck, and o'er that brow,So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,The smiles that win, the tint that glow,A mind at peace with all below,A heart whose love is innocent!

A Red,Red Rose Robert BurnsO my luve's like a red, red rose,That's newly sprung in June;O my luve's like the melodieThat's sweetly play'd in tuneAs fair art thou, my bonie lass,So deep in luve am I;And I will luve thee still, my Dear,Till a' the seas gang dry.Till a' the seas gang dry, my Dear,And the rocks melt wi' the sun;I will luve thee still my Dear,While the sands o' life shall run.And fare thee weel, my only Luve,And fare the weel, a while! And I will come again, my Luve,

A Friend Like Youby Author Unknown

There's lots of thingsWith which I'm blessed,Tho' my life's been both Sunny and Blue,But of all my blessings,This one's the best:To have a friend like you.

In times of troubleFriends will say,"Just asK, I'll help you through it."But you don't wait for me to ask,You just get upAnd do it!

And I can thinkOf nothing in lifeThat I could more wisely do,Than know a friend,And be a friend,And love a friend... like you.

Counting the Beatsby Robert Graves:

You, love, and I,(He whispers) you and I,And if no more than only you and IWhat care you or I?

Counting the beats,Counting the slow heart beats,The bleeding to death of time in slow heart beats,Wakeful they lie.

Cloudless day,Night, and a cloudless day,Yet the huge storm will burst upon their heads onedayFrom a bitter sky.

Where shall we be,(She whispers) where shall we be,When death strikes home, O where then shall we beWho were you and I?

Not there but here,(He whispers) only here,As we are, here, together, now and here,Always you and I.

Counting the beats,Counting the slow heart beats,The bleeding to death of time in slow heart beats,Wakeful they lie.

Trague:By Viggo Mortensen

I swallowed the reelAnd the rodAnd the faith thatSo sweetly I hadThe afternoon of the dayThat I met youI saw myself in your eyesAnd in your armsAnd an entire lifetimeIn your lips I livedThe afternoon of the dayThat I met you.

Stanza for Music:by Lord Byron

They say that Hope is happiness; But genuine Love must prize the past,And Memory wakes the thoughts that bless; They rose the first- they set the last;

And all that Memory loves the most Was once our only Hope to be,And all that Hope adored and lost Hath melted into Memory.

Alas! it is delusion all: The future cheats us from afar,Nor can we be what we recall, Nor dare we think on what we are.

Come Slowlyby Emily Dickinson

Come slowly, EdenLips unused to thee.Bashful, sip thy jasmines,As the fainting bee,Reaching late his flower,Round her chamber hums,Counts his nectars -alights,And is lost in balms!

Part 2. Student poetry:

To the one and only Meera V.Your secret Admirer <3

Meera Meera on the wall,You’re the loveliest of them all.

You are my sunshine on a cloudy day,Much more beautiful than the Chesapeake Bay.

I love you even though you don’t love me back,I wish I could take you home in my backpack.

Sometimes you call me a dork,It’s like you stabbed my heart with a fork.

One day I will win your love,But until then I will admire you like a beautifulwhite dove.

Dive--- Rana (Amy) Razzaque

You are a majestic lakeglistening in the sun, refreshing and pureand cool to the touch.Your lips are wavesthat transfix my gazeand all my helpless heart can dois dream of kissing you...I want to dive inside of youand swim down to your core.I want your presence to surround mecompletely...so I can become a part of youeternally...

I want to breathe you into meand never exhaleso I can keep a part of youforever with me.And I will die breathless, but happybecause my bones will have been taintedwith your heavenly touch.

I look into your eyesand I can’t tear my own away.you’ve hypnotized mewith just one smileand that twinkle in your eye. You’ve captured and tamedmy ferocious heart. And now I’m fallinginto you.I’m falling fast and deepbut far from hard.I’m falling and I’m screamingwith pure delightbecause all I want to dois dive.

Jessica Gillen: Atomic Love

I Thank God He Sent You to Me by: Celina (lovepoetry.com)

I thank God he sent you to me, For you and I were meant to be.We have a bond too strong to break, We have a love no one can take.

In you, I have found a love so true, My heart is filled with love for you.Every time I see you, my heart skips a beat, You make my life whole, you make my lifecomplete.

My love for you grows more with each passing day, The thought of your gorgeous face takes my breathaway:Those brown eyes fill my soul with happiness, Those luscious lips I love to kiss.

The day when I become your wife, Will be the happiest day of my life.Even thinking of that day makes me smile, I can't wait 'till I walk down that aisle.

I dream of that day when we'll both say, "I do" For always and forever... I will love you.

Keeper Of My DreamsWritten by Denise Mangano

When you're not here to share my days and nightsMy life is so incompleteFor you are my heart, my soulThe ‘oneness’ I had known to seek

Without you I merely exist from day to dayWith you I know that I will findAll that I have been searching forMy completeness, my eternal peace of mind

You are the keeper of my dreamsThe man who holds my heart in his handsThe one I want to spend my life withThe one with whom I will always stand

Stand beside through thick and thinThrough all that life will throw our wayKnowing that this special love we shareWill guide us, each and every day

This journey was started long agoBefore this time and placeThe journey of completenessAs two hearts and souls embraceForever is what I want with youFor the search is at an endOur hearts have found each otherAs lovers, as soul-mates, as friends.

The Arrow And The Song

By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I shot an arrow into the air,It fell to earth, I knew not where:For so swiftly it flew, the sightCould not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,It fell to earth I knew not where; For who has sight so keen and strong,That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak,I found the arrow still unbroke; And the song, from beginning to end,I found again in the heart of a friend.

This is for Carrie Wells, from Drew "Pi isExactly Three" Oldag

Shakespear's Sonnet 130

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;Coral is far more red, than her lips red:If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.I have seen roses damasked, red and white,But no such roses see I in her cheeks; And in some perfumes is there more delightThan in the breath that from my mistress reeks.I love to hear her speak, yet well I knowThat music hath a far more pleasing sound:I grant I never saw a goddess go,My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:And yet by heaven, I think my love as rare,As any she belied with false compare.

And

"The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" Marlowe

Come live with me and be my love,And we will all the pleasures proveThat valleys, groves, hills, and fields,Woods, or steepy mountain yields. And we will sit upon rocks,Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks,By shallow rivers to whose fallsMelodious birds sing madrigals.

And I will make thee beds of rosesAnd a thousand fragrant poises,A cap of flowers, and a kirtleEmbroidered all with leaves of myrtle;

A gown made of the finest woolWhich from our pretty lambs we pull;Fair lined slippers for the cold,With buckles of the purest gold;

A belt of straw and ivy buds,With coral clasps and amber studs; And if these pleasures may thee move,Come live with me, and be my love.

The shepherds's swains shall dance and singFor thy delight each May morning:If these delights thy mind may move,Then live with me and be my love.

For my dear friends: gloria, sarah and steveplease!

Valentineby Carol Ann Duffy

Not a red rose or a satin heart.

I give you an onion. It is a moon wrapped in brown paper. It promises lightlike the careful undressing of love.

Here.It will blind you with tearslike a lover. It will make your reflectiona wobbling photo of grief.

I am trying to be truthful.

Not a cute card or kissogram.

I give you an onion. Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips, possessive and faithfulas we are,for as long as we are.

Take it.Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding ring,if you like.Lethal.Its scent will cling to your fingers, cling to your knife.-------
