Sustainable Development
(SD) Sustainable Development clearly
forms the statements of our Our
Common Future or the Brundtland
Report. It has two important
aspects: meets the needs of the
present and securing the needs of
the future. It does not imply limits
and development, but rather
responsible and conscientious
development.
Essentially, Sustainable Development means finding ways
to improve people’s quality of life without damaging the
environment, and without storing up problems for the
future, or transferring them to other parts of society or
other countries. It is an innovation agenda, inviting us
rethink how we organise our lives and work so that we don’t
destroy our most precious resources.
The Five Capitals Model for Sustainable
Development
The Five Capitals Model was
developed by the organisation of
Forum for Common Future. It
provides a basis for understanding
sustainability in terms of the
economic concept of wealth
creation or ‘capital’.
The Earth Charter “We urgently need a shared vision of basic values to provide
an ethical foundation for the emerging world community.
Therefore, together in hope we affirm the following
interdependent principles for a sustainable way of life as a
common standard by which the conduct of all individuals,
organizations, businesses, governments, and trans-national
institutions is to be guided and assessed.”
