PROVEN PERFORMANCE FOR OVER 50 YEARS

COX HIGH-ACCURACY PRECISION AND INDUSTRIAL FLOWMETERS

COX Flow Measurement has been the icon

of turbine owmeters since its inception. The installation base is a testimony tocustomers who have discovered the

performance and longevity of COX turbinemeters and associated electronics.

    DESCRIPTION

COXs superior performance is creditedto the axial helical rotor design, whichenhances linearity, repeatability and

speed-of-response and reduces pressuredrop. A single-bearing design minimizes

friction and delivers linearity beyond that

of the standard 10:1 range. This bearingsystem also extends the repeatable rangeto 60:1 on small meters and up to 150:1on large meters.

In addition, COX Flow Measurement offers

the EC80 ow computer, which willlinearize the meter within 0.1% linearityover the entire repeatable range. This ow

computer offers temperature and pressurecompensation with multiple outputs for

frequency and analog in engineering units.

COX precision owmeters utilize animproved, extended 6-vane support toreduce uid swirl from entering the rotor.

Ceramic ball bearings are standard forimproved durability. The 316 SS housing

exceeds the pressure ratings of the AN

(MS) ttings. Hex or square housings makeit easy for tightening the threaded ttingsduring installation and removal.

Lightweight helical rotors provide 3 mS, or less, speed-of-response and extended linear ranges. The helical bladeprole transfers energy more efciently, reducing bearing wear, pressure drop and their associated cost.

Industrial applications will benet from using ceramic ow-through ball bearings. This ceramic bearing system is

extremely versatile and the recommended bearing for most applications, including cryogenics. This superior low-friction bearing outperforms journal bearings and extends the usable range of the turbine owmeter.Whatever the uid media, COX Flow Measurement has a proven solution.

Bearings are the key factor in performance whenmeasuring low ow. That is why COX Flow

Measurement uses ceramic ball bearings, which

are near perfect in roundness within 10 millionths

of an inch variation. This means lower friction and

less vibration, which equals superior repeatability.

The COX LoFlo Series is a robust axial turbine owmeter with

exceptional repeatability of 0.25% of reading. When paired with theEC80 Flow Computer, the calibration data is linearized to within 0.1%of reading, allowing for precision ow measurement over the entire

usable range of the meter. COX LoFlo Series owmeters are notposition-sensitive and can be mounted in any piping orientation.

The custom long-life, ceramic low-friction ball bearing system used inthe COX LoFlo Series meets the demands of water, hydrocarbons and

cryogenic uids. Capable of measuring ows as low as 0.006 GPM(0.024 LPM), this meter is an ideal solution for a multitude of

applications. Typical uses include fuel injection productionsystems, blending of costly chemical additives, onboard fuel

consumption, refrigerants, dye injections, and more.

Ceramic ball bearings have much less ction than journal

bearings and provide a wider measureable ow range with superiorrepeatability. The COX LoFlo Series is designed to be rugged and

repeatable with the assurance of the most accurate calibrationprovided on our positive displacement primary standard calibrators.

testing. Its use around the world for primary

standard calibrator correlation tests is proof of

    performance.

COX Flow Measurement offers proven owmetering solutions for the most demanding

aerospace, automotive, industrial and OEMapplications. The Exact Series Dual RotorTurbine Flowmeter is the worlds most precise

meter of its kind, providing extended rangeperformance not obtainable with traditional

    single rotor designs.

    DESCRIPTION

The Exact Series Dual Rotor Turbine Flowmeterprovides an extended ow range capability,

which often eliminates the need for manifoldsystems and thus simplies installation and

lowers costs. The meters exceptionalperformance, enabled by the innovative dual

rotor conguration, enhances UVC curves andextends the usable measurement ow range.

With the Exact Series Dual Rotor TurbineFlowmeter (Standard Model CDX/CDL), ow

straighteners are not required to controlprocess uid swirl, as the dual rotor systemcancels out the rotor acceleration effect. With

ow straighteners, bearing diagnostics can bedetermined by monitoring the ratio of the rotors

to detect wear or cleanliness. The Exact Seriesmeters also utilize a unique pickoff system,

which is impervious to vibration and minimizes

space. This allows for direct coupling ofelectronics on a robust mount having a lower

prole. Both integral and remote electronicsare available to process the signal output.

Exact Series Dual Rotor technology is ideal for

a wide range of applications. The meter isdesigned for bi-directional ow and high-shockenvironments. It utilizes a robust bearing

system having dual ceramic bearings on eachrotor with the internals securely locked in place,

resulting in excellent repeatability. The dualrotor meter allows for installation in applications

that do not have space for ow straightenerswithout loss of measurement accuracy.Pressures of up to 30,000 psig can be

contained, while compensating for viscositychanges using integrated pressure sensors.

Bearings are the most critical component of a turbine owmeter in terms of both repeatability of the meter

output and the security of the calibration over time. This is why all COX Flow Measurement turbine meters useceramic ball bearings. There are several advantages in using ceramic material:

Ceramic can be used in non-lubricating uids Ceramic is non-corrosive and heat-tolerant, making it ideal for water or hydrocarbons

Ceramic offers near perfect roundness, minimizing vibration Ceramic is harder and measures RC 75-80 as compared to SST at RC58-65

Ceramic is 50% lighter than SST, extending the life of the bearing

All the above attributes reduce heat, providing ve times more wear resistance. Ultimately, this preserves the

calibration of the meter, while being more tolerant to particulates.

    1. Unconditioned ow enters owmeter.

    2. Straightening vanes smooth the ow as itenters the rst rotor.

    3. Flow transfers momentum to the rst rotor, making it spin counterclockwise. Flow then

exits rotor, with a clockwise spin.

    4. Flow enters second rotor with a nearlyperpendicular angle of attack, thereby

transferring additional momentum to thesecond rotor. This additional momentum

    results in greatly extended turndown.

Calibrations are performed at COX Flow Measurement, a NVLAP (Lab Code 200668) accredited facilityusing Primary Standard Calibrators producing 0.05% of reading uncertainty.

Customers can select from a variety of calibrations to enhance the accuracyof the ow measurement reading. Often, manufacturers perform water

calibrations and then use a correction factor. This can be misleading, as thecalibration curve will vary in more viscous uids. COX Flow Measurement

avoids calibration shifts by using the actual uid viscosity in the calibrator todevelop the calibration curves. Multiple calibrations can be provided to form

a single Universal Viscosity Curve, which adjusts the frequency/viscosityrelationship to match the actual temperature of the known uid.

affecting performance. To reduce ow turbulence, COX recommendsusing ow straighteners, which have 10 diameters in length

upstream and 5 diameters in length downstream, with vanes.

Where impractical due to space limitations, careful attention to

the location of valves, bends, etc., is suggested. A 10-micron

lter on the small meters is recommended to prevent bearing

    contamination.

Electrical installation requires a 3-conductor shielded cable tothe readout device.

The PDCL Series Primary Standard Calibrators are used daily in our prestigious NVLAP calibration lab. As a user, we continually

implement time-saving features such as uid lling, mixing and viscosity temperature control, while improving on operator

    efciency and ensuring minimal maintenance.

    PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATIONS

Flow Dynamics, part of the COX Flow Measurement family,is known for the industrys most advanced primary standard

positive displacement ow calibrators. These liquid owcalibrators are the equipment-of-choice across a wide range

of industries, and are in use throughout the world in the mostprestigious government primary standard laboratories.

The Flow Dynamics Positive Displacement Calibrator, Liquid(PDCL) 10, 60 and 400 Series calibrators perform NIST traceable

calibrations ranging from 0.01 GPM (0.04 LPM) to 400 GPM(1514 LPM) with an uncertainty of 0.05% and a repeatability of

0.01% of reading. They are compatible with most common

owmeters providing a visual, pulse, or analog output.

The PDCL Series is a precision volumetric device displacing anexact known volume of uid passing through the owmeter

under test, while compensating for temperature effects onviscosity. The PDCLs low uid usage supports the need to

reduce hazardous uids, while keeping uid costs to aminimum. Blending uids is made easy with an automaticcycling feature for mixing uid while in the machine. In addition,

the calibrators piping loop is designed to assist draining uidsout of the system and facilitate ushing to clean residual uid

    out of the piping.

Flo-Cal User Interface: The PDCL Series employs Flo-Calsoftware, which is seamlessly compatible with Windows

operating systems, to graph and produce calibration datareports. The software graphics display visual aids calibration

data/plots, and the data reports are user-congurable.Calibration les are automatically stored for owmeterperformance history and can be recalled for plot comparison

    to the current calibration.

Field Service: In addition to manufacturing new primarystandard calibration systems, COX Flow Measurement offers

eld certication and service worldwide. All calibrators are

100% documented to ensure service support for the life ofthe calibrator.
