    As the MongolianParliament discussedamendments to itsenvironmental legislation, a protest ormed outside theGovernment Palace in downtown Ulaanbaatar.     Kazakhstan condemnedthe use o chemicalweaponry in Syria, and

    Emomali Rahmon signed an agreement to allow or theconstruction o a natural gas pipeline through ajikistanto China. ajikistan will act as a transit state or theCentral Asia-China pipeline, which will transport gasrom urkmenistan to China and attract up to $3 millionworth o Chinese direct investment in ajikistan.

    Uzbekistan will allowan International LaborOrganization mission to

    monitor this years cotton harvest, which began thisweek. Uzbekistan, the worlds second-largest exportero cotton and the th-largest producer, relies on asystem o compulsory labor or its harvests. Humanrights activists have voiced concerns that monitorsactivities may be restricted by ofcials.

    Te Finance Ministry isreporting that Slovakiaseconomy will grow asterthan projected this year, in part because o improvementsin the euro region and increased domestic householdspending. Te 2013 growth orecast is now at 0.8 percent.Tis growth will help Slovakia meet its target o reducingscal shortall below the EU limit o 3 percent o GDP,bringing Slovakia in line with international standards.

    Te Hungarian governmentapproved an amendment tothe constitution in responseto international criticism that the government has becomemore anti-democratic.     As Latvia nears accessionto the Eurozone in 2014,a poll has revealed that

    Latvians are predominantly against adopting theEuro as its currency. Despite a government-led pro-Euro campaign, 53% o Latvians oppose joining theEurozone, while only 22% avor it, according to thepoll.

    Poland has decided to keepplans or an IPO o the railcargo arm o the national

    rail Polskie Koleje Panstwowe SA, as well as Energa SA,the ourth largest national utility. Te IPO prospectuswill likely be approved by October 15, meaning that thecompanies could be listed on the stock exchange by theend o the year.     Slovenia has begunconstructing its rst mosquethis week. Although theinitial request or the mosques construction was issued in1969, it was not built until now due to popular resistanceand issues involving land availability. Slovenia is home toapproximately 47,000 Muslims.

First Deputy Prime MinisterAleksandar Vucic has deended the choice, saying thatStrauss-Kahns checkered personal past has no bearingon his proessional knowledge and expertise.

    Seventeen people werearrested in Macedoniathis week or selling state

    intelligence to oreign governments and or threatening toblackmail individuals by releasing classied inormation.Among those arrested are acting and ormer intelligenceemployees, a parliamentary ofcer, police and deenseofcials, and a journalist. Te Macedonian police havebeen investigating the case or two years and are still onthe hunt or three more suspects.
