An innovative, international outlookThe economy is characterized by its strong propensity for innovation and internationalisation. Not only because of its geographical position, but for a number of historical and cultural factors and the long tradition of its manufacturing industry, Piemonte has been able to establish and maintain close commercial and trade links with neighbouring countries and with others further away. Its international reach does not only concern exports, however, but also services, capital, people and knowledge. As confirmation of the region’s inter-national competitiveness, over 600 foreign companies have chosen to invest in Piemonte, which ranks second in Italy in terms of direct investments by foreign companies.

Leader in innovationPiemonte has been a hub for major technical innovations from the electric engine in the19th century, to the MP3 file format, and the common rail for diesel engines. In recent decades, Piemonte, traditionally the Italian centre of the automotive industry, has diversified its own economic structure, directing itself more and more toward sectors tied to the economy of know-ledge. It focuses on R&D activities and invests in strategic sectors such as, intelligent and sustainable mobility, ICT, life sciences, renewable energy, logistics etc. Piemonte is the Italian region with the highest share of private R&D expenditure, and also leads in terms of patents registered at the European Patent Office.

The innovation hubsOver 700 companies, universities, science and technology parks and the main research centres are involved in the innovation hubs, made up of groups of companies and research bodies that operate in a specific tech-nological sector, co-ordinated by a ma-nagement body. Their creation aims to stimulate the development of business research and innovation activities, en-hancing the potential already present, fostering internationalisation processes and increasing the attractiveness of business investments in Piemonte.
