Here we are again, in the middle of our high season. Everyone seems to have returned from up north to recapture their part of ‘paradise’! Philanthropic opportunities, festivals, shows, fundraisers, beaches, golf courses and tennis courts…what more could we want? Don’t forget the winter sports in our area. The Everblades and FGCU Men’s and Women’s basketball are in the heart of their seasons. Even the Spring Training seasons for the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox are starting this month, about 10 days earlier than usual.

The needs within our community continue to be as numerous as ever and so are the opportunities to give back to those who are less fortunate. In this issue, read about how Interfaith Charities of SW Florida (formerly Interfaith Caregivers) will celebrate 20 years of helping the needy of South Lee County with their Annual Dinner and Dessert Auction. The second annual Home Design Show brings top interior decor experts to the Miromar Design Center for three full days of seminars and tips to make your home beautiful. This year’s keynote speaker is Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill, a noted authority on period homes and historic styles, author of 11 books and owner of two interior design fi rms. Lady Henrietta recently launched a furniture line inspired by 18th century European designs infused with contemporary appeal for Maitland Smith (available at Henredon Interior Design Showroom in the Miromar Design Center).

While the Home Design Show is free, tickets for the keynote event are $15 and benefi t the Youth Music Education Program at the Naples Philharmonic. The Southwest Florida Wine and Food Fest is a weekend of fi ne wine and great food shared among friends, benefi tting The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida and providing scholarships for students pursuing pediatric medical careers at Florida Gulf Coast University and Edison State College. The gala is considered by many to be Lee County’s premier fundraising event.

Chef-Vintner Dinners are hosted in some of the area’s most exclusive homes. The intimate setting offers a unique dining experience, pairing top chefs with world-renowned vintners. Last year’s painting created by 7-year-old oncology patient Olivia Ramsey generated $125,000 in donations. In total, the 2012 Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest netted a record-breaking $2 million for children’s health charities.

Being a personal fi tness trainer for 15 years has taught me one thing about people: They really don’t want to work out. So whenever someone wants to exercise, regardless of he time of day, I encourage it. But in my experience, there are better times of the day to lace up those cross-trainers than others.

I fi rmly believe that that body is trainable and will adapt if you give six weeks in a new regime. The same also applies for the way that we eat.

If you intend to completely change the way you look and feel, it comes at the price of a commitment! That may mean getting up an hour earlier each morning or sacrifi cing something else that you would have rather done for working out. It means ordering the fruit for dessert over the chocolate decadence. Remember nothing tastes as good as being in shape feels!

MORNINGLet’s assume the morning workout is a possibility for

you. I’ve had many clients who trained before sunrise…just saying. The fi rst feeling we want to start our day? Gpod energy and circulation. How many times have you woken up feeling like you were in a car accident? That lack of circulation causes infl ammation. The cure is increasing blood fl ow through exercise. So now we have worked out,

we feel better physically and mentally – and next we are hungry from the workout.

What does hunger mean? It means our metabolism is jump-started and the fat-burning is underway. We have a clear head and we feel great about ourselves. Time to eat. We’re more likely to make a good choice because we feel good and don’t want to ruin that feeling. Then one good choice turns into another – and then we end up having a good day.

NIGHTSNighttime is crucial to keeping the eating habits under

control. A lot of us are night owls and go to bed too late after sitting around the house picking on the wrong food for a variety of reasons. Well, because we got up an hour earlier and exercised, we’re now going to crash earlier and avoid that extra hour of possible nighttime emotional eating.

Working out at night isn’t bad but just keep in mind that we usually get really hungry after workouts and now you are getting into those later hours where we want to cut down on our calories. Also, a good workout will sometimes give you a blast of energy that could keep you up later than you want. I have been known to clean my whole house after a good workout.

Joe and Joni Pavich will be celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. They raised two boys while building a successful real estate business in Estero. Both sons, Joe, Jr., and Jason, are now Realtors in the family business. Joe Sr. and Joni consider their sons’ wives as their “daughters-in-love” and have been blessed with fi ve grandchildren. “Our lives revolve around our family,” Joni says. “They are our greatest gifts of all!”

HOW THEY METTwo Chicago girlfriends from high school reunite: one has a daughter, one has a son...Joni: Our moms were friends during their high school years. We went to a wedding

with our parents and met there. Joe: Joni chased me all night long! ...OK, Joni’s version is the “truth.” I was only

13 years old, and boys had cooties!Joni: The cooties very quickly disappeared when we started dating two years later.

FAST DATESJoni: Joe’s need for speed started at a young age. Our fi rst date – January 11,

1969 – involved us in a drag race. I wasn’t even allowed in a car with a boy! The more he tried to impress me, the more scared I became. Two weeks later, we were going steady and still are!

We were married on June 9, 1973. Over 500 guests attended, and our traditional Croatian/Italian wedding lasted for two days. We proceeded on our honeymoon to San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. We were too young to gamble, so we walked around the casinos. But, in the end, we were lucky in love!

Sean James is a retired executive and an Estero Fire Commissioner. He and his wife, Catherine, made multiple moves while raising two boys, before retiring to Florida in 2003. One of their sons recently told them he knew no other couple married as long as his parents who were still as much in love as they are. This they consider the ultimate compliment.

HOW THEY METSean: We were both born in Ireland and emigrated to New York City within six

months of each other. We met at a dance. Our lives were very hectic. I was attending college full time and working a full-time plus a part-time job. Catherine was also attending school and working. Our dates usually started with attendance at a 2:30 a.m. Mass after I fi nished my part -time job. Mass was followed by breakfast at an all-night restaurant, and this was often followed by long talks, often sitting on the curb until sunrise, discussing life, family, values and faith.

DATE NIGHTCatherine: Early in our marriage, I established Friday night as “Date Night.” This

might include eating out, a movie or a show, but more frequently, it simply involved setting up the end of the dining room table, lighting the candles, having a simple dinner and spending three or four hours just being together.

Sean: We really enjoy doing things together, whether it be projects around the home, playing tennis or golf, or traveling. We particularly like road trips together, since there are no interruptions on our time. We also work together on a number of church outreach ministries.

WHY THE MARRIAGE HAS LASTEDBoth: We operated as partners in trying to establish some level of harmony between

family life and the ever increasing demands of corporate life. We fi rmly believe our faith and shared values have sustained us through diffi cult times.

Wilson Bradshaw is President of Florida Gulf Coast University, while Jo Anna is

Chairperson of the Harry Chapin Food Bank Board of Directors. They raised three

sons and have one grandson, plus four cats (three of which are female, to make up for

all the boys in the family). They celebrated two decades of marriage on Sept. 9, 2012.

HOW THEY METJo Anna: We met on the Tri-Rail train on the east coast of Florida in 1990. Brad rode

it from Miami to Boca Raton, and I took it from Pompano Beach to Boca Raton. He was

a dean at FAU, and I was a VP at a local bank. We actually didn’t date but only saw

each other on the train fi ve days a week – for two years. Brad moved to Georgia to

become vice president for research and dean of graduate studies at Georgia Southern

University. He came back for the inauguration of the new president at FAU, and we went

to dinner that night. Other friends from “the train” were supposed to join us but didn’t.

Brad: In retrospect, obvious set-up.

Jo Anna: I guess that was the fi rst date, though not planned.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINEJo Anna: Brad thinks he’s witty, but I think he’s corny.

Brad: I know I love to laugh and make others laugh as well.

Jo Anna: He has a great sense of humor and is quick with the one-liners. The most

humorous moments are when he tells a joke and can’t stop laughing at it while he’s

telling it. The joke isn’t as funny as his laugh, and you can’t help but be drawn into

laughter as well.

WHY OUR MARRIAGE WORKSJo Anna: Brad is a very kind and giving person, and he supports me in my role as

a community volunteer in helping those experiencing food insecurity. I can’t imagine

our marriage would work if he didn’t have a good sense of humor and a whole lot of

patience.

Brad: Jo Anna is a driven, independent, passionate and giving person. Over the

years, we have come to know each other, and we continue that process. I am looking

so much forward to the rest of lives together. Love conquers all.

Don Newberry was born and raised in Estero and met his future wife when he was

just 9 years old. They raised fi ve children together and now have 11 grandchildren and

fi ve great grandchildren, with another on the way.wils

HOW THEY METDon: The fi rst time I met her, she was 16 and married. My brother and her fi rst

husband were friends. My brother went to work on their car, and I went with him. She comes bouncing out of the house wearing a red sweater and green slacks, with long, blonde hair all the way down her back. At 9 years old, I had never thought of a girl being beautiful before. But ever since then, when I thought in my mind what an angel would look like, she would always come to mind.

MAKING A FAMILYOver the next decade, Sis had four children and Don got married, having one son.

They both divorced, reconnecting when Don’s brother asked him to help Sis move back to Estero. After that, Don frequently would see Sis when he picked up his son after work from his sister-in-law, who was friends with Sis. One day, Don and Sis started talking about movies and decided to see “Jaws” together.

Shortly thereafter, Sis was out teaching her daughter to drive, when they spotted Don working in his yard on See See Street. It was his birthday, and Sis’ daughter asked if she could bring a cake over later that evening.

Don: Best cake I ever had in my life. Her kids got along so well with mine. Our dating most of the time included the kids.

Sis: I wasn’t looking, but I’m sure glad I found him. I didn’t want to get married. He kept telling me, “I’m in love with you, and I want to make a family.”

STAYING CLOSEOn Christmas Eve 2011, Sis suffered a heart attack. A month later, she had a second

heart attack, requiring surgery and a lengthy hospital stay. Don slept beside her bed in a recliner. When a nurse asked why he didn’t use the mercy bed on the other side of the room, he replied, “It’s too far away.”

Sis: It’s a matter of just wanting to be with that person. We had to work together to survive with fi ve kids. We had nothing except each other. We’re very blessed.

Don: We have our disagreements, but when we do, we can work them out. I just feel we’re soul mates.

NBC2 Senior Meteorologist Robert Van Winkle will be the celebrity auctioneer for this year’s dessert auction at the Interfaith Charities of South Lee Annual Dinner on Saturday, March 2.

The evening also includes a silent auction and chance drawings, along with a bountiful dinner catered by chef extraordinaire Art Nicoletti.

“Chef Art Nicoletti returns again, by popular demand, to work his magic using food items donated by generous local merchants, such as Hyatt Coconut Point’s marinara sauce, shrimp donated by Blue Star Seafood and chicken donated by Costco,” says ICSL board member Bonnie Olson.

The event at Lamb of God Vineyard not only raises funds for the food pantry, it also highlights the many other services provided by ICSL. This year, the celebration also commemorates the charity’s 20th anniversary serving the poor in South Lee County.

Those involved with ICSL have always considered themselves neighbors helping neighbors. Started by the San Carlos-Estero Ministerial Association in 1992, the small food pantry has grown into a full community service organization, helping nearly 4,000 people in the last year.

“It’s been a growth process, and a successful one,” says Rev. Ray Jackson, one of the organization’s “founding fathers,” as

he recalled the small food pantry originally established at Estero United Methodist Church.

Each month, ICSL provides food to about 600 local families. Other services include food stamp registration, Meals on Wheels deliveries, volunteer income tax assistance (VITA), fi nancial crisis assistance and free summer lunches for kids. As a United Way House, ICSL invites partner agencies to use its facility to offer a variety of services, including language and literacy classes, abuse counseling and treatment and money management classes to help clients become fi scally responsible.

While the organization’s founders were people of faith, many businesses, community associations and service organizations now partner with ICSL to assist local families and individuals in need. Each week, local supermarkets and restaurants donate food, which volunteers pick up, sort and distribute.

A fl eet of about 200 volunteers logged a record 13,800 hours of service in 2011. Combined with multiple food drives throughout the year, nearly 400,000 pounds of food was donated, according to ICSL’s annual report released in November 2012.

“We really appreciate all the support we get,” says Executive Director Nancy Martin.

Van Winkle will lend his support to the annual dinner next month, replacing Len Jennings as the event emcee and dessert auctioneer. Desserts are donated by local merchants, groups and individuals. In the past, gourmet goodies have sold for hundreds of dollars, all supporting the mission of ICSL.

The annual dinner has sold out quickly in the past two years, so Olson recommends ordering tickets early. She’s also seeking corporate sponsorships and table sponsors who wish to be represented at this popular fundraising gala.

ABOUT JIM AND AMYHow long have you been in the

landscaping business?I have been in the business

for 29 years. I worked for a landscaper through middle school and high school whenever I had spare time between school, football and working at my father’s Mobil gas station. After graduating high school, I began asking all my father’s customers if they needed someone to plow their driveways in the winter. Soon I had 75 contracts. I then asked if they would be interested in me taking care of their yards. It all happened so fast, and before I knew it, I needed a secretary and a phone! I used the gas station number, had a live secretary from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. six days a week, and presto...Mobile Lawn Care was born. I sold the company after 20 years, and in 2004, my wife and I, along with our three children, decided Southwest Florida was the place for us. I haven’t looked back since. We are from Cleveland, Ohio, where the sun doesn’t shine often. Here, it’s sunny and warm almost everyday. Meeting and exceeding a client’s expectations at their winter home is awesome. The best part of our job is the relationships we build along the way.

BEST TIPS FOR IMPROVING YOUR LANDSCAPEWhat are the biggest landscaping challenges in our climate?Just knowing what to plant where. There are many variables of sun/shade and watering requirements. There is a great variety of plant and tree material here in Florida. What are your best-selling plants and trees?One large item I feel is missing from the Southwest Florida Landscape is color. Our staff does a great job with this. We sell and install many crotons, goldmounds and Red Hot Hibiscus. The most popular-selling landscape material in our nursery are bougainvilleas. No one can walk by one without wanting to buy it because of the beautiful fl owers. Palm trees are our top-selling tree.

My father was an innovative and very successful real estate developer. The Miami Herald called him “The Father of Florida Condominiums” because he built the fi rst residential condo in the United States – and the fi rst offi ce condo in the world.

As a kid, I used to walk from my elementary school to his construction projects. Sometimes my dad would walk me through the job site and show me where the elevators were going, how the stairs would be installed, and where the apartments were.

He’d also tell me about the construction business: How you made your money not when you sold your building but when you bought the property.... How the key to building a great building profi tably was compromising on everything except design and architecture.... And why he always wanted to sell his condo apartments as early as possible in the project’s lifespan.

Even as a kid, I thought I understood the reason for selling the project early was to get as much money as you could as quickly as possible. But my dad had a different rationale. Quite simply, he said he always preferred to “sell the dream.”

As my dad explained it, his best opportunity to sell an apartment for the highest price was to walk his potential buyer through a construction site and show them where they’d live, how close they’d be to shopping, the tennis courts, and the beach. Where they’d park and where their grandchildren would sleep when they stayed over.

But once the apartment was complete, the conversations would become more prosaic. One couple wanted harvest gold shag carpeting. The next buyer hated gold. One couple wanted a tile kitchen. The next wanted butcher block. Some people wanted bathtubs. Some people wanted showers because they couldn’t step over the bathtub rim.

So what’s an easier sell? Painting the picture of where they’re going to tuck in their adorable grandchildren? Or debating the value proposition of Corian or Formica countertops? When put in those simple terms, the advantages become clear.

Regardless of who the customer was and what they wanted, it was always easier to “sell the dream.” Because the reality never quite measured up to their fantasies.

Now think about your brand strategy. Are you promoting the intellectual, metrics-based advantages of your brand? Or have you fi gured out how to sell the dream?

Want some examples to fi gure out where you stand? Microsoft sells computing; Apple sells the dream. Checkers sells fast food; McDonald’s sells the dream. Sears sells inexpensive clothing and household items; Target sells the dream.

Selling the dream means you can concentrate your brand messaging on the things that get people excited. It means you can build a resilient message that will survive trends and fads. And it usually means you can charge – and get – a higher price for your products and services. Just like Apple, McDonald’s, Target… and my father.
