    President's Report

Thanks to Geoff and Judy Windsor we enjoyed a great day at Wattle Flat on Saturday 29 November. I think a few of us will be returning to Judy's nursery a bit later in the seasonl

Geoff kindly organised for us to use the Wattle Flat Public School: for our meeting which was so perfect, we'll be back! Geoff describes Wattle Flat as a former gold rush village, with the effects of the gold days still visible in the remains of diggers' holes, water races and pUddling machines and in soil erosion and regrowth bushland.

There is still bush left, mostly on areas thought too poor for farming (biddy bush country) where, interestingly, the bush is rich, with at least 1'4 species of eucalypts and 15 acacias. Eucalypts include E. cinerea and E. praecox, not common in the region.

Although Geoff and Judy have identified primarily eucalpytus and acacias, their bush is rich in other species and they are continually learning about it. Some of the locals they have come to know include Kurrajong, Myoporum, Bursaria, three Olearia, two species of Indigofera, Dipodium and Allocasuarina verticillata. There are many

more treasures and surprises lining the roads around Wattle Flat and Peel. One of the most interesting things is the difference in the bush round Wattle Flat compared to where Jocelyn Bishop lives on Rockley Mount, south of Bathurst. Of course the seasonal difference was interesting too, seeing the land in very

Mick Harvey is kindly giving up his afternoon to escort us round the native tree area. Mick as you w'ill remember propagated and planted this area virtually single-handed, and will identify EVERYTHING for usl Neil Bollinger is going to talk about propagation at the gardens, directly after our

    1998 Programme:

Your committee is busy organising a GREAT PROGRAMME, includins- a trip (finally!) to our National

I Botanic Gardens in Canberra on weekend 26/27 September.

We need your support, however, at our AGM to be held at 10 a.m. on 31 January, once again at Orange Botanic Gardens as this is the most central spot for the Central West Region.

. Other dates for your diary are 28 March at Bathurst, 30 May a walk to the Gloworm Caves and Newnes Plateau near Uthgow - hoping Blue Mountains members will join us. Then 25 July to Munghorn Reserve near Mudgee, 26/7 September Canberra, and finally our famous end of season Field Day on Saturday 28 November, location to be decided.

More information/discussin about this programme at the AGM. Please try and come along - -even if you can't make the whole day, we need your input to keep the group functioning.

  • NB: Desperation note from the tireless administrators who keep the wheels of the society turning: PLEASE use the correct membership renewal form, the one in centre of Native Plants of NSW, and send it direct to our secretary Isabel! Otherwise there's a heap of extra paperwork, costs, etc,
