THE CENTRAL SENTRY May 2017 Central United Methodist Church 17 Nanticoke Avenue, Endicott NY 13760 Rev. Dr. Michelle Bogue-Trost www.centralumcendicott.org (607) 754-6060
Pastor’s Notes As I write this, it’s in the 70s outside (close to 80 yesterday!), the daffodils and forsythia are flaming, and I’m thinking wonderful thoughts of playing in the dirt, which of course I can’t do yet, because of the late frost date in this part of the world. All this in mid-April! My Alabama heart is happy, let me tell you. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about ‘home,’ and my sense of it. I’ve been thinking about my ‘home’ in Alabama, as I start thinking about a summer trip south, my ‘home’ with my husband and our odd schedules, my ‘home’ with my friends, my ‘home’ in the ministry and in this United Methodist Church. So many homes… Long ago, moving around the country as an Air Force child, I learned that ‘home’ had nothing to do with particular houses or cities, (though I do claim a ‘hometown’ and there are some places that will never leave my heart). With my family situation being what it was when our kids were smaller, I have also learned that ‘home’ doesn’t always have to do with the same people being in the same house every day. ‘Home’ is about much more than that. ‘Home’ is about connection, about finding one’s place, about finding one’s center. Why is this occupying my thoughts these days? Easter. Easter teaches us again and again, every single year, that we have a home in God and in the community of faith, no matter what the rest of our lives look like, no matter where we live, no matter how we live. It is a glorious promise that God gives to us. We spend time each year during Lent and Holy Week reminding ourselves to put God at the center of our lives and our being—to make God our home--and then it seems we gradually leave that home behind once the lilies fade. May we who call ourselves Easter people remember this year that God is our ‘home,’ and may we live like we believe it!
Still in One Peace, Pastor Michelle

Special thanks to all those who helped with the
Mystery Easter Egg Hunt. We had a great turnout
and the children really enjoyed the story tellers and

it was important to share the story of Holy Week.

Finance Update
Faithful Christian stewardship is the backbone of strong programs and ministries at any church. We are
blessed at Central to have Christians with such strong commitments to support the programs and
ministries at Central with their time, their talents and their gifts, and we are thankful for it.
Through the first quarter of the year, Central is still in a positive financial position, but just barely. The
commitments made during the Stewardship campaign indicated that we would see an increase in giving
over last year. However at this point if the year, overall giving is down slightly. We would like to remind
everyone, that it is important for each of us to stay current with our commitments to Central.
A few weeks ago the quarterly statements were sent out. We would encourage you to review your
statement, if you haven't already, and if you've fallen behind, make every effort to catch-up. If for some
reason you cannot, please contact the Church office.
With the warm weather approaching, and spring and summer activities increasing, we would ask
everyone to continue to stay current. One easy way to do this is through electronic giving. This way,
whether you're attending the services faithfully or missing some due to travel or vacation, you can be sure
that your financial commitments to Central will be met. Contact the Church office if you are interested in
this option.
Thanks to all who give so much to the support the spirit, the life, the programs and the ministries of
Central. It is through everyone's giving that makes Central such a special place with strong service to
doing Christ's work.

SOCIAL JUSTICE
-The Past and the Future- Live More Simply
Yes, I know, April 22nd
was Earth Day and the March for Science, in Washington and around the world, is
over; and April 29th
was the powerful People’s Climate Movement ----in cities all over the country. Our
Susquehanna Chapter of Sierra Club took a full bus to Washington, D.C.
Why all the concern and action about climate justice? The April 2017 issue of National Geographic (NG)
has an article titled, “7 Things You Need to Know About Climate Change.” In brief, here they are: 1) The
world is warming 2) It’s because of us 3)We’re sure 4) Artic ice is melting fast 5) Weather is getting
intense 6) Wildlife is hurting 7) We can do something about it! (NG)
How can you help? Have you ever considered solar panels? There are five solar energy equipment systems
dealers in our local area.
“In the U.S., solar now employs more people than coal, oil, and gas combined and the switch from fossil
fuels is just beginning. Ask yourself: If climate change weren’t a serious danger, would 195 countries have
signed the Paris Agreement, trying to keep the warming below 2 degrees C. (3.6 degrees F)?” (NG)
In 2014 approximately 400,000 people marched in Manhattan right before the Climate summit of world
leaders at the United Nations, many wearing T-shirts printed with “Caretakers of God’s Creation”.
(UMW material)
United Methodist Women have a great concern for justice issues---Be Just. Be Green. United Methodist
Women encourage all units to put into action the 13 Steps to Stainability:
1) Handicapped accessibility
2) Affordability (offer carpooling)
3) Healthy food and beverages (serve fair trade coffee & tea)
4) Carbon footprint (minimize travel)
5) Just Economic Opportunities (no meetings where use of child, slave labor, or human trafficking )
6) Local solidarity (access local opportunities for being in mission at event)
7) Multigenerational Inclusion (safe child care for participants- 2 unrelated adults present at all times)
8) Paper Use (print double-sided and use paper that is made with post-consumer recycled content)
9) Racial Justice (venues that combat all forms of racism and oppression)
10) Toxin Reduction (be creative about name tags – reuse or bring your own)
11) Waste Reduction (use venues that recycle plastic, paper, glass, and metal)
12) Water Use (avoid use of individual bottled water, bring your own bottle, and promote water fountains)
13) Well-being of Participants (have quiet space for meditation and prayer or formal times on the agenda)
This summer, for Mission U, one of the studies offered is Climate Justice at Cazenovia College, Cazenovia,
NY July 14-16. For more information, see the Mission U website at unymissionu.org.
“Join me in speech and action that is clear and bold about the moral issue of climate justice.” (Rev.Peter
